Housing development for Marigot

Housing Minister Reginald Austrie

A housing development project has been earmarked for the Marigot Constituency in 2013, Housing Minister Reginald Austrie has announced.

Austrie said government is concerned about the housing needs of Marigot residents and will seek to move forward in bringing relief to the people of the area.

He said take actions will be taken this year on the allocation of land for the housing development.

“Our surveyors have gone in there, done the proper subdivisions. We have to move some houses, do the road infrastructure. A document will be presented to Cabinet shortly to take a decision as to how we move with the allocation with those lands in the Marigot area,” Austrie said.

He pointed out that housing development project in close proximity to the Melville Hall airport initiated by the former United Workers Party Government several years ago was unsuccessful.

“If you can recall the United workers Party was about to build these steel frame buildings that were not suitable for the area for obvious reasons. As a matter of fact if one goes there now you will not see one piece of steel standing because all has been eaten away by the sea salt and the nature of the area,” he stated.

“Squatters have since moved in there,” the Minister noted.

He said the project is one of several earmarked for the Marigot constituency in the New Year.

Yea they have money to suddenly build houses but they cannot fix the roads for the farmers and pay Fenton Telemaque his money for his land at the value it is worth want to give the man doggy scrap. Oh i see that is why they were trying to throw out the people at camp Melville Hall to take the same land they giving UWP quass for to build housing scheme and what kind of house they going to put there must be mud and sand cause it is only mud and sand that can with stand the sea breeze and salt without rotting. Those people does get me sick how comes they can do everything political when the students of the DSC need finicial aid and they have to ask you all kind of things to give 10 cents, poor those nursing stundents not getting a dime and have to work for free but then they talking about educating the students for Dominica future, hypocrits only when election around the corner they running up. Just look at the belles road in time for election it finishing, i never see road take years to build

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Marigot needs a face lift especially around the airport. The fishery complex by the bay is more or less defaced by all crap around it. Get on Mr Austrie with the development

U mean the surveyors subdivided the properties already but u can’t even say WHERE in Marigot the houses will be built. What u holding back info for. Or is that u start campaigning and ridiculing de UWP at the same time.

U don’t even know where u putting de development. I find all u campaigning early. After election Mr Baptiste was talking of housing development in de Haitian village @ Melville Hall. So close to de airport that would surely create an impression on de minds of our visitors.

All u looking for votes man.

Even if de impossible would happen for DLP to get 21 seats they will still say de country too divided.

    Hahahahahaha

A housing development project earmarked for any village or community ought to be a good thing. It shouldn’t matter whether it is for Sams Gutter or it is announced by the Gutter Minister in a tone that exposes the realy intention behind the project in Marigot. After all, Marigot is part of Dominica, albeit it has a population of very bright people who will not be unduly influenced by politically motivated gimmicks.

I shake my head, I hold my head down in shame to see what my people have become, to see how they have been blinded by party politics. How does a housing project for a community and a people in need draw so much negative criticism over party color? Had the criticisms address logistical issues re the development I could have understood but when all it does is to seek to deprive Marigot people of adequate housing because some of us don’t support the government or because the Marigot constituency belongs to the UWP, I say shame on the critics.

I have no issue with people supporting their party or being anti Skerrit, Reggie and labour, that is your democratic right. But my fellow Dominicans lets put country before party and political colors when our development is the issue before us.

Let’s as a nation step out from under the shadow of this political ignorance the age of opposing just for opposing sake has long passed. Politics everywhere else has evolved and advanced and so to should we. We cannot continue to chop off our noses to spite our faces while the res of the world watches.

I wonder if that is the same Govt. land where squatters were sent eviction notices by Mr. Austie’s Min. of Housing in Feb. 2011. Will these squatters get first refusal for these new houses or will they be allocated to supporters of the ruling party? Votes in a constituency can be created in many ways.

    January 9, 2013

Eh eh Reggie. The idea that the area allocated for the houses under UWP was inappropriate because of the sea or salt is totally incorrect. Matter of fact, houses are built near the sea worldwide and as such the only thing that matters is the type of material used. Further, the steel did not corrode solely because of the environment but rather the extended exposure to the high salt area without the application of a protective coating. You guys need to understand that there are qualified people out there watching and listening to the karkar that politicians spew in an effort to fool the populace.

    • No Probs
      January 9, 2013

Qualified! But, the man is correct. The fact is the extended exposure of the steel to the sea salt caused it to deteriorate/rust. And yes Peeper, the environment does contribute. What do you think makes up the environment? Protective coating has nothing to do with what he is communicating.

Use that qualification elsewhere! And yes, there are qualified individuals out there.
