Dominican in Florida faces charge of manslaughter of disabled wife

A Dominican resident in the US, Montgomery Winston, has been arrested in Florida and faces charges of the manslaughter of his disabled wife.

Winston, 68, his 39 year old daughter, Belinda and 43-year-old daughter, Hyacinth, were arrested on Wednesday. The three are being held in Hillsborough County Jail with no bond set.

According to the Tampa Tribune, all three, plus another son, 48 year old Ignatius, for whom an arrest warrant has been issued, are accused in what authorities are calling one of the worst cases of elderly neglect ever reported in the Tampa area.

Winston’s wife, Mary, had been bedridden for three years with rheumatoid arthritis, but her husband and adult children neglected to take care of her, detectives said. The neglect was so bad, investigators said, that when 66-year-old Mary Hildreth Winston eventually died on October 25, 2012, her death was ruled a homicide.

She had developed ulcers on her body and a bedsore on her back so severe that it became an open wound, exposing her rib bones to open air, according a Hillsborough County sheriff’s spokesman.

He said bandages had been placed on the sores, but they weren’t changed regularly and fused to her wounds and by the time she died, the skin on her legs had fused together and the room smelled of decomposition, feces and urine. “Maggots became active on and inside her body,” he said.

Mary Winston died Oct. 25 from septic sequelae, a complication brought on by her arthritis, according to an arrest report.

She was last seen alive four days earlier by her son, who, according to the report, admitted to detectives on the day his mother died, that she needed medical attention.

The sheriff’s office said it took the state attorney’s office eight months to file charges against the Winstons because the agency was reviewing all the evidence in the case.

“You don’t want to rush to judgement and an arrest until all the evidence has been collected,” the sheriff’s spokesman stated. “We had to wait for the toxicology report and the autopsy report.”

Montgomery ‘Monty’ Winston is originally from Loubiere. His deceased wife, Hildreth, who served as a nurse in Dominica before migrating to the US, is from Roseau.

When last was she seen bay anyone who is not immediate family? What about her friends? Her church people? her co workers? what did they say when they asked for her? Did they deliberately kept her in hiding? While the parties were going on how did they keep her quite? she was obviously in pain. when did they give up on her? something is not making sense. what did she eat? I am disturbed and confused. I am saddened. so sorry. May her soul rest in peace. and may they find Jesus.

I have asked the very same questions and I am concerned that ‘we’ as West Indians change so much when we move to these countries. I mean, where were her friends, this woman had helped out so many people and had been caring to so many. No one went to look or called asking about her. This is what I find more sad!

Dont’ be rediculous. American media, forensics and related officials in that case dug deep before that came out. Sh died in October 2012, the family was arrested last week, why? because they wanted to be certain. Do you have other real, true evidence to share with the Dominican puclic? we are waiting!

I cannot believe how a husband and children can abandon their love one and allow her to die in that miserable state. I knew Hildreth very well we went to St. Martin school It is really unfortunate.

TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE MAKING EXCUSES OR REASONS TO DEFEND THESE PEOPLE- I FRAID ALL OF YOU.

There is no reason or circumstance for not only 1 or 2 or even 3…but 4 grown, healthy, well-groomed, very social people- to let a human being- a wife, mother, grandmother live and die with this indescribable suffering, filth and neglect.

Hope this sad, sad story helps us all be better people to our elders.

It is quite easy for all of us to come to our own conclusion regarding how the family cared for their family member. However, none of us were in their position caring for the mother. I do know how the system works in the US. It is not like back home! Pls. do not judge the family for I am sure they tried their best. It is not easy caring for someone at home in the condition the mother was in and who knows, maybe the family could not affort the hospital fees as in the US it cost thousands of dollars per day. Also, it may not have been possible to get the mother on a plane back to DA in her condition. If she was sent back to DA in her condition what would the hospital doctors and administration have done for her condition and well being? I can recall we had a similar situation a few years ago in DA when the hospital medical team could not help Deon Green when his body and legs were burn’t badly and he was left to suffer and rot for a year in his condition. His family did everything to help him but to no avail. Eventually his condition was brough to light by a family member who worked on his behalf to save his life and contacted a hospital in the US. His condition was reviewed by a medical team in the US who was willing to provide him with medical treatment for free. PS. take note: To put the record straight, it was not the Dominican Red Cross who saved his life and took all of the credit for his admission to the US and his recovery. How some of us want fame and recognision on the back of others. It was a family member who made all of the arrangement for the boy and saved his life with the assistance of the Red Cross in DA. SO please people, do not judge the family members because none of us were there to wittness the care and love they may have provided for their loved one. Thank you.

Are you freaking serious? I don’t know how you think they showed this woman any love and care. I hope they rot like they let this poor lady. This was the worse case of neglect EVER in Tampa. Their is NO excuse for this at all. They are just dirty wicked people that will have to face a judge here in Florida, then the judge above. RIP sweet lady you are home and no longer in pain.

