Dominicans being urged to file income taxes

Dominicans are being encouraged to file their income tax returns.

Acting Comptroller of the Inland Revenue Division Sylma Lloyd who spoke during an interview, said the deadline for filing these taxes is March 31st 2023.

“We are pleading to persons to come in to file your income tax returns,” she said.

She continued, “We have persons on hand who are available from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Mondays and from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesday to Fridays.”

According to Lloyd, the government has approved a number of tax policy measures, “in that regard, persons are going to be allowed additional deductions on their employment income when filing their returns.”

She explained that one of these measures is an increase of the student loan and there are a number of conditions that have to be met.

“The employees in particular have the benefit of claiming additional allowances against their employment income,” Lloyd stated.

She went on to state that eligible taxpayers who include students, will be able to claim the full interest figure paid against their student loan.

“The second benefit is that eligible taxpayers will be allowed to claim also, the premium speed in respect of health insurance for the year 2022 against their employment income,” she indicated.

Lloyd said that additionally, taxpayers are allowed to claim insurance premiums against an owner-occupied property in the amount of up to $8000 annually.

She also took the opportunity to remind employees of their obligations to submit TD5 in respect of the details of the remunerations paid to their employees.

“This should be done in order that tax returns files can be processed swiftly,” the Inland Revenue official stated.

She said the Inland Revenue is committed to improving the services being offered to tax payers and as such is embarking on a new project that will facilitate the online filing process and hopefully this can be rolled out before the deadline of 31st March, 2023.

Citizens can only file income tax on money they earn from Employment, and investments!

The average people: or let me say eight-five (85%) percent or so of the people in Dominica do not have any paid income; so on what amount will they file, since ( 0-0 =0); that is zero-zero equal zero.
The only people in the country who should be subjected to that are the few civil servants; Roosevelt Skerrit, and his passport salesmen, women, they are the ones living high on the intestine of the hog.

If there is a pay as you earn income tax system where taxes are deducted weekly or monthly from ones pay and turned over to the government; those are the people obligated to file income tax returns, there might be a few people in the public sector, working in a mum and pap store, whether they file or not will not make any difference, due to the starvation peanuts change they are paid.
Dominicans are asks to file income tax returns is simply absurd!

This whole time Skerrit has been undermining the institutional structures in place to keep the Country running smoothly, including Tax collection. The amount of favored FAs I see with Rims and SPOILERS this can’t be a real country trying to move from poverty into reality. The volume of ppl on that 500 dollars a month Salary in DA is counterintuitive and cannot sustain the tax requirement or the future Social Security needs. Go Figure. Voodoo Economics.

Some of the comments here make no sense. Typical UWP nonsensical talk. Dominica does not look broke to me when it offers so many deductions. In which other country is home insurance premiums deducted? Not in the USA for sure. And many folks actually get a tax refund when they file a tax return; so it is best to file.

USA is beyond broke though. Aren’t they literally in trillions of dollars of debt? These countries have fake economies propped up by magic money that their governments print every time they need to spend on war or some other BS. The only reason the US hasn’t reached the level of Venezuela yet is because of the USD is treated as a world reserve currency. That’s why they are so anti-crypto despite being the country that practically created the internet and one of the leading technology hubs in the world. Because if crypto was adopted world wide it would completely eliminate the need for the dolar as a world reserve currency

You for sure live in Skerrits phantasy ‘Cloud Cookoo-Land’. It is absolutely frightening to listen to the nonsense of these supporters of the CM. Why don’t you, JADED, come to live in Skerrit land of milk and honey? You rather live in Uncle Sam country and be taxed to death? You make me laugh, hypocrite. OMG!!!

The state coffers would be bigger if Skerrit reduces his swollen monthly allowance.

If the federal government “urged” me to pay taxes, I would just laugh in their faces. If I don’t report my taxes accurately the penalties would be severe, so I dutifully pay.

It appears the state coffers are more than empty. They appeal to people to file. I knew it all along, that the CM would bankrupt our country eventually. And he still hasn’t accounted for the missing CBI funds yet, let alone the USD100 million, that Venezuela had to write of. Skerrit, what have you done with all that money. And the taxpayers still pay his rent to top it all. Dominicans, wake up…

Marie, what does filing income-tax have to do with “coffers” being empty?

The Government urges the people to file income-tax, which will decide whether they paid too much taxes, or did not enough during the year of employment.

The truth is, only a very few large income owners would have paid less taxes, then they must pay at income assessment time. What is the percentage of taxpayers of that category in Dominica?

Still for all, most tax payers are entitled to claim an amount for this, that, and the other thing; and based on the amount of taxes that they pay –they would be entitled to a refund.

