Contracts signed for road works in Canefield

The contracts were signed on Wednesday

Member of Parliament for the Mahaut Constituency, Rayburn Blackmoore, in collaboration with local contractors and the Canefield Urban Council, has signed five contracts for road rehabilitation.

The works will take place in Canefield East and the RBC Housing Scheme.

The contracts were signed on Wednesday, June 14th and the projects are worth $774,612.50.

The Canefield East has been sectioned off into three segments with segments one, two, and three receiving $231,807.50, $124,140.00, and $62,220.00 respectively. The RBC Housing Scheme Road will cost $352,445.00 for enhancement.

Blackmoore described the contract signing as “very important” because it “dispels the myth” that only Massacre and Mahaut receive attention.

“That is so untrue and persons, sometimes, see what they want to see and also hear what they want to hear. I am saying this because, notwithstanding of what you may do, you are always going to find persons saying something different, and there is nothing wrong with that, but these are things that we have to know and appreciate,” Blackmoore said.

He added that those who are in “higher positions in the social space” do not understand the needs of the poor, and so, when these needs are satisfied, the highly positioned persons do not see the effort as important.

In light of this, Blackmoore has stated that after all the road projects in Canfield are completed, the village will look like a “real urban area,” and the council must take responsibility for upkeep when that vision becomes a reality. He noted that this must be done in unison with him, the MP.

Blackmoore also spoke about the garbage issue saying he is doing “everything possible” address the situation but residents must play their part.

“We cannot talk about clean and green, and we are throwing our garbage all over the place. Our refuse management is our responsibility. So when we go and we put our refuse by the road, knowing that the truck has passed already, it is a reflection not on Skerrit, the Prime Minister or the Pal Rep, but on you. But, as your humble servant, I will play my part,” Blackmoore remarked.

Five local contractors have been engaged to complete these projects. They are Shane Alexander, Kernel Simon, Asquith Bannis, Stalyn Anthony, and Richard Alexander.

First, sign a contract to repaint that wall behind you all. Im assuming it is at the urban council office. I am sure the council gets a stipend for upkeep of the facility. If not host an event or two and make funds to have the place looking decent. an old plastic for the table cloth. what happen canefield doesnt have class anymore? Blackmore you look like you couldnt be bothered in the picture, but fix them roads properly please with drainage and possible side walks.

The Parliamentary Representative is correct about our attitude towards garbage disposal. This is a cultural issue. When you examine the clothing attire of the sanitation employees in Dominica, it tells you the entire story. We need to first respect our sanitation employees, provide them with proper work equipment and begin a public awareness campaign from pre-schools on up. Our attitude must change, before we see the improvement that we desire.

Anonymous – take it easy Rome wasn’t built in a day, is one at a time.
All I want to say is co-operate with the people on these projects, let them do their work and stop complaining about the time it is being done because all along you were criticizing the road condition so now work with it, when they are directing the traffic just go with the flow. Some of us are too stubborn, we want development but never wants to face the problems associated with it. At the end of the program, we all have to profit from it whether we are Blue, Red, Green or a combination of the three. Let’s all work together for a brighter future and a better Dominica. Can I get an Amen? Love my country

Let me ask a question, which is,how much supervision is there and is being given to all these road works across the country. Are the citizens getting the best for the scarce money being spent on fixing roads.Since when did Dominica have as many engineers to be able to properly supervise these many local contractors.

Since their Labour Party government sent them to university so they could come back and do the work! That you vex about?

I simply asked a question. You are the one who is vexed

Let me put another twist on it, since your Labor Party has trained so many engineers what is preventing some of them from becoming entrepreneurs and helping to transform the economy and the country. It it a failure of their education experience,is it a failure of the economy,is it a failure of the government to provide the necessary enabling environment so they can put their expertise to work instead of waiting on the government for jobs? Here is Philadelphia some graduates from Temple University have gone on to be creative and set up companies which make billions of dollars in different fields like medicine, construction, technology, finance, engineering etc. so what is lacking in Dominica with all the engineers your Labour Party has trained.?Just asking a question since you seem satisfied that getting a degree is the beginning and end of process or work for the government.Where is the next level?

Not only the supervision, but the design and planning.

Again, I cite Antrim as a case in point. We move from one blunder to another.

The ruling party has been in power for almost 20 years. How many projects of this magnitude have happened in the Canefield within your reign previously? How many have happened on Massacre and Mahaut?

It is no myth. Canefield was not cared for like the other villages in the consistency; the Canefield Urban Council should face the majority of the blame for this.

However, I am very happy to see that progress in being man in our community and that the MP is doing his best to make a change.

Pissed off Canefield Housing Scheme Resident:

This is my beef with these people there.Everything is Canefield East, RBC, etc but what about the ORIGINAL HOUSING SCHEME? What is being done for that area, my area..So long the area looking for a facelift not one has been given..It’s a shame to see I left Canefield as a young child for over 10 yrs, moved back to see the area in the same state I left it..Before there was East and RBC these places was our guava bush and playground, eh TODAY all you leaving it behind to cani just to fix up the others!! Hope all you will NEVERRRR step foot in CANEFIELD HOUSING SCHEME eh!!! Pissed off much..

Since 2 weeks before Christmas I was promised the Council would come and take the old stuff from my yard and clean it up, but to date that has NOT materialized and yes, I know that they were without a truck for sometimes..I don’t want to hear any excuses whatsoever!!!

Some good development has been happening in your constituency over the past few months. This goes to show, that you as parl rep, are doing your best to alleviate the peoples’ plights and enhance the communities they live in. Remain committed, we are grateful for the progressive movement.

Agreed. Just recently we saw some roads being completed at Warner and Campbell. The government doing tremendous work on the road networks island-wide and they deserve the commendation.