@ Watching what are you really trying to say? Really! I wish you would google and read and stop trying to take for a family who neglected their own for 3 years. Is that caring or trying their best? The evidence is there to prove it. They took 8 months to gather evidence, why? because they wanted to be sure thy had a good case.

The family you are referring to tried but could do nothing more. Again the humane side of somebody in the USA help the guye. You are completely off with your scenario.

These people are not Americans so the state could actually leave them rot in their own misery as Karma will come back to them, however, the humane side of America came to play again. We need to adopt this in Dominica. You have to be evil to make you family lay in her urine and stool for 3 years, legs fused together, she never every bathed for 3 years. A nurse who cared for many. God sent Monty and his family to the right place. Now they need to be punished for what they did to this poor lady. Guess she got sick and was no longer valuable to them. Can you imagine 2 girl children who also had children contributed to ill treating their mother? Poor nurse died a sad death and I can imagine how they had crocodile tears at that funeral

Don’t you think that may be a bit of exaggerating here? She was neglected for 3 years but I am reading that they lived there. Just asking. Probably they were not able to deal with the care of her again just saying. One has to lift and turn and maybe she was very heavy again just saying. The husband is 68 and may (just saying) not able to lift her himself. We do not know about his health condition and I heard that he is not too well either. So regardless of what is said, I would like to hear their side of the story as well. Just saying.

ummmm…did you read and understand the news report above? They told you maggots took over the woman’s insides, bandages fused to her sores..does that sound like someone who was getting medical attention daily/regularly? Do not judge the family? doesn’t that sound like neglect to you?

    • LMAO
      June 29, 2013

absolute rubbish, a simple thing as a pillow between her legs would have prevented her legs from fusing together, it simply means that they never took the time to turn her position. When maggots take over you know what that means, the place was smelling of urine and feces, come on it is very clear that this was a situation of neglect. I am ashamed of these people. I leave them in the hands of God>

    • June 29, 2013

I am very disappointed by your litany of words and vain justification for such gruesome and horrific neglect. If they could not take care of the lady, they should have immediately send her to the hospital and have social services take it from here.

    • June 29, 2013

Did you listen to yourself? The only thing you wrote that made sense was that, the lady may have been too sick to travel.

That person you mentioned, Deon Green, according to you, his family was able to secure medical help for him in the U.S. yet you’re saying “I do know how the system works in the U.S.” Have you experienced the system?

I know how the system works in the U.S. Everyone gets medical assistance whether you have money or not. STOP BLAMING THE SYSTEM. That family SELFISHLY NEGLECTED their MOTHER and WIFE. Most bedsores heal. I can attest to turning the patient do not always work because my patient would not stay in any particular position because she said it was uncomfortable. However, I changed the pampers and dressing regularly. All it took was LOVE. NO REGRETS.

I am unable to comprehend that you state, do not blame the family. Surely you read the dilemma that the lady was in and which caused her demise. She suffered greatly. This is why they kept her and left her in that state. It is shocking beyond words.

Where they forbidden from visiting and caring for their mom, did the grandchildren ever see their granny? one bath a day …a few healthy meals…a turn to a different position in the bed…from the time the first bed sore appear hospitalize her…work out a payment plan, there are dozens of indigent programs available in Florida to hospitals and clinics caring for uninsured persons. If they didn’t know they should have been pounding on doors trying to get information of how to help this woman..She is at peace now and the will hopefully provide truthful answers so we can all better understand the root cause of something like this…

How do you know they were not doing these things for their mom? Three years bed ridden come on, if this lady had not received care from her family she would not have survived three years of being bed ridden. She would have died within a year of being bed ridden. Something went wrong along the way. We need to wait for their side of the story to find out what happened before judging and attacking them. You can’t take everything the media and police say to be fully true. I can tell you they exaggerate a whole lot.

To All My People – Take everything that the American media and police tell you with a grain of salt. They like to add to things to make them sound and seem much more than they really are, and they like to twist things to suit themselves. Never believe the stories that they give to be totally true and I’ve learned that over the years that I have lived here. From my experience I have seen how the police have given reports about things that were not present at all and about things that never really happened. I have seen the media interview people then cut out the things that were contrary to their story and twist the rest of the words to make their story seem true. Before you talk or blast, just remember this is just the police and the media story and it may not all be true. There may be another side of the story that the police and media are not giving. There is never one side to a story.

      • June 29, 2013

Yes they do exaggerate, but the fact remain the family DID NOT do what needed to be done for their mother and wife. Why do you think it took authorities eight months to bring this to light and file charges?

The bible says, “children, honor your mother and father that your days may be long upon thee earth.” Ephesians 6:2. It also says…”husbands, love your wives as Christ Loved the church.” Ephesians 5:25. WHY DID IT HAPPEN? HOW COULD IT HAVE HAPPENED? The point is very clear. It is because of SIN.

