Dominica’s 2020 calypso monarch, Jay Dee, attributes his win to ‘two great songs’

The smile says it all as Jay Dee receives his crown

Dominica’s new calypso monarch Jude “Jay Dee” Delauney, believes that this year, his songs put him in a good position to win the title.

Six years after he first entered the carnival calypso competition, Jay Dee hit the jackpot after he delivered two sterling performances which helped him to outperform the other finalists on Saturday night at the Windsor Park forecourt.

The new Monarch said when a calypsonian has great songs, the work is easier.

“You can see everything happening even before it happens, so it’s just putting it into effect,” Jay Dee told reporters shortly after being crowned.

The calypsonian, who is from Pte. Michel, said he was confident in his performance after the first round of the competition.

“It’s like I set the bar for the whole competition and the Mas was just Mas,” he said.

“I am elated; I am ecstatic, right now,” Jay Dee exuded. “From 2014 to now, it’s a big improvement, two great songs.”

“We did it!” he exclaimed.

Tasha P copped the 1st runner up position with De Webb taking 2nd runner up and Bingo securing the 3rd runner up spot.

A well deserved break! Pat Aron your political decisiveness was rejected again. Sour sour is uneducated, but he has the humor and humility you the educated genius is lacking. Again your song fits you so well Da Ca Lalie, that’s exactly what you get.

Going into the competition, thought Tasha P would have won. I believe her songs were lyrically stronger and had a broader appeal than Jaydees but on the night of the show she failed to enunciate her lyrics. I thought it was a problem with the sound system and it may well have been but Jaydee’s was clearer, you could easily tell from the audience’s response to his songs. The judging seemed to be acceptable because they had the best songs for carnival 2020. Either of them receiving the coronation would be welcomed by me. It was pleasantly refreshing to see the maturity in their calypso’s.

King Dice does not seem to be growing, his songs seem to have the same tune.

One wish is that our Calypsos must have a broader appeal. No longer can you sing calypsos only for Dominican appetites and audiences. Calypso is becoming increasingly international and our artiste should begin to tap into that market. Nobody knows our songs in TNT. Grenada, Antigua and St. Lucia calypsos all sang in…

Ras B. We have to agree to disagree. I respect your opinion but here is mine. From what I understand are the fundamentals of calypso Jaydee songs both had more of these elements than tasha ps songs. For example tasha s all hands on deck is more prosaic than poetic. Jaydee use wit and humour, not to say a calypso must have wit but it is a fundamental

        Ivenia,
I am pleased that you read my posting though I am not sure you understood what was being said. I am not sure that I understand your comment. I was complimentary to both artiste and the judging. I still believe that the both artiste had the best compositions.

Should you take some time to listen to king Dice’s calypso’s you will see a striking sameness in their tunes.

Additionally, the four songs of the king and the first runner up were of a sufficiently high quality, hence my observation of the maturity realised in their lyrics. Unfortunately, I had to lament about the lack of reach of our calypsos. Dominica, we must understand has a declining population and our calypsonians singing only to the appetites of our local audiences cannot expect to live of this art form. Hence my desire to see them broaden their appeal so they may get their rightful share of the market of this growing art form. See what the Jamaicans are gaining from Reggae and dancehall!!! and TNT is…
