Government had made housing a major pillar in Dominica’s development – Austrie

Austrie

Minister for Housing Reginald Austrie has expressed the Government’s delight at the Safer Building Course offered by the Dominica State College and the stakeholders of the housing sector that are set to participate in it.

He also stated that government has made housing development a major pillar in the development of the country.

The Minister was speaking at the course’s launching ceremony when he stated that the Government has been the biggest investor in housing and that the course would serve to assist the Government in protecting that investment.

“[The Government] has made housing development a major pillar to the development of this country and I would like to mention of the Housing Revolution. [It’s] an initiative where we have spent over $60 million during the last three years. And I will say that the Government of Dominica has been the single biggest investor or contributor to the Housing sector. We can boast of this achievement but we have also had some challenges and I believe that this course which you have undertaken will assist us greatly in mitigating or overcoming some of these challenges,” Austrie said.

He also spoke of a housing development that set to come on stream this year in the community of Silver Lake as well as the $27 million State House which he thinks includes a component for urban housing, stating that a site is already being looked at for the housing structures.

Austrie remarked, “We can also speak about the $27 million Chinese money [for] the State House but I think there is a component in there for urban housing and I think that I have already identified the site for the first such building. We’re going to the grounds of the former Lands and Surveys Division up in Bath Estate. It is our hope that work will commence on that very important project in this year.”

He further said that the low-cost housing would assist particular demographics and despite the challenges with the maintenance of such structures that the Government already has in place, he believes that this initiative will bring relief to many burdened by rising rent costs in the urban areas.

“We can boast that government is the biggest investor in housing” – I’m not sure if that is something worth the brag because we all know that the Chavez housing does not stimulate the economy and the 27 million dollar spending goes right back to China when we are footing the bill. The housing revolution is mere propaganda- a housing revolution is suppose to be reflected in the economy and the livelihood of the people. How can we boast of a housing revolution when our trades men during the so cal housing revolution our very good tradesmen ran to Antigua, Anguilla , SM etc. The logic does not jive with the Housing Revolution. A housing revolution is suppose to stimulate growth and jobs and Reginald’s Housing revolution has not.
So now that we build a few little houses for a few party supporters those deserving and those undeserving where are the jobs to at least manage and sustain living in these houses.

Austry remarked, “We can also speak of the $27 million Chinese money for the State House but….”. I really thought that when you get a loan from a financial institution, lender or country, that money belongs to the borrower. Since when the mortgagee still owns the money he lends? No wonder the MOU is kept in secret. Wake-up my people! Soon our little island will belong to this darn ungodly communist country. They are already taking over the merchant/business sector in our city. The time is now to bring a stop to the nonsense. For the records I do not care a rat’s tail about these people.
