Dominica Fisheries Division emerges second place in UN Public Sevice Awards for Latin America and Caribbean

Staff of Dominica Fisheries Division

The United Nations Public Administration Network, (UNPAN) organises activities to commemorate United Nations Public Service Day which is celebrated on 23rd June annually.  One of the awards during this event is The United Nations Public Service Awards.

According to the UNPAN website this is “the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide.  Through an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes the role, professionalism and visibility
of public service. “

The award recognises Divisions of Government in various initiatives.  This award is granted in one of the following categories:

•    Advancing knowledge management in government
•    Fostering participation in policy-making decisions through innovative mechanisms
•    Improving the delivery of services
•    Preventing and combating corruption in the public service
•    Promoting gender-responsive delivery of public services

The Establishment Personnel and Training Department (EPTD), as part of its mandate to promote and motivate a highly productive Public Service, arranges for the observance of a National Public Service Day biennially.  At the awards ceremony held on December 3, 2010, Fisheries Officer Mr. Derrick Theophille won the Public Officer of the Year Award.

In recognition of the Fisheries Division exceptional teamwork and innovation, the EPTD with the assistance of the Caribbean Centre for Administration Development (CARICAD) nominated the Fisheries Division as a team of hard working Public Officers for the prestigious UN award.  The nomination was submitted under the category, “Advancing knowledge management in government.”

The Establishment Personnel and Training Department is today elated, and proud to announce that the Fisheries Division has emerged second place winner for this award, in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The award was granted due to the initiative embarked upon by the Division in updating of its existing databases, and modernization of its management practices with the involvement of multiple stakeholders.  Statistical databases were updated, rebuilt and in some cases newly created.

This addressed some of the problems encountered with fisheries and the marine environment statistics, monitoring, evaluation and with the safety and empowerment (through training) of the fisher communities in Dominica and in the region.  The approach taken by the Fisheries Division contributes significantly to marine environment enhancement, thereby improving the socio-economic status of the fishing communities.

This year, thirty-six public sector organizations will be awarded with this most prestigious recognition of excellence in public service on 23rd June 2011, during the United Nations Public Service Day awards ceremony to be held in Tanzania.   The United Nation Public Service Awards, rewards the creative achievements  and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide.

Great Job Guys! I am sure you all must be feeling proud! Hard work really pays off!

However, I believe that a professional team photo is required.

It would be necessary for the newspapers and other regional and international website. Grateful if my advice would be taken into consideration.

This is international proof of the quality of work that we produce in the publc service. We public officers are not honoured in our homeland, we are fully criticized, however the UNITED NATIONS has recognised our worth. To the fisheries division and the establishment department, congratulations. To other fellow public officers continue to strive to excel nothwithstanding the challenges.

congrats to fisheries for a job well done. I am really proud.
However anonymous I must tell u that there are very productive departments in the public service like fisheries and there are others where the workers get nothing done, so i do not necessarily think we should say the same for the entire service. How ever we can ask others to take fisheries as an example and try to achieve the same