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5

So to all of you who are believers, I encourage you to pray for ‘Monty’ Winston; Hyacinth, and Belinda, that their eyes be opened up to this dark moment which is before them. And with repentant hearts they would cry out to God that the truth of what really occurred would be revealed in their testimonies before the U.S. Magistrate Judge.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Contrary to popular belief, having children is no guarantee that you will have someone to keep an eye on you in your old age.

We need to get down to the bottom of the facts on this one. Not how could this happen but rather why :?: There must be some sort of family history linked to this unfortunate piece of human misery.

What went on in this family when the children were young? Such things do not happen in loving homes. What would cause two grown women to despise their mother so much? Further, could this man ever have been a kind, gentle and loving father?

Being in such a state, she obviously starved to death. I surmise how many charges will be brought against them. If they are not landed or US citizens, in the end, after serving time, if it is not for a lifetime, they may be deported to Dominica.
If it is said that the husband was not living with her, according to the Law he is still her husband since they were not divorced. He was responsible for her. This is why he was also arrested. He and his children have hard, uncaring hearts.
My dear lady, wife and mother you are now at peace with God. I can imagine when you closed your eyes how peaceful it was for you that your sufferings were over. Dear one, rest in God’s peace, you who suffered so much on earth.
While you were suffering, God was preparing a place for you in Heaven. God is so good. How Great Thou Art Lord!

this news article is really sad. it really hit home. brings back memories of my grandmother who passed away without getting all of the help she could possibly get thanks to some of her children who didn’t see it necessary.
I am hoping that somewhere along the lines that there was someone who was willing to at least help her like in my grandmother’s case. but some family members are so adamant just so they can claim what the person has after they die. its not worth it.

I cannot read this it is to horrible to read
    This lady had a family!
    Two daughters after all,
What would a mother and wife do to deserve such a punishing death?
    These people has no heart
The deceased suffered I can feel that pain emotionally.
That’s why I told my husband and children if anytime I get to be a vegetable or whatever will have me depending on them for the rest of man life.
I told them to pull the plug.
Much less to have a condition ad the deceased with no one to help, I would rather die instead I have suffer like that.
NOBODY DO NOT DESERVE TO DIE LIKE THAT. PURE TORTURE.

Being undocumented is no reason to neglect your mother. They were not living in the Panhandle of Florida where getting medical care is a bit tough. And even so there are medical services for people who can’t afford health care. Justice will be served and they will pay for what they did to her. No one should have to die like that I would not wish that on my enemy.

I understand the expense for medical care in the states but they could at least keep her in good condition.I pray for God’s mercy for them in that situation. After all, they are my family and I need to hold them up in prayers.Let us all remember they children the siblings left behind. These children are without mothers today.

I am at a loss to understand what happened that cause this lady to be neglected that way. She was a lovely woman, good nurse and a nice person. She left Dominica to get a better life for her family and ended up receiving the worst treatment ever. Why? Are these people mentally ill? Were they living in the house at all? How could they live in the house, sleep, eat, drink and enjoy life while their mother and wife is rotting away on her bed? There is a lot that I do not understand. I hope CNN brings the court proceedings live so we can all find out what went wrong. Rest in peace, Sister Hildreth. I know you have forgiven them.

this is so sad but do you know that ppl do the same right here in DA, well i have never heard of anyone dieing in such a manner but persons bring there love ones to the hospital and forget them there thinking that all the daily cares are left up to the nurses and ward aids and when they are called back to take there love one home all of a sudden there is no home to take the person back to that is also a form of neglect, and that person end up becoming a border at a hospital. In some Ilands in the carbbean the police are called to contact the relatives to take home there love ones and then a district nurse will do a home visist from time to time to ensure that the persone is well taken care of. Nurses do home visits here in D/ca and are doing a grate job.
However families have to show more love for there elderly because remember if god bless us with long life we all will one day became elderly too mabe even bed ridden……..

Man, I understand all that thing about no papers and no pension and all that, but the fact remains they were two grown women inside the house, and there is no excuse that they let the situation get out of hand to that level.

With the way she was suffering, there had to come a time when the house was smelling. At that stage enough had to be enough, that is all you mother man. Papers or no papers, put the lady in a car, drop her off at the emergency room. Despite anything we say about Americans, that lady would have been taken care of in a hospital. That is your mom man. With two of you girls inside the house? Magwaysah!

She didn’t deserve this man. I knew this lady as a kind, good, hearted person. Cynthie was my class mate, I visited their home in Loubier in school days. I see Lyn every October when I go up for Miami Carnival, I would never have guessed. All you mother took care of all you. You guys raised well in Dominica.

Rather than looking out to the outmost for the lady, you guys were looking at self preservation first. What deep secret is there that you guys were trying to hide? Immigration does not pick up people easy so in the US. Well whatever fear all you had of the authorities, guess what now…

People have a right to look down on all you man. Big shame on all you.

