Dominica secures geothermal funds

Special equipment being shipped to Dominica from Iceland for geothermal drilling

Funds have been approved for Dominica to further explore its geothermal potential.

That is according to Dominica’s UN Ambassador Vince Henderson.

He told an interview with the media on Friday that he has been elected as the Chairman of a new facility created to undertake renewable energy and energy efficiency projects throughout the Alliance of Small Island States.

Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) is an intergovernmental organization of low-lying coastal and small Island countries. Established in 1990, the main purpose of the alliance is to consolidate the voices of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to address global warming.

“Presently the biggest thing for us is our role in the climate change debate. We continue to play a very important role together with the Alliance of Small Island States and we will be participating in the climate change conference in Durban. I have been elected as the chairman of a facility which is created to undertake renewable energy and energy efficiency projects throughout the island states. As the chairman we have been able to do a lot of work on behalf of small island states. At the end of this month, we will soon be signing two agreements, one with the PRC for about $10-million and also with the government of Japan where will be signing another $15-million facility which will benefit small island states,” he said.

Meantime Henderson said the government of Denmark has set aside $17-million for renewable energy and  Dominica is expected to receive an initial contribution of US$250,000 which will go towards the geothermal project.

“We are hoping that we will be able to mobilize our resources in developing renewable energy and energy efficiency in the country,” he said.

Excellent job and congratulations to His Excellency on his chairmanship.

If I recall (and I may be wrong) we recently granted geothermal licenses to a French company. What are the implications of this new development on the previous license – if any?

Where are the conservationists? where is Athie Martin, Ron Green, Bernard Wiltshire and their satellites. For years they have pushed an alternative energy policy for Dominica. Nothing happened. Now that soemthing very big is happening they are deafeningly silent.

By the way has Athie Martin explained to the country what has happened to his Bulk Water Project? When will engineering works start? I amsure there are good reasons why the project has not started – money, planning approval delay, private land owners, rerouting of pipes, Skerrit’s corrupt attitude. However the more fundamental reason has to do with Athie’s ability to talk, talk and talk and talk more with nothing to show. Absolutley a hopeless bag when comes to putting hisideas inot practice. A total and absolute basket case when coems to implementing all of his ideas. Athie prove me wrong Athie one of these days.

I take your point about Athie’s project and the lack of information but how does this tie in with the topic at hand? and by the way do you know the status us the geothermal contract which was awarded by the gov’t.

Now, i do not see anything there is to shout about as it relates ti Vince. The body was formed in 1990 and has been working ever since, so it is very unlikely that the agreements reached were as a result of anything which he did. I know you people are looking for good things to praise your gods for in this otherwise disappointed situation but please do so only when they have infact done something worthy of praise.

In Jesus’s name i bring all the works before you allmight father! Guide them lord under your wings! Often time the innocent get hurt and the honest and loving fathers and mothers are killed…But lord i ask through your son Jesus Christ, and your mercy, to be with them! Amen and amen!

This move to geothermal energy is the single most important development since independence. If we can get this right and the drill wells are successful this will be a turning point for Dominica.
