The York Valley Bridge, also known as the Gleau Chaud Bridge, was washed away in 2011

An implementation contract for the construction of the York Valley Bridge has been signed between the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China.

In 2011, when the York Valley Bridge was washed away, Government responded immediately to restore a section of the bridge.

This cost over $250,000.

The People’s Republic of China later made a promise to construct a two-lane bridge in the York Valley area.

The Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit expressed appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for its continued support to the economic and social development of Dominica.

“Over the last 12 years, China has been a steadfast partner and ally to Dominica and our economic development. We have provided opportunities for literally hundreds of Dominicans to pursue various courses of training and degree programmes. Those trainings have become very meaningful and beneficial to the Dominican population- the private and public sectors.

“As a matter of fact, several Dominicans will be travelling to China in the next few days for [training] in various areas.” He listed, “taxation, agriculture, commerce. They will be exposed to very important and advanced areas which will no doubt assist us to address a number of our challenges within the Dominica economy and society.”

The Government of Dominica will receive funding for the bridge in the form of a grant.

Wang Quan Hau, First Secretary at the Chinese Embassy responded in Chinese saying, “If you want to get rich, roads and a bridge must be built first.”

He continued, “Dominica has many beautiful mountains and rivers so the construction of roads and a bridge is a base for economic and social development.”

Hon Parliamentary Representative for the St. Joseph Constituency which includes York Valley, Kelver Darroux conveyed his gratitude to China for the project.

He sees this as the first step towards transforming the Layou Valley.

“This bridge is very important for the area since it serves the farmers as well as the tourism sector and residents of Layou Park. I want to say a very profound thank you to the Chinese Government for its commitment to us here in Dominica and for fulfilling its promise. I believe that this bridge is a step in the right direction of the forward movement of the Layou valley area.”

The contract signing took place on Friday, May 6th

But, but, but! Here we are talking about a bridge, the remains of what I am viewing is a death trap, even if it is not accommodating vehicular traffic no one should walk on something like that without protective side rails for support, preventing one from falling over the edge!

Talking about cost of two hundred fifty thousand dollars is total rubbish, what you pay for is what you get. No wonder Skerrit has given the contract to his Barbadian friends to build the bridge in Roseau.

Because if what is in the picture is an example of the skills of the Dominica civil, and building engineers, Skerrit do have a right to worry, and bring in outsiders to do it right.

And by the way you that Mountain Chicken Crapo mentality, Sly Eye Indian doctor of nothing, you that , Roosevelt Skerrit, do not believe because of my halfway supportive comment that I am on your side, nor intends to return on your side, I have no intentions of doing that. You have proved yourself to be nothing than an incompetent destroyer of Dominica, and it people. If I do return on your side, I will be a traitor to my country, committing treason against myself, therefore I should be put in front of a firing squad and shot oui!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I have looked at the damage under this bridge and it should be closed .The main beams have been damaged by Erica and are no longer supporting the concrete .At least there should be a restriction of weight posted .The faded out post says 17 tons at least that should be revised

Well, well, well, on a more, very serious note, while the Communist Regime in China is stepping up its aggression and persecution of Christians; severely restricting their rights and freedom to believe and worship as they wish, the Government of Dominica moves steadfast in aligning and entrenching itself with the Government of China as its closest and staunchest ally. How then can this Government of a Country that considers itself Christian defend the rights of fellow Christians around the world? A Government that openly supports Maduro’s asphyxiating squeeze on the People of Venezuela by solidarity and lack of condemnation and is seriously dependent on Communist China says a whole lot about our Country’s moral principles and political leanings. Will you befriend a man who is beating your sister because he is willing to give you gifts and money? Dominicans be real with yourselves and realize that true Christianity in Dominica no longer exists! We’ve sold our souls for money!

a lot of you all people write comments with no suggestion on what the government should do or what can be done, my advice to you is first find the reason that the Chinese are persecuting your socalled Christians, and note not everyone who says they are Christians are Christians, some are Christians in church when they step out of that building they are no longer Christians, the bible ones that in those days as the ones we now live, the anti Christ will deceive many by proposing to be the Christ,so meditate on that while you researching china

First and foremost, this honorary Doctorate business is absolutely hilarious. Now, even reputable media houses are using the sarcastic “Doctor” title which I have been writing for a number of years now! Let me take it a step further by providing this link…and soon Dominicans will be saying Doctor Kermit:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/universityeducation/8855284/Surprising-honorary-degree-recipients.html?image=3
Dominicans, for heaven’s sake an Honorary Doctorate was bestowed on the puppet “Kermit the Frog” of Sesame Street and here in Dominica we had a massive celebration for the same! Are we crazy? Or downright backwards? Why do we endeavor to make the rest of the World laugh at us? Well, go to the link and, in good spirit, laugh at yourself!

Thanks China. DNO, you should know better and not write in your piece, the DR Roosevelt Skerritt. It should be “The Honourable Prime Minister, Mr Roosevelt Skerritt.” I have nothing against the PM, but let us teach our people properly. I suggest that you ask someone who knows about the Honourary Doctorate, to write a piece on DNO to educate the people. The media educates the people. Common editor, SMA boys know better.

ADMIN: It’s a news item from GIS published as it was submitted.

Nothing to do with DNO…they are just publishing a GIS release.

While an honorary degree is one that is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived the usual requirements, such as matriculation, residence, study and the passing of examinations. academic protocol typically requires that only persons who have actually earned an academic doctoral degree (operative word is earned) are supposed to call themselves Doctor…not the same for an honorary degree conferred on someone for recognition of their work in society.

Oh God, they have started to call Skerrit “Dr.” I knew it was just a matter of time.

With the gift of $50,000 (correct me if I am wrong), he could have gotten a better deal from another degree mill. I am sure a quick Google search would give him a list of universities offering PhDs. for less than $1000.

All Dominicans, let us all become and seem important like our PM with a fancy title and buy a Phd for the cheap price of US$370 from here: http://www.expressuniversitydegree.com/honorary-phd-degree/

I did a quick Google search and found President Obama has 5 honorary degrees and I have NEVER heard him being referred to as Dr. Obama.

What does that tell you about this man Skerrit?

This man is an embarrassment to Dominica.

Whilst we applaud the number of much needed initiatives taking place, with regards to the country’s infrastructure, the residents of Bath Estate/Elmshall are still attempting to contact persons responsible for this part of the constituency, to discuss how are they going forward to repair/replace the Bath Estate/Elmshall Bridge, the adjoining roads and most importantly the debris which damaged/blocked people’s residences from the river, from TS Erika. The residents, and in particular, the school children have challenges but no one appears to be paying attention. Absolutely nothing has been done. Can someone please respond to the residents? They require some assistance. Thanks.

I thank you for this comment. I was just about to ask if our community has been forgotten as no one seems to be making any effort to assists us. I hear countless contracts being signed but Elmshall is never on any list. Our so called bridge is gone and our so called road is in urgent need of repairs. I do hope that some one will remember us soon and try to assist.
