Dominica observes OECS day

(DNO) Dominica observed Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) day Monday and minister for education Petter St. Jean ceased the opportunity to tell Dominica to take the lead in ensuring the sustainability of the OECS.

St. Jean said the OECS, established in 1981, with the signing of the Treaty of Basseterre, has made significant contributions to the well being of citizens of the sub grouping.

“I call upon us to take the lead in ensuring that the OECS story continues to be the success that it has been. Let us therefore work together to make our region a better place for future generations,” he said.

Friday 18th June will mark the 29th anniversary of the OECS, and is also the day when leaders of the grouping meet in St. Lucia to sign the OECS economic union treaty.

“We in the caribbean and more so in the OECS region, are fortunate, to be part of a group that can actively work together to make the eastern caribbean a more prosperous, stable and a peaceful community,” St.jean said, endorsing the agreement.

“In signing the treaty our leaders will for example be discussing issues related to our country’s economy: agriculture, trade, tourism and law and order,” he added.
