Executive Director of the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) Lancelot McCaskey has described a recently concluded two-day consultation on the way forward for renewable energy resources on island as timely.
According to McCaskey, the consultation which was held to help determine how Dominica develops its renewable energy resources for reducing energy costs and supporting economic growth is essential to the further development of the country.
“The geothermal resource that is expected to be underground in Dominica is very important, and ever since the IRC started we have been looking at prospects of electricity from geothermal resources coming on stream. We have in all the procedures that we have so far put together, made provisions for renewable energy, particularly geothermal. When the government employed the consultant to look at drafting renewable energy laws we were happy,” he said.
McCaskey said the IRC thinks it is always useful to go to consult with all the stakeholders.
“We welcome the consultation and hope that at the end we will have a bill that all stakeholders will embrace and government will approve,” he said.
