New Grotto Home project faces monetary challenges

Construction on the new Grotto Home project

Proposals for assistance from the government for the construction of a new Grotto Home for the Homeless have been sent to government as officials struggle with a lack of funds for the project.

They say that funds sourced for the project have already been utilized and the progress of construction is now being hindered.

“Government had given us $646,000 but we have already utilized those funds,” President of the Home, Ainsworth Irish, said. “We are about 45 percent complete in terms of the construction … so as I speak we have just submitted a proposal to government to complete the building. As you know we are doing it in three components and so we will be able to take away the persons from the streets who have become a menace especially when we have cruise ships in port.”

The project which is costing some $2.5-million dollars is expected to be ready by 2014 and officials say it will be home to 100 residents.

Irish said a Baptist mission from the United States is expected on the island soon to assist. “They will be here to do an assessment as they prepare to give us some assistance in monetary and in cash and kind,” he stated.

The estimated 50 persons being cared for by the Home are being temporarily housed at the Dominica Club while the new facility  is being built.

What about the Parliament mansion that is being built? Get some money from that project to suffice the budget gap for Grotto. Grotto house is more of a necessity than some mansion where nothing, but evil ideas will surface.

$646,000.00 for just the concrete blocks!!?!?! What is wrong with this picture. 45% complete, what a gross misuse of funds. I’m sure the job could have been completed for a much cheaper price.

A bit of awkward phrasing here. Had to read it twice to understand it once. Please, take pity on those of us who are not that bright. Hope the new Grotto home will see the l;ight of day.