Many working people under 65 years of age, especially those with children under 18, in Canada, get back almost all, or all of the income tax which they paid for the taxation year. Is that refilling the “coffers” of the county?

You see, you just keep on talking utter nonsense. What has Canadas revenue system in common with Dominicas one? Nothing, absolute nothing. Dominicas system is actually unique in the world because they have two systems, one being a normal tax revenue system and the other one being a shady unaccounted system of CBI revenue and international aid. Do you think Canada runs two systems like that? One even totally unaccounted for? Woman, go away! You are not well in your head.

Yes, that is within the American and Canadian system where you “pay as you earn.” In Dominica they even do what they call an assessment, where some idiot hears of a farmer, and sends them a bill in the mail claiming they owe X amount of money in taxes.

And since you are Roosevelt Skerrit grandmother tell us how many people do you know receive money from tax returns because they overpaid in Dominica!

Our employment rate is high and along with that plenty people make less than $10,000 a year.
What taxes you can get out of that?
So much foreigners working here but paying no taxes…….is inland revenue aware of anything like that at all? No rumors that were investigated?
De donkey well beat up and bleeding by de side of de road …….you passing every day watching de donkey suffer now you want Dat donkey to give you milk?
We see what you do to de cow for de milk already…..de cow dead in de grass!!!
You want milk even though it mixed with blood now?

@dissident, I don’t know why you have 9-0 positive thumbs rating right now, but I gave you a negative one, eh!

All that you wrote here is flawed, starting with your saying that “employment is high” and yet with that observation, you go on to write negatively. Is a high rate of employment not a good thing for a country?

People who earn less than $10,000.00 in Dominica will usually not be qualified for a tax refund, especially if they did not have an “inland revenue identification”; the government would not know who they are, so that situation is an advantage for them–not a disadvantage

Those who earned more than $10 000.00 may be entitled to make claims of expenditure, by which they will receive part or all of the tax payment they made for the taxation year–another advantage.

So the reason for the yearly tax assessment is for the benefit of all. Taxation is one of the ways for the sake of social & economic growth of any Nation

Dominica clearly has cash flow issues. The country is broke! Get rid of income tax and use VAT only. Make the country a tax free nation. We don’t have money to pay for student scholarships, gas, nothinf

” … eligible taxpayers will be allowed to claim also the premium speed in respect of health insurance.”
Is this English that the Public can understand ? Please clarify.

” … employees are also reminded of their obligations to submit TD5 in respect of the details of the remunerations paid to their employees.”
Do “employees” have “employees” ? Please clarify.

    Thank you.

Gobbledygook of the worst kind. If anybody with a normal mind can understand that I be surprised. Better they start taxing these people with so called approved projects that do not pay import duty and no tax on profits for up to twenty five years. That is an invitation to carry cash into the bank every week in a laundry bag and say it is receipts from customers. One big open door for smart operators if you ask this Dominican. No surprise regular foreign banks finding the temperature getting too hot for comfort here. They don’t want to end up with trackmarks in their underpants.

Not only don’t they pay any taxes, they also get rewarded from the CBI treasure chest, some even before the project is actually finished. See the famous Anichi resort in Portsmouth. The ‘developer’, a well known passport agent and Skerrit worshipper got money in advance and now he doesn’t finish the project. Skerrit can’t do anything about it because the ‘developer’ knows of a few hidden skeletons. The same actually goes for the public works site. The same ‘developer’ involved in this project as well. If only all you would know half what the CM and his cabal are up to in your own country…!!

I thought of that first sentence as well. She may have said that she took the opportunity to remind employers of their obligations. Well, if I don’t understand I just not filing. I made $11,327 last year, I paid gas tax, clothes tax, water tax, light tax, cooking gas tax, bus tax, insurance tax, babysitter tax, plus my bank loan and with a high interest rate. I’m sinking in taxes. But I’m still taxed to help pay for someone house rent that’s $64,000.00/month. Isn’t that something???

They might pay the VAT but that’s probably it. I mean some of them even GOT money from the CBI treasure chest to expand and improve their business.

@Odin, your observation is on point.

The thing is that the news article said: “Revenue Division Sylma Lloyd who spoke during an interview”.

So if DNO simply wrote what she said, what you observed could be a “typo” from them. I myself do a lot of them, to speak the truth. That is because my fingers on the keyboard is faster than my mind, and Grammarly, cannot correct all of our mistakes. For example they cannot identify the difference between “employee” and employer”

So let us not be too critical, even if it is good to point it out. This should cause us to practice doing more steadfast proofreading, as we write our messages to the public.
