Marigot Hospital to become trauma centre

The Marigot Hospital

Health Minister Julius Timothy has announced that the Marigot Hospital will be remodeled into a trauma centre, the first of its kind in the country, to facilitate residents from Portsmouth to Delices.

There have been several calls to upgrade the Marigot hospital which is located in the vicinity of the Melville Hall airport.

According to the health minister the concept and designs for the Trauma centre are being finalized, with construction scheduled to  begin next year.

“We are now in the process of organizing to build a new hospital at Marigot. What we have in mind because of the location close to the airport is to make it a trauma centre,” the minister said.

Timothy indicated that this was being done so that “accidents from Portsmouth to Delices will not clog up the Princess Margaret, those on that side would go to the  Marigot Trauma Centre and the Princess Margaret hospital would deal with the rest of the island”.

Minister Timothy also says that plans for the new state of the art Princess Margaret Hospital are ongoing.

“Right now we’re in the design stage for the new hospital facility; we have prepared the outline as to exactly what we want in the compound and we are trying to prepare a design for the Chinese”. Timothy explained.

The new Princess Margaret Hospital will be constructed by the Chinese government while the Trauma Centre in Marigot will be done by local contractors.

A trauma center in Dominica is a great idea , but serious planning ,training and design must be considered . I would love to work there for free when I retire from my current job .Be
fore you build a trauma center you must determine where are your highly skilled staff will come from and how you keep them trained

That is just an atempt of the government trying to go after Mr.James seat fo next election. It is easyer now to get to Roseaue hospital now you want to put trauma center in Marigot connot be for portsmouth people cause you know most peolpe will die on that winding road before they reach.

Before you guys waist money due to your own political ambetions STOP!Put that in Portsmouth where there is enough land available, many good sights and a top medical university[ROSS]in the area.Equip the trauma center with a helicopter that wuold take pataints to Roseau and Menville Hall .Now you have covered the three main points on the Island.Just give Morigot a new updated hospital.

Please dont under estimate the people of Marigot I know for fact they cannot be bought by any price so Eddison seat is not in question as I see it but I do beleive when it comes to the Airport we need a good hospital because God forbid if some major accident should happen we should be able to go to the M’got hospital before ever taking the person or persons on that long drive to Roseau we have to put the people of the Island first I know that some will look at it as a political move but let’s take with a grain of salt.

We need a state of the art facility in Portsmouth. Who wants to drive all the way on this winding road to Marigot when you’re in serious pain. Government open your eyes. The medical school is right next door. Stop thinking backward.

To the Trauma Dr…..Sometimes the means of approach has to change on each attempt. I think your resistance has been because of people not understanding the position they hold and the reason they are in those position. Clueless. However, there is power in numbers. With this new healath care revamp onstream, I think the reception will be different. Your expertise is very much needed and I think a collaboration would be fantastic. You do you and other people do them, in one common attempt to make our country a better place to be, in sickness and in health. Free of politics, however, the Government cannot be ignored as our health sector is a public entity!

My advise to you is don’t retire yet in Dominica, make sure the new hospital has everything you may need including cancer treatment. I live in Dominica, I’ve been hospitalized and I know sometimes you can’t get done basic things like mamograms.

This is a great idea, not only for Marigot but, because of the Airport. A trauma center is a hospital equipped to provide comprehensive emergency medical services to patients suffering traumatic injuries.
I hope the Marigot/Trauma Centre will have trauma surgeons available, including those trained in such specialties as Neurosurgery and Orthopedic surgery as well as highly sophisticated medical diagnostic equipment. Lower levels of trauma centers may only be able to provide initial care and stabilization of a traumatic injury and arrange for transfer of the victim to a higher level of trauma care. A trauma center will often have a helipad for receiving patients that have been airlifted to the hospital. In many cases, persons injured in remote areas and transported to a distant Trauma Centre by helicopter can receive faster and better medical care than if they had been transported by ground ambulance to a closer hospital that does not have a designated trauma center.

brilliant idea by the government. People of Marigot wake up! wake up! they said that the stadium will not come. guess what? stadium is here. even hosting international cricket. they say that the west coast road will not happen, guess what? we now have a high way from Portsouth to Roseau. They said that night landing will never take place and guess waht? i came in the other day at almost ten oclock in the night. People of Marigot wake up from your slumber. The hospital will be delivered right in their faces. Now that’s development isn’t it? Poweeeeeeerrrrr to Labourrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

How can you justify telling a person from Delices to travel for almost 2 hours to a trauma center in Marigot when he can get to Roseau in 45 mins. Timothy have relatives in Boetica – imagine them traveling to Marigot when they can get to Roseau in half the time. They should look at using travel distance and travel time as the metrics in determining which community should Marigot and Roseau trauma center serve.

    • April 26, 2012

It’s about time that the GOVT look at the MARIGOT HOSPITAL because the airport is so close but to say a person should travel 2 hours to Marigot for treatment is nonsense DOETICA is closer to Rouseau Timothy think before you speak.

I dont think that this was thought through. So people, we get the point. The minister has to do a proper research before delivering his speeches and we need to find a better way of channeling our observation than having everything be negative and used to debase persons.

Good signs of progress. But someone still needs to explain why everything on D/a’s wish list can just be ‘sent to the Chinese’. All our major facilities that make a city a city are being developed by the Chinese, white house, stadium, hospital, ‘highway’. We have become Chinese and it seems we have not opened our eyes to that yet. This is getting more and more fishy if you ask me

Marigot people are not for purchase therefore because labour is doing the work that they are responsible for it’s not a gift to us, my friend if the airport wasnt in MARIGOT we would never be that lucky so we are not taking anything for granted but to say thank GOD for the work and hope that locals will beable to get a job, on the other hand it is considered good news for the people on the north

I guess you guys have not heard of the foundation being set up by Dr Thomas and others? Training in the health sector is a priority. Just believe and things will happen. there are patriots out there who are willing to help build the health sector. We just need people to be receptive, positive and ready to soar. We can do it. It does not always have to be a Government innitiative. We have a brain.

There are way too many insecure people in the health arena thinking that folks are out to take their jobs. I am an ATLS instructor and accomplishe trauma and general surgeon. 24. DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE
    April 25, 2012

Also, both the Portsmouth and Grandbay Hospitals need to be remodeled and upgraded to International Standards. Very good idea in transforming the Marigot Hospital into a Trauma Centre to serve the North and East. PMH will serve the South and West. St Lucia is about to inaugurate its new National Hospital in Castries soon – preparations are underway as I write. Also the second town of Vieux Fort will soon open its new state-of-the-art Hospital which is almost done. We need to keep pace with the OECS islands. The Princess Margaret Hospital should be remodeled in stages, first with a lobby which should include the receptionist/information desk, the pharmacy, a boutique, a lounge, a waiting room. We have got to get to higher heights. Our doctors who graduate from UWI should also be sent to the USA to undergo further training in areas of surgery, and internal medicine, and podiatry, and sports medicine.
