EU to fund research on Dominica geothermal link to French islands

Geothermal activity in Dominica

The European Investment Bank has agreed to provide a $1.1 million grant to enhance planning and study the feasibility of exporting geothermal electricity from Dominica to Martinique and Guadeloupe.

The bank, which is the European Union’s long-term lending institution, will look at possible links from Dominica to Guadeloupe to the north and from Dominica to Martinique in the south.

“Ensuring the most effective use of geothermal energy as a sustainable source of electricity generation offers immense potential for transforming energy use and economic growth in the Caribbean,” said Plutarchos Sakellaris, European Investment Bank Vice President.

$ means US not Euro and the story said they have agreed to provide it not that we’re asking for it so it’s a done deal. Where’s the negativity coming from?

The Late Elkin Bernard Henry spoke of geothermal enery and wind generated energy.Such has always been there, sad to say we have exploited these resources too late and so we continue to suffer because we simply do not know the value of what we have!!!!!

This would be the most productive project for Dominica and its neighbors to the north and south. It makes good sense for Europe to invest and play a major role to ensure that geothermal energy becomes a reality on the island. The impact of such would be enormous like no other, in regards to the revenue, businesses, and cheap clean energy for the local consumers. Every Dominican should be optimistic and support the project, hoping that it will be a total success. Lougaoo Mem will continue to pray for the success of the project, while he roams the Tete Morne/Bon- Ripo woods.

It is such a pleasure to read every time I sign on, some form of development is occurring. Dominica is blessed with its natural resources and therefore will yield revenue to the country. God bless Dominica.

    Congratulations Mr. Prime Minister.

This sounds interesting…DA has to ensure that it is in control and it enjoys most of the benefits. PM need to inform us of it expectation, cost of investment and the agreement between DA and other parties. PM should look to invest in peoples education as a source of further exploration and management of the whole system e.g engineers, system operatives, IT

I wish DA success in this endeavour.

Most sensible comment yet! While on paper this sounds like an excellent venture, Dominica has to be the biggest beneficiary in the group.

Let me say I am convince the Dominica Government has a good standing on the international market.

To all the people that claim this administration has a negative rating, this is proof that this Admin. has respect on the international stage.

The EU lead by France is not in the game of playing easy with negative or poor Admin. in the world.

I say to the government please do what is good for the Island.

I have not known any 100% pure perfect government anywhere in the world, We all know from time to time there will be mistakes. What is most important is to learn from the mistakes and move ahead.

Your comment is full of animosity and anger. I fore one see more good than bad in this administration and until a better alternative presents itself I will continue supporting them.

        February 4, 2012

Well if you say it’s not going anywhere then your closed mind will give you every reason to believe it’s not. I bet you actually think your over exaggerated negativism is justified.

The truth is that if this can be brought to reality it will be a GREAT boost for Dominica. The people of the zeitgeist movement promote geothermal energy as a major alternative to fossil fuels. Granted they are a bit loony but they have a point.
