Dominican youth given opportunity, through virtual workshop, to upgrade writing skills in performance poetry and song 

Young Dominican spoken word artistes ad poets have been presented with a unique opportunity to upgrade their writing skills and performance technique through a Performing Arts Virtual Workshop to be facilitated by well-known Dominican spoken-word artiste and performer Delmance “Ras Mo” Moses.

The workshop will be held from May 25th to June 16th, 2022.

The workshop is part of an on-going project by CultureMedia Service Inc and the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP -Dominica) to raise awareness on environmental issues and the climate crisis as well as to mobilise local civil society organisations and individuals on actions to protect and safeguard Dominica’s environment and ecosystem.

The performing arts workshop is aimed principally at engaging young people 30 years and under who are writers of poetry and songs to help create and produce content to give expression and voice to issues on the environment and on ways to address the challenges of the climate crisis in our country, the region and globally.

The workshop which will be delivered virtually using an online platform that will enable young performing artistes to be equipped with enhanced skills and technical competencies in the creative process for performance poetry and songs as well as to create opportunities to produce content through small group work.  At the end of the exercise, the workshop will provide a platform for the sharing of material created and for performances of the final products from the creative process.

The workshop sessions will involve a creative process in writing and performing to include:

  1. Issue analysis
  2. Juxtaposing contemporary popular culture with tradition
  3. Prioritization of creative song writing and poetry writing style
  4. Defining target audience(s) and writing and producing for that audience

Young people wishing to participate in this workshop are invited to complete a registration form to indicate their interest and demonstrate their desire to join in the efforts to safeguard the environment and to help in mitigating against the threats of climate change and its impacts.