  43. True Story
    June 27, 2013

I will add that it can happen any where. I am not casting judgment on the family in Florida because I do not know them. I will say that it happen in DA too. My Godparents had 13 children, 7 of whom are still in DA. Some are even in high ranking positions. Only one of her children in DA would ever visit her and bring her a plate of food. Plus he is a man. Her daughters were too busy with their lives. It’s unbelievable but one of her Grandchildren had to be paid by a family member to take care of her own grandmother and on top of that, she always wanted a raise. Plus, when one of the family visit home she would say what to send for her. Many times neighbors would say that nobody brought the lady food for the day and they would feed her (especially around festival time). There was a time some cousins went home and she was lying in bed in feces for God knows how long. They took care of her and stayed the night and know the granddaughter never showed up that day. She stayed alone for many days and nights. Unimaginable but she has daughters and sons in DA and not even on Mother’s Day they visited her. The children in foreign countries would put money together to pay the grand daughter to bring her a plate of food and clean her every day. Every time someone visited DA, they would come back with stories of the horrid conditions that poor lady lived in. Plus, this lady raised all her children in one little house until they were each at least 25 and older. She cooked, cleaned and never had a job because she had to take care of di chirren an dem! It happens more often than we know. This case just had a more devastating outcome. May she RIP.

I am utterly speechless, can’t stop crying, my colleague, friend, neighbor and we attended the same Catholic Church in Loubiere.

Nurse Winston did home visits in New Town, Loubiere, and Poiinte Mitchel. She attended diabetics and made sure they got the insulin shots, she attended their wounds, she vaccinated babies and school children. She took care of her needy neighbours in Loubiere and was always present at fund raising activities at church, she was a choir member—-what else can I say about my colleague? She so deserved to have someone look after her after all what she did. Nurse Winston would have been sooooooo much better off at home in D/a. Friends, neighbours and colleagues would gladly take turns to look after her. the saddest news I have ever heard. I’m literally sick to my stomach and find it hard to sleep.

May her soul rest in her Makers eternal peace.

Ppl. it’s not for us to judge, the Nurse Winston I know would not want any harm/punishment to come to her family. She raised them well, she sacrificed for them.

God only knows what was going on in their heads, whatever it was, they now know they did wrong. Leave the rest to God

living in america is not a bed of roses, if you do not have insurance up here, you are nobody, medical is very expensive, and everyone may say, get help from the government, etc. But it is not always easy, we cannot case any judgement, since none of us lived with them at the time. However, this is not an excuse for the way they treated their mother, wife. I am pretty sure there are other family members outside of those arrested who knew the situation and didn’t try to help. They all could have put cash together to help get her the care she deserved. Being well dressed out there, and your mother is suffering isn’t saying much of their characters. Spending time paying attention to others and their life stories does not help when they live in glass homes. I do pray for them, and hope they learn from their mistakes. Before people act they should think, because the consequences especially in america will not be taken lightly. The enjoyment of the finances after the death, may have done then good for a while, but look at this now? Time in jail, when their kids may end up in foster homes. Pray as a nation Dominica, rather than bring them down even more.

We are all better off in our homeland. Social Security would have given her something, Grotto and/or infirmary would never refuse her and plus her nursing friends would look out for her, This is utter evil behavior.

Dominicans in the U.S who are undocumented I am pleading to you to go back to your country when you reach that age. The government is getting tighter here, and so it is getting harder and harder for the undocumented. Especially since after 911. If you know you worked in Dominica all your life, is best you go back home and enjoy your pension and your nice house that you left down there, instead of living like a dog in the states.

    • June 28, 2013

Why does everyone think this family was undocumented, had no medical insurance, or even no financial means? I do not know the family, I do not know their circumstances, all I know is that the hospital DO NOT turn away anyone. Something happened, we do not know yet. If the women had children and people know where they are they should go and look for them. To everyone that is talking about they knew the lady and if they knew of her condition they would have gone to take care of her, or at least lend a hand, here is your chance to find her grand children, if any, and help them because they need it.

There are people in the U.S. who are citizens or permanent residents with NO medical insurance, NO jobs, NO anything. Yes, it is harder for some than others, but we still do not know what went wrong with this family.

  47. positive mind
    June 27, 2013

it is very hard to get help in the U.S when you are undocumented. Especially in the hard states like Florida. No nursing home is going to accept you if you have no source of payment. If you work here all your life, medicare and social security will pay for your residency at a nursing home. but Hildreth did not have that means. The children are also struggling but that is still no excuse to neglect her like that. they could at list bathe her and keep her clean, and try to feed her in the best way they could. get her out of bed everyday to prevent these bed sores. Miss Hidreth was such a kind, good hearted , caring person. May she rest in peace.

