Belles culvert remedial works

The Belles area was affected by heavy rainfalls recently

The Belles road near the Primary School, experienced culvert failure that necessitated immediate remedial action.

A contract was signed between the Ministry of Public Works and Ports and Caribbean Concrete Ltd for undertaking the works on October 20, 2016 at a cost of EC$1,475,533.15 and comprises the following:
i. A box culvert crossing; and
ii. A retaining wall.

During construction, a section of the remaining road width was compromised through the collapse of the excavated road edge. This rendered the remaining section of road width insufficient to safely accommodate vehicular traffic.

As a result, in the interest of public safety and to expedite the works, the Ministry of Public Works and Ports took the difficult decision to temporarily close the road beyond the Belles Primary School.

To date and after the progress of construction works, it is expected that the road will be reopened to traffic by Monday, December 12, 2016.

We advise that the construction works will not be completed by then and therefore wish to stress that motorists and pedestrians should traverse the road with due care and caution.

Thank you Ministry of Communications of Works for throwing away yet another million dollars plus, to construct a box culvert in that area, that is certain of failure with heavy rains and a river that is sure to crest and over flow its banks at a future date in time.
If we keep enacting and reenacting the same failed engineering solutions, we will undoubtedly receive successful outcomes with our overall infrastructure.
