Douglas predicts another election sweep for DLP

Douglas on the campaign trail in 2014

Parliamentary representative for the Portsmouth Constituency, Ian Douglas has said that the upcoming general election will yield another sweep of the polls for the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).

He said that notwithstanding, the DLP has developed a mindset for not taking elections for granted.

“I think it will be another sweep at the polls quite frankly but like I have always told my colleagues, and I think all the colleagues including the leadership of the party… have grown accustomed to not taking elections for granted and that has always been our mantra in the labour party,” Douglas said on state-owned DBS Radio.

The Porstmouth constituency MP added, “We believe that every seat is important… we go after every seat; we leave no seat unturned. For example, you will see that we are aggressively pursuing seats like Marigot and Salisbury even if they are known to be United Workers Party strongholds and in addition to which we believe that every voter is important, That’s why we go out to interact and to engage every voter in an election.”

Douglas said the DLP is going for its 5th consecutive year in government, noting that not many political parties have achieved this in the Caribbean.

At the DLP’s Delegates Conference on February 16, 2019 Prime Minister Skerrit announced a new slate of candidates which included thirteen changes and which he described as the “new look” Labour, “the fresh faces of change in Dominican politics.”

The next general election in Dominica is constitutionally due by May 2020.

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of hearing these DLP ministers only talking about the need to be re-elected. They are not asking for a return to Government and showing or talking about what they have done over the past 20 years. All they want is to be re-elected without performance. They have no record to run on and there is no way Dominicans are going to vote these money grabbers back in to office.
This one man party will not get the majority votes of Dominicans anymore. Fool me once shame on you but you will not fool us again.
    Change will come.

Of all the under achieving Pal Reps in Dominica I was not expecting Ian last-Dog to be the one speaking for DLP. After all, the Portsmouth Hospital does not even have a pharmacist currently so we cannot get our medication. The hospital does not even have basic things to treat the simplest maladies, so I think Ian should look under his bed before he put on this performance like a Hollywood actor.
All-in all , I would like all the DLP Pal Reps to show us their report card and explain to us in detail what they have done wit the tax payers money.
Not even Skerro can show his constituency a detailed report of what he has done in his area. Its a shame that these guys are even out there lying in such open air. DLP must go for Dominica to grow.

Ian Douglas what have you and the Dominica Labour Party done for Dominica and the Portsmouth Constituency lately? Certainly, I agree with your statement because the people of Dominica do not demand better of their Government and maybe it is because they do not deserve better! Notice how every other Caribbean island that we used to be ahead of in the 1970s and 1980s have now left us behind for kakarat!

Imagine, Ian Douglas, who has been a monumental failure as an MP is predicting a clean sweep at the next polls. This unbridled confidence is most certainly not based on performance. Therefore, it makes me to conclude that he thinks Dominicans are all sheep-like, hopelessly gullible and dunce. For any ruling political party to change over two-thirds of its incumbent candidates for an upcoming election it speaks volumes about their stewardship. This is unheard of in the Caribbean, probably the world. Only widespread bribery of the electorate and an utterly corrupt electoral system can keep such a destructive and inane group of hoarders in power for this long. Wise up Dominicans, the time of blind party support is over.

Keep dreaming Douglas. Your views expressed doesn’t represent the vast majority of Dominicans who demands change from this incompetent regime. After plunging Dominica into the worst economic stagnation for the past 18 years, coupled with an unemployment rate of 30%, you guys have the audacity to request more time in power?

Really no other country in the Caribbean has done this.

A robust economy creates jobs and helps people to lift themselves out of poverty. How much time does any one of these Ministers spend pontificating about the health of the economy? They spend almost every of their time agonizing about re-election. The people’s economic wellbeing is inconsequential. It’s all about self preservation for them., nothing about the poor and the suffering. They have done enough harm to the people so they have to go.

  16. March 19, 2019

‘Change or Chains’ these are the words of your Dear uncle and my friend. He is clamoring for Change of Governance. We have passed the change of colonial rule it is now chains of corruption, ineptitude and despair. This labour party should go into oblivion for the good of the country.

  17. Braindamage
    March 18, 2019

From day one, we have been suffering in Dominica. Always looking forward for the best and hoping things will change. But never. Money not flowing to find jobs. Majority people who can leave, migrate and those who can’t, make it through back door; to Guadeloupe, St. Martín, Antigua, Marie Galante, etc.
To clear an item at the customs, is an arm and a leg.
Portsmouth used to be the first Trade Town, but things are no more.
Can remember in time of The Hon. Kernel Patrick Rolland John, during the “Back Pay”season to civil servants, mattresses, stove, freeze, etc.. used to kick up on small pickup trucks. Now nada.
The Government of the day is taking advantage of the people by creating poverty on them.

For the next coming General Election, Dominicans should consider competent representatives to run the important affairs of their lives in this country. Don’t let the bribes side track you all.