    • June 27, 2013

I do not believe, undocumented or not, it is hard to get help in the U.S. especially medical. I live in Florida, and I can assure you that Florida is not harder than any other State. NO ONE is DENIED medical assistance. Even if you are unable to make payments toward your medical care, in this case, the family should have come together to care for the lady, wife? mother? come on. Undocumented is a VERY, VERY POOR EXCUSE for allowing the lady to SUFFER til death. From what I read, I think a nursing home would have accepted the lady and worked with the family based on THEIR COMBINED INCOME. They did have an INCOME, right? I am sure the family was a loving one, but not toward their MOTHER and WIFE. I read that Ms. Hildreth worked as a nurse back home, who received her PENSION? True, if you worked here and is disabled, like she was, medicare and social security would have made payments toward her care. Understood that Ms. Hildreth probably was not qualified for Medicare and/or Medicaid, and her children was struggling but you are right, that is not an excuse to neglect her like that. They should at least bathe her, keep her clean, and feed her. I do not know these people, their situation, nor their reason, which there should be NONE, to treat her like they did. It really do not take TOO MUCH out of our personal lives to do what is NECESSARY to help our parents. TALKING FROM EXPERIENCE. Our MOTHER, not our father, did EVERYTHING for us when we could not. It is PRICELESS to return same. Our thanks is not from the world but from HEAVEN. Yes, may she rest in peace.

Someone laying down in bed staving, thirsty, not getting a bathe, wounds unattended and maggots investing their inner and outer bodies whiles they are still alive spells wickedness and cold heartedness. At every corner I can bet there are drugstore. Many counties and cities offer free medical care for documented and undocumented on a whole. The emergence rooms DO NOT turn you away, especial a woman in that condition. Most of all..every where you go in the world the Catholic Church will rend service to the needy, documented or undocumented, Catholic or Non- Catholic. I know that personally cause I am a seasoned volunteer and ministry worker. Whether its food, clothes, medical needs.. if the Church can’t help personally…they help you find it.

I am not sympathizing with the family in anyway, because what happened here is very tragic, but the fact is that most people are unprepared financially or otherwise to take care of a family member that requires constant care. I have read a lot of comments of condemnation here, but how many of us can honestly say if one of our family members was in that position that we could quit our jobs to take care of that person full time, have the finances to be able to hire a nurse or home health care aid or anyone for that matter full time? There are a lot of questions here, but the answers are not simple.

anon…although many of us may not be financially or even mentally prepared to deal with a sick individual long term, you have to admit that it doesn’t take a wealthy person to have enough compassion to bathe that person, or at least roll them over often enough to not sick to their own selves. air is still free and with more than 3 of them living in that house there seemed to have been enough man/woman power to lift her off that bed from time to time. nurse Hildreth dedicated her life to caring for others and it’s sad that in her time of need she didn’t get the care that she gave. how can the family appear so happy and have the time and money to drink and party from state to state and yet not have the money to replace the sheets? one less bottle of alcohol could buy a fresh nighty. it’s not our place to judge what should happen to the family and decide whether they belong in heaven or hell, but it really doesn’t make the situation any less disturbing

Between four grown people, how much resources does it take to wash your mother and turn her over so she doesn’t get bedsores ’til her bones show. And in the U.S. if you don’t have much money, you will get free medical care. It is easier than if you do have a little money. You just fill out some forms and voila, you’re taken care of. In the States, if your poor, you get taken care of. If your rich, you have the money to take care of yourself or with insurance, but if your middle class, you struggle. If they were illegal, who cares…you’re going to let your wife/mother die because of that. She would still get medical help. OMG!

There is no excuse for this type of neglect. If the government officials knew of the mother’s predicament they would have helped. It’s ironic that her job in Dominica was to take care of the sick (Nurse) and yet her own family neglected her to that extreme. I hope they take time off to reflect on their actions. No one deserved this kind of treatment!

How sad! Myy heart aches to know how she suffered. Visualize ourselves in such a manner. I cannot believe that they, her supposedly loved ones would have treated her in such an inhumane manner. This was no love. They do not have a godly heart to see their loved one suffering and did not contact the doctor or brought her to a hospital. How she suffered!
There is no excuse for them. They could have got government and medical help to take care of her.
How could they live in the same home with her under this condition? These are heartless people.
Did they not expect her to die? When the autopsy was revealed did they not consider that they would be held responsible for her death?
She must have worked hard and also saved some of her money. They took it all and used it for their selfish means while allowing her to suffer. What could she have done to deserve this treatment and for from those who supposedly loved her. She was helpless, at their mercy and was obviously yearning to receive proper care. Shame on them!
This is where the fair Law comes in. What goes around comes around in time. The Florida Law will handle them. No doubt about that, it should be imprisonment for them for life.
Fellow Dominicans, knowing how she suffered at that time, a suffering I would not wish for anyone or myself, we have reason to shed tears for her and to thank God who took note and relieved her of her sufferings. There is no doubt she is now enjoying the love, happiness and peace, eternal bliss in Our Almighty Father’s Heavenly Kingdom, as Our Lord Jesus Christ promised to us.
The fair and just recompense of God will always prevail until the end of time.

