PM Skerrit addressing the function on Wednesday evening

A delegation from China is now in Dominica discussing the final drawings for the new Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), according to prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Speaking at a reception observing the 64th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday evening the prime minister said the delegation is one of two on the island discussing developmental projects.

Skerrit stated that he has seen the draft designs of the new PMH and “and so far I am very, very satisfied with what has been presented to us.”

“This is going to be a magnificent facility for the people of the Dominica which will aid in the delivery and the improvement of the delivery of health care services for our people,” he stated.

When completed, he said, the new hospital will be the most modern and advanced hosptial “we have in the OECS and maybe the Caribbean.”

The other delegation, according to the prime minister, is in Dominica doing preparatory work for the commencement of a new primary school in Newtown.

“This is a grant from the government of China to the people of Dominica in the furtherance and advancement of education for our children,” he stated.

Skerrit emphasized that the forging of relations between China and Dominica was the “best decision in the interest of Dominica.”

“It was a progressive decision and it was a decision based on a vision for the Commonwealth of Dominica,” he noted. “And everyone can agree that this relationship has been mutually beneficial to China and Dominica.”

He also reiterated Dominica’s position on the One China Policy, describing it as “the basis for our relationship.”

In his speech, Ambassador Wang Zonglai, stressed that China is committed to help countries to achieve common development and prosperity.

He said during the nearly 10 years since Dominica and China established diplomatic relations, there have been sound cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, as well as international affairs.

“Based on the good cooperation that already exists between our countries we can further explore potentials in bilateral relations and take it to the next level,” Ambassador Wang said.

It’s called prioritizing. You don’t go building your pool before you build your house. So why should you build a luxury state house and then build a hospital? What happens if you invite a dignitary to your island and they’re a guest of your state house, but then they suddenly fall ill? Then you have to fly them out to get treatment. Nonsense.
This administration, more than any other, has put a lot of focus on tourism. I remember not too many years ago when some tourists had an accident coming down Castle Comfort hill. The scene at the hospital was embarrassing. I know the hospital staff did their best and I applaud their efforts and abilities accomplishing what they did with the resources at hand, but if they worked in a state of the art hospital with sufficient rooms and tools, it always hits me what kind of performance they would have delivered.
We need to focus on what’s right for the people of this country. When we stop focusing on the flash and look at the pictures we will see the truth.

It is in China’s best interest if Skerritt wins. Therefore, they the Chines are looking in their best interest. Soon we’ll have help from Morroco, Cuba, Iran, Syria, South America, just to name a few. All that’s taking place right now is to fool the fools. But we are not all fools. Labor could labor as hard as they possibly could; THEY MUST GO. Dominica needs are too great to have a man that’s too big for himself and the people.

Ah, another state of the art! Well we do deserve it! Just think how many lives could have been saved if we had it 5 years ago, or perhaps before the stadium. Anyway, moving on..hope they cater for the actual operations by budgeting for the appropriate specialists, training the technicians (and being able to employ new ones as needed) in operating the new equipment, having the pre-requisite spares and medical stores so that we dont just have a fancy building but one that can deliver premium service. Having better customer service attitudes and better paid nursing staff so we can improve their morale as well. Don’t forget the ambulances. Lord knows our firemen try hard, but we cannot continue to just have meat wagons bringing in persons whose life don’t get saved on the way.. lets also train folks to be paramedics and also have the appropriate equipment in the ambulances..We must be more strategic, big picture thinking than that!..Basically having money and the foresight, and service delivery to run the institution in a brand new way!

I would really love to know why we cannot have two hospitals. Why not just build a new one and keep the current one? Since they’re funding it, it’d be amazing if all the doctors and nurses studying abroad could have a new hospital to come home to. Also, why should we only have one hospital? Can we not have another in a different location? Possibly make it easier for people injured further away to get medical assistance? That would create jobs and enhance our medical capabilities at the same time. Just saying

    ….just thinking out loud…….

We do need a better equipped and staffed hospital. We need ambulances that have life saving personnel and equipment on board. But…..what is the true motive of China building a new hospital in Dominica? Maybe, just maybe, the Chinese want to have a better healthcare system in place for their citizens who are rapidly populating Dominica? They already control our commerce, our economy, our treasury, our Government………our people!!!!

    Just thinking out loud……

I pray for my island and its people.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well I don’t vote in DA and I won’t vote there. I just want to know that once I visit my homeland and if I get sick then I want good care before I return to NYC. So if China build us a modern hospital then that’s good and I hope we will have properly trained personnel to work in and to maintain the hospital.

  20. September 26, 2013

Mr.Skerit without proper equipements and professional doctors the new hospital will be useless,we need a hospital so that who needs immediate treatment would not necessarily airlift to our neighboring islands .

I hope the PM and China has not dictated what the new PMH should have and look like. It is my best guess that the all knowing PM have consulted with the medical proffessionals on the island and in the ministery of health to build a facility that will best serve the needs of Dominicans effectively. Seems like we build and select people first boast and brag then we figure out stuff nah work or does not meet criteria, or is unsustainable.

At one point I thought my fellow Dominicans were wise – but this notion couldn’t be further from the truth. Their Country is going down hill while they themselves are in Limbo. Who drugged them?

    • September 26, 2013

      Lang Zor.

Hello you said “My fellow Dominicans” but in the same paragraph you said “Their Country”. So why can’t it be our Country. We are making progress even though its slow and no one is drugging our people. The majority of our citizens don’t used drugs. Anyway what is your view about the new hospital .

      • Lang Zor
        September 26, 2013

The new Hospital just ahead of the election? Let me tell you what I think. It’s just a political move by the skerritt administration. China is in dire need of medical facilities for its own people. They are short of nursing homes for their elderly citizens. Check it out for yourself. Now, why would they neglect the needs of their own people and come down to our Country to provide for us the same necessities their people are so in need of? Does that make any sense to you? Is’nt there something shady about that? Don’t forget also, China is not doing us any favors – as some are made to believe. They have a plan – and we will regret we ever joined hands with these people. Correction: We didn’t join hands with them. Our so called “leaders” did. Do I know you? I thinks so. When this new hospital, or hospital addition in built, be careful standing in the terrace – the Chines are known to build everything cheap just like the stuff sold in those 99 cents stores.

  24. Jimi Hendrix
    September 26, 2013

Mr. PM, with all due respect, the building is just one component of a good hospital. After the structure is erected comes the task of delivering good medical care to the people. That is a much more difficult undertaking than brick and mortar.

    • Concerned
      September 26, 2013

They stated that “everyone can agree that this relationship has been mutually beneficial to China and Dominica.” But I have not seen or heard any of these benefits which China is recieveing from assisting Dominica? the question that should be asked is: what does china expect to gain from this endeavor?

why don’t people realize that they’re not doing this for dominica solely out of the goodness of their hearts? this is designed to further indebt the country to china–how much more autonomy will dominicans lose while others become the new ruling class?
