Eighty three persons from the Kalinago Territory are currently taking part in a six-week training program dubbed the, “Skilled Development Program.”

It is being hosted by an organization called, L.E.A.D Kalinago in collaboration with the Kalinago Council.

It is being sponsored by UNESCO.

Main organizer of the program, Claudius Sanford, told Dominica News Online that the program covers six areas: sewing, culinary arts, organic vegetable production, self-development, child development psychology and small business development.

The program began with the sewing component, which ran from June 29 to July 3.

This will be followed by Culinary Arts training from July 6 to July 10.

From July 13 to 17 participants will be trained in organic vegetable production

Training in self-development will take place from July 20 to 24, followed by Child Development Psychology from July 27 to August 1.

The final stretch of the program will take place from August 4 to 8 with training in small business development.

Sanford said he is satisfied the program has been moving along rather well.

“We are happy to have this,” he stated. “We are indeed very happy, the program is rolling smoothly.”

He said he is impressed with the attendance and the enthusiasm of the participants.

“Yesterday I went into the sewing session and the ladies are excited, quite a number of them were present and I am very happy about it,” Sanford stated.

He is of the view that the program is “a timely venture” and it will help participants to, “develop their small business ideas.”

“You cannot open a restaurant without a level of skill,” Sanford remarked.

The official opening ceremony for the program was held on Monday in the Kalinago Territory.