        June 28, 2013

You are correct. No matter how perfect we are mistakes do happen. I have noticed that my keyboard really needs to be repaired. This computer system cost a lot of money – from Dell (all paid for) through Microsoft, supposedly reputable enterprises. Some companies sell inferior products at an exorbitant fee which customers are not aware of. They could also sell refurbished and/or second hand products. Once the customer pays them, they have nothing to do with them. This is the US and also Canada of all.
I am one who loves specialized, prompt and dignified attention. I have lost confidence in Dell and Microsoft and for other reasons. Due to my experience, I will not recommend them.
Yesterday I heard on TV that McAfee who sold his business for billions of dollars complained about the enterprise he sold his business to. In brief, he said they operate inferiorly. I had to laugh.
My plan is to purchase a new keyboard or a new computer system and from, hopefully, a reputable enterprise.
No wes pay e may does not know me. Who is this person anyway and how educated? I did not have to correct the word but being a perfectionist I did.
I always read my writings and check out the spelling. What this person does not know about me and fail to see is that I am educated; I learned to type from a young age and I am a proficient and fast typist; also took courses in business administration.
Therefore, no wes pay e may, if you do not know anything about a person, keep quiet and do not take it as your personal business. I am putting it mildly.

This story is so unfortunate yuh…I am just sad…

I hope this incident opens up our eyes to the abuse and neglect our elder receive everywhere, even in Dominica.

No elderly deserves to be neglected or abused.

People who are aware of abuse of the elderly and do not report it or do something about it, are to be considered enablers.

If your mom or dad or grandparents live with you and you do not have the patience to care for them when they are in need, incontinent or experience altered mental status, then, maybe you should not be the one to care for them.

Ask for assistance for their care. Take turns among the children when things get too heavy. See professional medical help and guidance.

But I am just so saddened by this.

We need more awareness and protection rights for our elderly against abuse.

It says here that the sherieffs took 8 months to investigate before filing charges.

‘You don’t want to rush to judgement and an arrest until all the evidence has been collected,” the sheriff’s spokesman stated. “We had to wait for the toxicology report and the autopsy report.”’

I lost my mother last year and since then, I am just not myself, its like 75% of me is gone, I feel like a shell, and for me life will never be the same without my mother. I lost my dad when I was a child and mama was daddy and mama. Loosing mama….is like I am not interested in anything on this earth again, the person whom I would enjoy these things with is no longer there. When my mother complained about any pain in her body, I felt it, as I speak about her, there is an excruciating pain in my heart.
Maybe nurse wanted to be home with her family but in the US there are trained nurses who make home visits to help take care of people in those conditions. Bed sores are developed when the person stays in one place for too long and there is little flesh on the area, so the bones are rubbing on the bed etc.. for too long, heat etc, so its clear that the treatment home was insufficient, she needed professional care and these people were intelligent enough to have said to her mom, we need to bring in a professional person to take care of you. These conditions, require regular baths, cleaning of the wounds every day, clean bed linen. I am not a medical person but I read a lot about these things because at some point I envisaged I would need to know about that. OMG. my heart aches.

The Lord has ordained that through it all, life has to go on. Think of all those who have lost parents and other loved ones. In time, the pain of losing them dissipates while memories will always remain. Healing takes time. However, the Lord does not want you (us) to keep mourning. Holy Scripture tells us to mourn for a while
Yes, you will always miss your beloved mother as others do for their mothers/parents. Whenever you think of her pray for her soul that it rests in peace. This gives much peace to the heart and mind.
Give your mourning to Our Lord Jesus Christ that you might have peace of mind. God bless you and heal you.

I thank God which I had prayed for, that she did not linger before death claimed her, as She was in D/A and I am in the US. These people are in enough trouble as it is but it is hard to understand how this could be allowed to go on for so long. I do not know what their their situation was, but long Term care in the US is only available for documented and US citizens. So their hands were tied, but between four people they could have done a better job of taking care of her. This is heartwrenching.

In fact, she would not have been in this dilemma of illness if she were in Dominica. She was not given proper care which is why she ended up in this manner.
There are some people who migrate to those lands for a better life whose hearts become hard and uncaring.
You are correct. It was better that she was in Dominica. She probably yearned to go home to Dominica where she would have been given proper care. Poor lady! For her sufferings, she is now at peace with God.

    June 27, 2013

This is such a sad day for Dominica hearing this news. We are known to be caring, loving and friendly people, how did this happen? All I can say is this is sheer negligence on the part of the family. My heart is broken as I knew them so well, as a kid growing up I spent time after school with Hyacinth (affectionately known to her school mates as Cynthie). This family was so fortunate or should I say well off. Beautiful house in Madrelle, mother a well established and recognized nurse in Dominica. They all moved to the US after Cynthie was done with school (DGS, graduating class of 1987) and we have never seem them again.
My heart is breaking at this time, how did they allow that to happen? how can you listen to an elderly person to give instructions on her medical condition when her own mind is giving up on her, come on folks where is the love in your heart towards your own mother and wife. My heart hurts terribly.

