The Government of Dominica will soon sign close to US$1.2 million contract for the construction of the Boetica Bridge, Minister of Public Works Ian Pinard has announced.

Since the passage of Tropical Storm Erika on August 27th, the two south eastern communities of Delices and Boetica have been cut off from the rest of the island because the Boetica Bridge was washed away and the only access is through a precipice and up a hill side into Boetica.

In fact government has placed focus on restoring access to the two communities.

“The construction of the new bridge, the figures is close to US$1.2 million and we expect the project to be between three to four months,” Pinard revealed. “Very soon we will be signing a contract to do the actual construction of the bridge over the Boetica Gorge, so we are doing all this things and very soon we will see actual work happening at the Boetica area.”

According to him, government is looking at entering an agreement with a contractor and is hoping to sign the contract within the next couple of days.

He indicated that government is continuing works on a bypass at the Boetica Gorge to provide access to the communities.

Excavation works began on September 22.

Pinard pointed out that a zip line is being used to move goods across the gorge for the people of Boetica and Delices. He said the zip line can support weight of at least 400 kg.

The construction of the zip line began on Thursday, September 24.

One thing is for certain – Skeritt has a big surplus of money for the next election. So labor is in for life. I don’t like it! but reality is reality. The opposition is already under water and are not saying a word.

This will end up costing move than 1,2 million U.S, dollars, With cost overruns, this will be one of the most expensive bridge in the Caribbean. So the upside down thinking of this DLP government continues. The people get cheap, substandard petrocasa houses, but they will have a million dollar bridge to walk and drive on, while most will be unemployed

SMH This is what the labor administration should concentrate on, rebuilding bridges and not handing out tablets to school children. How are they going to use them at school if there are no bridges to cross to go to school. Mr. Skirette in the land of he blind the one eye man is really king…Hmmm!.

So where is the tendering why are you people still handpicking who can work in the country? Who verified that the bridge is what is required and we will get value for money. We are tired of seeing these overpriced contracts and the monies are going down some people pockets. If that’s how all-you fellas going to use the state money then people should not contribute to the reconstruction process as it is not transparent.

Is there a secret as to who dat contractor is?
Would it be NSG Technical services Inc.?
I notice they putting up Bailey bridges already.
This is de same company which was ‘supposed’ to de the Roseau and Portsmouth rehabilitation works.
So we set aside de works for de very same company to get de contracts to work after de storm.
i am honestly seeking employment in nation building.
However, i am being pushed aside.
If our reconstruction is put in de control of foreign companies i will gladly pack my bag and leave this country.
Fortunately for me i know de difference between working in my country and in a foreign land.
In these times if my country doesn’t need my effort in nation building i will go help build someone else’s country.

  17. September 28, 2015

Slow down Mr Minister why are you guys always in a hurry to do things vi-ki-vi. Who are the experts who have guaranteed the speedy bridge without first conducting an EIA of the area and what type of bridge is needed (Lives were lost in building the last one remember). For once do something sensible for Man and Country i’m just fed-up of fancy talking.

The “kickback” habit has not been kicked. It still dere, even in times of disaster and reconstruction. Sad but true. So d’oh be surprised if the time being taken is to write-in, beef up, work into budget the payoffs to friends, MPs, Party. Transparency in form of community, public and professional planning is a farce so far. The hurry, the confusion, the vi ki vie is a way of disguising the bad “kickback” habit or another way of seeking new ways to tief.

Now that we have seen so many bridges washed away by TS Erika, are they now going to construct the bridges so that the footings are farther away from the river and high enough to prevent the bridge being impacted by the rising water and debris?

Zandoli i am very confident in our well trained and experience CIVIL ENGINEERS who are charged with this responsibility!!!!!!!! SMDFH!!!!!!

I wonder if you people make similar comments when projects are being administered in your neck of the woods???

  20. Observer
    September 28, 2015

3 to 4 months to construct that bridge sounds extremely ambitious. That’s a lot of money and a critical structure. I would hope that proper planning, including subsurface exploration is performed to ensure that this structure is done right. I understand the urgency, but please give the professionals time to get it right.

    • JOE
      September 30, 2015

Observer your comment gives an impression that there is no ENGINEERS in Dominica, andf that it is ROOSEVELT SKERRIT and his Cabinet Ministers that is executing the project…….

Is that what you meant to imply???
