Dominican schools encouraged to take advantage of three weeks delay in CXC exams this year

The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence is encouraging schools in Dominica to take advantage of the three weeks delay in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) exams this year.

Following feedback from regional Ministries of Education on the timing of 2022 regional examinations, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) agreed at meeting held last week, to delay sitting of the regional examinations by three weeks to provide candidates with additional time to prepare for the examinations..

The Council said it recognized the impact of COVID-19 on the education system in general and on the schedule of CXC’s regional examinations and had therefore, reviewed and reached consensus on recommendations from CXC’s School Examinations Committee (SEC), on the strategy for the 2022 regional examinations.

“The news of a three weeks delay in the CXC exams is welcomed by the Ministry of Education, “Education Minister Octavia Alfred said at a news conference last week. “Although we were working towards the previous date, schools put their best foot forward, students completed their SBAs, all schools completed mock exams, some schools already had final assembly for their students and some of our students are already on study break and we were in the mode to start CXC.”

She encouraged maximization of the three weeks.

“Because these three weeks could be the three most essential in a fifth former’s life. These three weeks can determine if a student passes or if a student fails…These three weeks could determine if a student gets a one or if a student gets a two,” Alfred noted.

She added, “We have these three weeks and I encourage schools if students are already on study break we need to call them back in, we need to review some of our mock exams results, not as a group but as individual results, so that if we have any individual attention we need to give specific students on certain concepts that we can use these three weeks to do that.”

Alfred mentioned further that students have a chance to pull up some of their SBAs to be revised.

“That is our chance to allow our students to go to the exam room with a good SBA grade which will help to carry them through the rest of the exams ,” she noted.

Meantime, the minister revealed that some of the officers from the Ministry of Health will be passing around in the schools to assist as they get ready for the exams.

“For me, my plea is for the schools even if you were already in a mode for exams next week. We need to now motivate ourselves and bring the children back,” she urged. “Bring them back to the schools and let us see if we can beef up in certain areas, so that we can maximize and get the best results because those three weeks are crucial, those three weeks are gold…”

Chief Education Officer (CEO) and Registrar of CXC, Dr. Wayne Wesley, said exams will begin from Monday, May 23, 2022, with results projected to be released by late August or early September.

CXC also announced the extension of the submission of SBAs from June 30, 2022, by a further two weeks for the submission of both CAPE and CSEC SBAs.

Who is the heaviest cabinet minister? I think it would be a good idea going forward for every minister to be weighed upon taking office then register their weight every 3 months to see how they doing because what I am looking at right now is not a good example for our children going to school