As a people we have to tackle the problems we have created. The take what I can get and belief that some have of entitlement is destroying our culture. When greed hatred and liming take the place of compassion and strong social values society falls apart. Everyone is asking why DA is having problems and the answer is easy. Self reliance and the celebration of accomplishment has been deteriorating since hurricane David. Barrels from overseas, older men living abroad paying for young girls rent and asking for handouts has become acceptable for some. Bring back pride. Bring back resolve. Reject a handout and celebrate the work it takes to provide for oneself. We are blessed to live on an island where there may not be a lot of jobs but our lifestyles can be wonderful if we take the time to develop ourselves. Forget the Niki and big screen TV. Forget about who sleeping with who and for what. Remember family, neighborhoods, community and country and we can once again be proud of ourselves. And please stop blaming the government for all of our problems.

I don’t think people on here should be generalizing. I am a Dominican leaving in the states and have been a hospice nurse for years now and believe me it is not easy to take care of an ailing loved one. Now I am in no way saying that what they did was right, they should have to pay to the fullest extent of the law. But what I am trying to figure out is how do you stay in a house with someone in that condition because bed sores does not smell good, they stink up the whole house. Wow shame.

    • June 27, 2013

No, it is not easy, but you DO IT because it is your MOTHER, your WIFE. My mother was bedridden and in HOSPICE care for almost five years. She got bed sores three times and survived all. When people visited if I did not tell them of her condition they would not know. There was NO smell at any time. I DID IT, with the daily help of a nurse for dressing and an aide for baths. At night, it was all me. I worked whenever possible and for most of her illness I was at her bedside. Maybe my situation was a little different, but Ms. Hildreth had a wider window. A husband and three children. By-the-way, my brother was also sick and helpless at the same time as my mother. I went back and forth with them. Thank God we lived in the same city. All it took was determination, and LOVE. I was persistent in standing firm that hospice care was done in my house for my mother because hospice care for my brother had proven not in her best interest.

The husband is just as guilty. Even if he did not live with her/them, divorced or not, he should have some sort of empathy for her. She was the mother of his children, he had a relationship with her at some point, he is not better than the children because he knew he was sick. This was his family. Where is the LOVE?

    • Justice and Truth
      June 28, 2013

When she got sick the husband parted ways. Is this not common with some men? I have heard this before when wives get sick the men take off. They want nothing to do with them. What happened to: “In sickness and in health, ‘til death do we part?” Typical example, he was not in love with her or fell out of love. True love never fades and fails.
After the Florida Court is through with them, at the end of their lives they will face God’s fair judgment and recompense.

And what bad ways is that you speak of? As far as I know Dominicans are very hospitable, kind to the sick and infirmed and neighbours look out for neighbours. How does one neglectful family actions reflect a nation of people at home and abroad who are caring, loving and just the warmest people the world over?

      • justice
        June 27, 2013

I am not speaking of our hospitality my dear, I mean we have a tendency of thinking bush can solve ALL our medical issues, and that is not always so. Sometimes we need more serious medical intervention. wiping and wrapping an open wound as severe as a bed sore is not enough. That lady needed maybe antibiotics for the infected wounds ( NOT A DOC just got experience in the medical field) but yeh i TOTALLY AGREE we are one of the most loving and caring people in the world.

Something was definitely not right. There are TOO MANY places that would have taken and care for her. We do not know what went wrong but these people did something terrible. June 27, 2013

When some Dominicans migrate, they feel they are too big to take care of their parents. You have no idea how much of them living good and leave the burden of the parents for those still living in Dominica. Sometimes not even a cent to help buy the basics. I feel that if you are not there to help take care of your parent, you should at least send some money or food, i mean the basics. You can go to the Dollar Store and collect so much for so little. Those left in DA could jump on a plane too and leave but they are there taking care of the parents. Give your brothers or sisters or aunts or cousins the motivation. Please help. I would died if I knew my brothers or sisters had left my mother to suffer like that. I am not even talking about the husband. I love my mother so much that I prefer to stay without to make sure that she has.

She was right there with them….they are the ones who were taking care of her according to the newspaper.

    • Stress!
      June 27, 2013

I endorse that totally, when they hit the big city life all the pain and struggles their parents gone through their being like they have arrived. Can you believe you and your mom live in the US, your mom is diagnosed with a terminal sickness and you send her to Dominica to die knowing full well that medical treatment is of a much higher standard than that in Dominica, what makes it worse is that your mom passes and you cannot attend the funeral because you are illegal in the country. This is the type of misery some Dominican Parents are faced with. If you are a true loving and caring person you would surely die inside. Dominicans overseas needs to step up and take care of their loved ones, back home, the neighbor would definitely help as we loom out for each other.

    • June 27, 2013

Some cannot wait to leave and not look back. You are so right. I think regardless to how your parents treated you as a child, as an adult you have the responsibility to take care of them. God loves us. Do the right thing. Some do not even visit their parents.

      • June 27, 2013

She had two daughters, a son, and a husband. They all work, I assume. Regardless to the financial situation, they had to have a motive. What a family. I hope they do not have children, if they do, what kind of grand children are they. Oh boy.

