The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) in a collaborative effort with Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and the Roseau City Council, are intent upon furnishing the city with some 60 new litter bins.
Landfill Manager with the DSWMC, Marcus Francis, said that the bins are meant not just to reduce the litter around the city, but also to sensitize the public to the need to keep the city clean.
“As we continue to launch this [initiative], we want people to think beyond a container. We want them to think ‘clean environment’. We want them to think keeping the country clean for out benefit and for the benefit of the city,” Francis remarked
He urged the public to take care of the bins once they have been posted at locations across the city.
As far as collection of the waste, Mr. Francis indicated that that will be separate from regular trash collection and will be done as will be necessary based on volume of litter.
DDA CEO Colin Piper said that based on the design and size of the bins, they are not meant for disposal of commercial and residential refuse, but for the everyday litter from people moving around the city and that Dominicans should not indiscriminately dispose of garbage therein.
He also called on the corporate community to work with the DDA’s adopt-a-block initiative and aid in purchasing and distribution of the bins around the city.
The DSWMC insists that the process of procuring the bins will be a transparent one.
I wonder if there will be any bobol with these bins?
Finally! I don’t hv to carry garbage in my bag from Roseau.
Let’s hope that: 1. Paros and malicious people don’t mash them up. 2. That DSWMC makes timely pickups and emptying of the bins, so that garbage don’t spill-over unto the road.
Y do I even bother posting on here?Take your time and write carefully and then it diappears and a comment comes up you r posting comments too quickly. Is this for real? I guess is not Roro.
nice idea
Finally…bins in Roseau.
We don’t have any concept of waste management in order for us to tackle this problem, education and awareness in the area of waste and waste management is essential we have a throw away mentality try telling your neighbour it’s not environmental friendly to dispose of waste in ravines and on the roads, the reply you will get is pure verbal diarrhoea, we pride ourselves on calling Dominica the nature Island of the Caribbean, we were perhaps a nature Island when Christopher Columbus arrived here in 1493, we humans start complaining about Rubbish but what we fail to realise a country does not get dirty on it’s own, it’s the human activities that pollutes the environment with all types of waste products. Just imagine we don’t have any recycling facilities available to sort this man made disaster. In Europe and a few other countries around the world they have a system in place of waste collection, dustbins and waste sorting why can’t we do this here?
Wait till the chinese start to fill them with all their dog remains. Hahahahahahahahah
WHY DONT YOU GET A LIFE? SH*T FOR BRAIN
Well having the bins is one thing. However, there needs to be a regularly scheduled pick up to prevent the entity meant to alleviate the waste, being the cause of garbage accumulation. I like the idea of a key.. Great design
Does Dupuell and Dr.C Mc have anythingto do with these bins? They have a more British-like appearance unlike those from the misty woods of PA. .
more bin bobol again…….eh beh look daybah ib d country!!
wowowow it is about time! very good move. and please fine people who litter
Better late than never the bins finally arrived. Now installed G.P.S because if we cannot chain them to some object to keep them from being used as football and disappear over night our people are not the keepers as in the past . You read it here on D.N.O.
. .
I could not have said any better. Why do people insist of stealing the bins, it is already long overdue , Roseau is too dirty!
I believe that a good initiative taken up by the organizations. Now it’s time for the citizens to do their part and not drop trash all over, We cannot always keep pointing fingers because most of us are as guilty. If we all played a positive part we will see the results. Maybe if many people went outside of Dominica they’d see what other countries are like. I don’t believe Dominica sticks to the policy of “clean & green” anymore. It’s a disgrace the state the city is in.
Who vex loss… I speak my mind, and say what i see!!
The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) insisted that the process of procuring the bins will be a TRANSPARENT one. That statement cannot be clearer than that. Dominicans would well remember the secret purchase of RUBBISH BINS which was done through the Ministry of Finance under Skerritt. The Ministry claimed Bins were bought for the Roseau City Council. Remember all the controversies about the purchase of those 2700 Rubbish Bins? The price of each bin was INFLATED, huge profits were made as a result and the profits made went somewhere in some people’s pockets. Remember as well the third party in the US, a certain half-brother of a Minister of Govt., who was involved with the purchase of the Bins from the US?