You are really and truly a show man and a movie star , for you to be speaking this way. You have come to the conclusion that Dominicans are a group of gullible and without memory and brains. After, you and your government allowed Ross to leave Portsmouth, causing poverty, crime and low life culture to rise, you should be a political casualty even before election. The world will be watching Dominicans to find out how smart or the lack thereof they are. But without a doubt , Dominicans are smarter than you guys think. We have produced some good politicians in Portsmouth but I must say Ian has been the worse! Ian is the luckiest politician we have had and if he was a real man Possie would be a transformed and modern town. I an is the first politician that walked straight into Minister and has been one for 15 consecutive years! But what has he done for Portsmouth or Dominica apart from shame, regret, embarrassment? Ian’s father and uncle brought Ross University to Portsmouth and Ian and Reggie Austrie sat their lying to the Portsmouth people while Skerrit and his Bajan friends were working on a deal to ship Ross to Barbados. Oh Ian helped Reggie and Skerrit to bring down Haitians to occupy the vacant apartments but unfortunately landlords are crying. To hear Ian say they going to win and even sweep the poles is just foolishness. Skerrit, Reggie and Ian have destroyed Portsmouth as they caused just about everything to close from banks, restaurants, apartments, super markets, subway and soon…

After reading this article three times I am of the opinion that this man, Ian Douglas ( Hon., LLB) is unaware of the present situation regarding the people’s trend of thoughts on him and the party he represents. UWP has the greatest help they can receive. That is, frustrated Dominicans who want change for themselves and country. These, from all walks of life will silently and unequivocally vote this Labour party out.

If we are honest, we will conclude the the Wealth of the DLP operatives and the poverty of the people are inversely proportional to one another. That is, as the Labour Party operatives become wealthy the wealth of the masses decrease.

If Dominica is to achieve true economic growth to the tune of 3% – 7% yearly, we must have honest hands in the treasury and CBI.

    Kind Regards,

Don`t fall for this incompetent Douglas singing out of tune melody. The Labour party got to know at a review last week that they are going to lose the next election and the UWP will stand tall as the people are going to vote for change for a very decent UWP, leader in Hon Linton and the UWP`s professional team of decent candidates. Let Labour corrupt talk and jump up in no tune but will fall to the ground had and bust up their own devalued assets. Labour party is no longer a credible political party but one of questionable deed, corruption, deception and poor governance.. Labour under failed Skerrit must account to we the people of Domininca for the alleged thievery and on going corrru0tion. Skerrit you have failed, labour corrupt yo have failed. Get lost , Get out, make way for decent politic and goo governance.

    March 18, 2019

I’m totally lost for words. How can someone be so abysmal at their job, having failed the people of Portsmouth and Dominica and so brazenly announce that they are going to sweep the polls.
That is the height of disrespect in my view.
How can one fail to carry out such simple and basics tasks as part of a government for the past 18 years and now talk about confidently winning any seat never mind elections.

This election will be D- DAY for Dominica and the people of this country who are able to vote must seize the moment and steer their country in a totally different direction. As it appears right now, we’re aren’t going in the right direction when one takes into consideration where the other Caribbean islands are, have been and where they are heading.

Dominica seems to be charting some unchartered path to certain uncertainty and no one likes uncertainly. Well actually, the only thing that’s certain is, Dominica needs change, for certain.

Well, Ian whereas you all usually find the resources to bribe people and buy votes, one never can tell: Giving free food and materials to claim build house can certainly brainwash a majority of people into voting the axis of evil into power. However, remember, that Harris Paint left, Ross University School of Medicine left; Colgate Palmolive  left; and when they left you in your backwardness in your village of Portsmouth, where more than half of the people of your village were dependent on Ross are now without a source of income. The Landlords, who made a lucrative living by ripping off the  students in rent will all vote for you because you might have to give them free passport money to pay their bank mortgage.Sometimes hunger and agonizing pain usually cause people to see the error of their ways; perhaps the dire-situation; the existing situation will cause Dominicans to see the country is  suffering, and will take your gifts, and then kick you all to the curb!

These doers of evil for the last nineteen (19) years have turned Dominica into a rundown, decrepit place when it should have been a feast to the eyes. he himself might lose his seat. Our level of Trade is deplorable. His ministry hasnt really taken manufacturing seriously. they depend on DEXIA to drive production and the productive sector but DEXIA itself needs an overhaul. Lets look at the most basic avenue for trade here in Dominica, The Roseau Market. For years it has not upgraded its amenities or set up making it more welcoming and more sanitary for customers to execute basic local trade. Meat is still being sold in the open in non refrigerated areas for flies and other pests to rest upon. Vendors sell fresh produce inches away from the gutters. Paros wonder in and out of the area, they defecate and urinate there whenever they like. I mean come on man. and FYI, the Roseau Market is managed by DEXIA, and DEXIA is under the ministry of Trade of which Ian is the Minister responsible. What about manufacturing? Manufacturers have no proper place to produce. Many cannot upgrade because they have no collateral or security to take loans.
