The completion of the Grand Fond playing field has been assured with a cash injection of over $100,000 towards that project.

On Monday December 9, 2013, the Government of Dominica presented a cheque of $107,800.00, to the Grand Fond Village Council, which will go towards excavation works, surface dressing, and planting of grass on the playing field.

This is the fourth such disbursement of funds towards the project by Government amounting to over half a million dollars.

Chairperson of the Grand Fond Village Council, Joyce Pascal in accepting the cheque, expressed gratitude to the government for making the money available towards this much needed project.

Pascal described the playing field as a welcome facility for the community.

“The playing field will benefit the entire community. I know for sure our young men in the community are excited about this project. Grand Fond is a sporting community and the people have a passion for sports. I am sure when this playing field is completed it will make a vast difference in the quality of lives of our people,” she noted.

Ferdinand Greenaway, representing “Bakes Block and Construction Company,” is the contractor assigned to the project. He has given a commitment that the playing field will be ready within the next four weeks.

“As you know the playing field is in a poor state right now. We have to first level the field. The material will then be spread evenly on the field. This will be followed by the planting of the grass,” he said. “It will take about three or four months before any game can be played on the field.”

Meanwhile Parliamentary representative for the Grand Fond Constituency, Ivor Stephenson, called on the entire village to take ownership of the playing field.

“I need to call on you the villagers of Grand Fond that I would not just like the contractor and the Ministry of Public works to take up the responsibility for ensuring that the work is done towards putting the playing field into use, I would like every one of us to take responsibility.,” he stated.

Minister responsible for Sports, Justina Charles, said government is sensitive to the sporting needs of communities across the country and Grand Fond is no exception.

“Even when I move through Grand Fond, I see the young people engaged in sports. We know of the results of your engagements in sports at a national and regional level and we understand the importance of a playing facility for you in Grand Fond,” the Minister said.

According to GIS, the Grand Fond Playing field is one of several playing fields receiving financial support from Government across the country.

Marcus Garvey created a back to Africa movement in the early 60/70’s, they bought a boat to make the plan a reality. The people of the area need to create a back to Rosalie movement to transform this area into a centre of excellence for the East. While we must respect the rights of the current landlords, Our grand parents who worked on this estate for centuries have not received one cent so we should start the reparation process right there. If we talking reparation lets start giving access to resources to people to make them productive members of the community. What do you think?

We need a new Rosalie Bridge equipped with walk way and railings the present bridge is too low. Come on we waited so long and over and over the bull dog told us that Millions have been received to do the projects all over Dominica. Hope we understand that an effective opposition will and can make the siting Government and the people do the right thing. My prayer is for a 12/ 11 seat Government at our next General Elections that type of mandate will keep who ever wins their feet to the fire aware that if the same old will not be tolerated we have to vote our conscience not due to fear, and surely not for hand out. The power is in our hands lets show up and vote for our lives depends o it.

JOyce dont need to take that money from sckrrit, all the years we vte for cyrus not nothing we get. all the land they have belong to the grandfond people. our grand parents land.. i think we should reclam it insted of going up that hill to grand fond. we have no land in grandfond for the furture generation all is iin rosaalie belonging to one woman. and guess what it is our land.

      December 12, 2013

why don’t you stop being a workers for the sake of it. To all of you workers who have nothing good to say about the money given to complete the playing field this comes as no surprise. Wouldn’t you just feel better or have one on labor if it wasn’t completed. Election or not the project needed to complete and the commitment was given. You and your instant gratification even you know everything takes time. Thanks PM. Skerrit for continuing to show your respect for the people of this constituency and thanks Hon. Stevenson for your persistence.. you have done well. All I can ask for is a more durable road to complement that in the areas at Rosalie, Vava and Too Cabwit. That would really mean a lot to us.

That piece of land is only being developed into a playing field because of Thomson Fontaine. No doubt about it! He highlighted the fourteen year neglect of the DLP government. And now that he is scaring the DLP, they are now giving attention to the field. Too late, DLP. A new parliamentary representative in the person of Thomson Fontaine will be elected come the next general elections.

      December 12, 2013

You must do you research into why the “acclaimed Dr. Thomson Fontaine” suddenly has a voice to channel the cause for Grand Fond people or Dominica by extension. I know but I will not disclose it here. He knows why…..He wants to become minister of finance eh.. imagine that… hahaha….so much integrity… all you vex about PM Skerrit not about DLP but all you think if guys like Thomson come into power that powere won’t go up in their heads….. do all you research about de Dr. Thompson and all you will see why he is suddenly interested in his country’s development… Zor kay tan.

What did the first three disbursements totalling almost $400,000.00 accomplish? Was some infrastructural work done or was there a ground drainage exercise undertaken? Was a night lighting system installed? What???Because to give $100,000.00 as a fourth disbursement and according to the contractor “As you know the playing field is in a poor state right now. We have to first level the field. The material will then be spread evenly on the field. This will be followed by the planting of the grass” seems like something DID not add up!!

HO!HO HO! thank you! to the Government of the people by the people for this timely gift towards the completion and to remind us we are not the forgotton ones. Patience is virtue and a general Elections around the corner does not hurt either. { man that feels good to say that!} Hope with this cash injection the Grand Fond playing field will be completed at long last, also we are calling on the people to play their part to turn this area not only for sporting events but a place where all can come to enjoy sporting events as in the past sporting events used to be an experience that the young and not so young used to enjoy and such memories must be brought back as we seek to take Grand Fond to the next Level. My hope is full accountability and transparency will be exercised with this gift and in the end we will not have any body being caught with their hands in the cookie jar, Grand Fond people are proud people, hard working people like most other villages in Dominica. For our servants this is not the time to fall asleep at the wheel yes talk about it campaign till the cows come home, but also remember Government by the people, for the people and the power lies with the people so thank you very much” and by the way. “Do Not Forgot the Petite Soufiere to Rosalie Road”.

This playing field in Grand Fond is a bottomless pit. Imagine close to one million dollars have been spent on a playing field in fourteen years and it still not looking like it will be completed.
Ivor Stephenson how can the people take ownership of the playing field when a Contractor is paid to do the job?
It appears that the days of Self-Help are over. I am convinced that if the people were involved this playing field would have been long completed and Wayne Phillip would have been the West Indies wicket keeper.

I distinctly remember a certain member of UWP in Pottersville saying for about 5 mins (maybe was more, I never hear a man talk about playing fields so much before) they (this administration) don’t like playing fields..

all of a sudden ‘According to GIS, the Grand Fond Playing field is one of several playing fields receiving financial support from Government across the country.

well done PM!! In the words of many labourites ‘keep up the good work’!

I do not totally agree with you, people have to have some real experience to understand most undertakings and coupled with young or mature it depends on the person how sensitive one feels towards building other peoples lives and how restraint one is from deeping their hand in the cookie jar, we heard of bin bobol, cottages at savanne pye, land transfer deals, just to name a few, and going back to the point the man started really young