Dominicans KNEW NOTHING. However, All the facts were revealed after serious investigations were conducted by a private investigative journalist. Up to now those facts regarding that issue cannot be refuted. Some people in authority tried to turn and twist the facts, but FACTS are FACTS, The TRUTH was revealed. Dominicans could not believe that such corrupt practices had taken place. Remember those involved paid back monies to the Treasury, although initially they claimed that the matter was made up and is because some people did not like Skerritt and the DLP Govt. Thousands upon thousands of Dollars was taken from the Taxpayers for the secret purchase. When TORY start to JUMP OUT, those ‘HIGH REPUTE people paid thousands of $$$$$$, piece by piece, back to the Treasury because of the DISCREPANCIES that were FOUND OUT.
The whole matter was mired in CORRUPTION. So this time around, the DSWMC is up front to assure the public that the PROCESS of PURCHASING the RUBBISH BINS would be a TRANSPARENT one. Thanks DSWMC. We Dominicans expected that it would be Solid Waste which would given the funds by Govt. to buy. the 2700 Rubbish Bins. But NO. Somebody was interested in how much DOLLARS they could make in that BOBOL.
What is most disturbing and a serious cause for alarm in Dominica is that there is a refusal to INVESTIGATE that RUBBISH BIN BOBOL issue. Some People of ‘High Repute’ did something WRONG. The secret transaction involved the use of taxpayers money taken from the Treasury. It is a national issue, Answers are needed. Dominicans are patiently awaiting law enforcement to do the necessary thing which is to investigate. Not to investigate such irresponsible corrupt acts done by those in Public Office is to send wrong messages to others who would want to embezzle public funds, steal, cheat or commit other illegal acts. Those involved in the Rubbish Bin Bobol did not want to admit but All the FACTS are THERE. Those FACTS are PLAIN to SEE and UNDERSTAND. WRONG is WRONG. If the ordinary Dominican had done that or any other such corrupt act, he/she would be brought to court, fined or jailed.
a man stole a plastic of crackers and a tin of sausage because he was hungry and he was sent to jail. How much will it cost tax payers to feed that man at the prison for six months? prosecute the money hungry ministers and CO seize their unaccounted properties and cash to feed the hungry
The sad thing about the commonwealth of DA is with all this too bvious evidence of extreme corruption these Hit heads are still in office and planning new schemes. We as a people just continue to talk. This why i left two decades ago can’t stand sh*t and a silly population.
60 Garbage bins are a big deal too? Aren’t you all tired of thinking small? What can a city do with 60 ngarbage bins??? Not even 100, but 60? Stupessssss. And that made the news too? SMH
….and how many refuse bins does Tete Morne have? As far as I know you guys dump everything in the ravine! Yes, this is a big deal, and a positive one, given that we have no public garbage cans at all today in Roseau. If the number are inadequate we can always add some – in fact we should build in that flexibility for occasions such as carnival. Initiatives like this one should be applauded.
Been dumping rubbish in de ravine for decades and it does not kill. Your point………???????
It’s not only the bins, but management as well. The city needs to be supervised.
Yes I ,good move ,roseau needed dat, just hope that the bath estate residents which are coke dealers don’t bring dem at dere home
new bins to KWAZAY n put all d rubbish next 2 it…
dominicans have lost pride in keeping dominica clean, the government needs to fine the business owners and roseau people are nasty.
Hey, not only “Roseau” people alone that’s nasty. I stand corrected to say “most of us(dominicans) are nasty! Damn it, stop poitint fingers!! If everyone would think twice about dropping garbage all over the city would b a bit cleaner. It takes the effort from EVERYBODY!!
What about all the Bins from the BIN BOBOL the Roseau City Council was supposed to have gotten?
trust me tht’s not gonna solve anything…………..nasty people are still going to throw their wrappin gor what have you on the ground even if a bin is close…………i’v seen it happening to many times………i wonder wht inside thier homes look like
I wonder too, am hoping that some of them surprise me and throw it in the bin . people need to learn how to keep the place clean
about bloody time
Finally…i always envisioned bin like this in the streets of Roseau. I hope these will help with the cleanliness of the country and the city as well!!!!!
