Dominica leads in small island clean energy race – UN

Street in Roseau, capital of Dominica

They seldom meet on the cricket or football fields, but the world’s small island developing states are informally competing with each other to be the first to ditch fossil fuels and embrace clean energy.

A new United Nations analysis of the most recent energy plans of 52 low lying poor countries – traditionally heavily dependent on imports of petrol and oil – shows the Caribbean island of Dominica leading the world with plans to become carbon “negative” by 2020. The Maldives is not far behind, hoping to be carbon neutral by 2020. Tuvalu and the Cook islands intend to generate all their electricity from renewables by 2020 and Timor-Leste, the poorest country in Asia, expects to provide solar electricity to all its 100,000 families by 2030.

Why cant we go green on our own. To me going green doesn’t mean to not use fossil fuels. We’re going to need fossil fuels for lubricants, plastics etc. Make no mistake that we’ll see these disappear overnight or in 6 yrs. We have geothermal energy that can be tapped, we have hydroelectricity in Dominica that could be made more efficient. We’re talking about roughly energy needs for 75000 people. We should be able to accomplish some sort of naturally conservative lifestyle in a short space of time. But the island has a long way to go. Stop cutting down tries around the rivers and water catchment areas, its destroying the rivers.

Stop dumping those old cars on the road side. Planning needs to do their part to at least do a better job of city planning, so that future roadworks and development doesnt take such a drastic tole on established settlement. People get serious.

Dominica is a special place, ive seen nothing like it anywhere else.

dominicans can make you laugh if is one thing eh. all the people commenting probably laughed when ron green forwarded a ‘green budget’ and probably even ridiculed him now some of the same ones are singing the tune he was singing. thats why we dont progress as a nation cause we are more worried about the messenger than the message. ironical even that we intend to be carbon negative when this government has made significant investment into the petroleum industry with the advent of petro-caraibe. typical dominican as well to do one thing and say another(as indicated in the article this is not actual on the ground happenings but projected plans of the future)there have been so many plans and so many consultants in dca however the translation of these beautiful ideas into reality is sadly lacking.

Thanks to Crispin Gregoire for championing the cause of geothermal and getting this all on the front burner.

Its a pity that if and when the geothermal comes into fruition it will be owned by foreigners with dominica entitle to only 5% of royalties.

You people that think that this is article is a positive slant on DA don’t know anything about it. You are just looking for anything positive said about DA and there is nothing wrong with that but……
Do you understand what this is really about??
Do you understand that there is nothing wrong with carbon dioxide which is necessary for plants to live and thrive?
It is about making you dirt poor and slaves. No electricity, no fuel for your vehicles, no modern conveniences, no hospital, no jobs. Is that what you call progress at the expense of the Green Agenda being put forth by the UN under the guise of carbon emissions? They are brainwashing the kids in school with this stuff and telling the kids that the environment is more important than they are.
Try being driven back to the year 1800 and how living was in those days. Get those donkeys back, because you will need them. But wait….they emit carbon in their droppings…..so they are not good….and neither are you according to the elite (who are deranged and mentally ill). You, the people are a blight to the planet that must be eliminated. Think about that before you buy into what the UN is selling. It is selling your annihilation as well as that of your children. This isn’t about off-grid solar living folks. It is just packaged in a way to deceive you. You don’t even own most of your natural resources in DA anymore….the UN does. Look at your UNESCO signs island wide as an example. Time to wake up.

I note that the rating or assessment is based on PLANS not actions. We here in Dominica need to go beyond plans and talk and get busy with building a resilient and sustainable economy where geothermal energy is a significant sector of the economy and where recycling is a business and sustained and well-paying jobs are created.

Way to go Dominica. Let us lead the world in positive things. We are just too blessed with natural resources to do otherwise.

    Big up Dominica….