If this situation had come to light and through the Florida Media of all, many people would have come to her rescue as they do in many cases and to raise funds to assist her. They kept this situation to themselves.

I cannot imagine somebody would connect that situation to skerrit. Even if he is not my cup of tea, he introduced the “yes we care programme” to assist the elderly and shut ins, so it showed that he cared for people who do not have the care and attention they need.
I feel sorry for nurse to have suffered that way. I lived in the same area with her in Loubiere, she cared for people so much as a nurse and to see its her own children who allowed her to suffer so much and die out of neglect. In a country where there are so many things in place for care of the sick and elderly. I am sure they were collecting her social security benefits.
Even she preferred to stay home, there are home services, or home health aid to help care for persons in that condition.

If people do not support a government, there is no reason why they should always blame and lambaste that government and the leadership for everything and at every turn.
If the Prime Minister did something good that benefitted nationals, he should be commended for it and deserves it.

that is what am thinking too, they cannot be from D/ca. We are better than that. The lady own in front but theirs are behind. Can you imagine her own flesh and blood made her rot on her own bed? What could she have done to them to make their hearts so cold.

They cannot be from Dominica? Why not? So you mean elderly people in Dominica do not get neglected? It happens here every single day. The only difference is Dominica is small and every one knows each other. People look out for people more. So at least a friend or a neighbor would have helped her out.
There are many many many Dominican right here at home who DO NOT take care of their parents. We all know that so let us not be hypocrites. The proof is at GROTO. Go ask them how many people there and no body not checking them

Lord have mercy ,a mother is so precious and to be treated that way! it’s a pity I never had the chance to show love and appreciation to my parents I lost them at a very young age, may your soul RIP.

That’s just evil. Pure evil. She must have been in so much pain.

  147. June 27, 2013

what you saying oh my God that is heartless. bring her in the hospital and leave her there she will get help and care. why didn’t you send for me to take care of her. Dominicans don’t let that repeat it self.Mother am sorry for disobeying you but I love YOU.

Its quite unfortunate because this woman took care of her children and her family as a whole> when they were in threat of losing their home, sick as she was she left florida and returned to Dominica to work in an effort to save the house. Lynn and cynthie were always well dressed and clean growing up. we were in the same youth group.

Anyway Hildreth you are gone now…………but their turn coming up

      June 27, 2013

Agree with you, what goes around comes around, their kids will do the same to them, and KARMA will deal with them

This is no surprise news, for us in Florida, this woman died miserable

The Winstons had the American dream in DA, but since arriving in the USA, everything went down hill

Hildreth for sure you are in a better place and justice will be serve

how come alyu not sending mapwe for that one. this is diabolical. THis lady was treated worst than an animal, who in there right senses would leave a human being to suffer like that, she must have been in serious pain.
I do hope that all their troubles are small ones.
Yay she rest in total peace, she is out of her misery. Ignorant people that is DA people for you. Go on do what you guys are best at sending mapwee

That is what happens to us when we move to those big countries, for forget to take care of our own or rather neglect them, we tend to follow those heartless people who don’t care about their enderly love ones. But again how is it that the health authorities did nothing to help the family.

Some how you had to find a way to blame somebody else. Smh!! They are grown folks! Nobody made them into heartless people. Have you ever been anywhere outside of dca?? Stupes with your nonsense comment.

Speak for yourself. Do not judge the evil of the 5% by the good of the 95%. There are thousands of us Dominicans living abroad. Do you hear all of us doing bad? We go to work, take care of our famuies, pay our bills and send our hard earned dollars to relatives back hme. Back Off on the generalization. This is one incident. Stop making the blanket ignorant statements.

    June 27, 2013

very sad… but some Dominicans who leave home and live abroad become as cold and heartless as the country they live in.. such a shame on the kids for not taking care of their mom.. they should all be jailed!

    • Wesleyman
      June 27, 2013

Honestly you really think they got that way because of the country they live in? The only difference is that if this lady was in Dominica some relative or friend would have pitched in and helped, whereas being away from home there was no one there to assist, but people are people no matter where they live, a Dominican is being tried in court as we speak for cutting off the head of a fellow Dominican and dumping his body, well my friend this happened in Dominica, so stop being hypocritical, Dominicans are like everybody else, Good and Evil

This is awful!!! Does the husband and children have mental health problems? Some spouses can be cruel but how on earth can any sane person treat their Mum like this????? There must be underlying issues in the family. Only God can judge. May she rest in peace.

To All My People – Take everything that the American media and police tell you with a grain of salt. They like to add to things to make them sound and seem much bigger than they really are, and they like to twist things to suit themselves.
There is never one side to a story.

a quarter truth of the story is an atrocity…. besides this is no hollywood of celebrities account… this comes from an 8 month investigation resulting from an initial medical report. they wouldn’t have investigating if there weren’t any evidence on the victim after the body was removed
