New water tank at Morne Bruce to eliminate water storage problems in Roseau

The tank under construction

Work on a 500,000 imperial gallon storage tank now being constructed at Morne Bruce is said to be progressing satisfactorily.

The $4-million project which began three months ago is said to be ahead of schedule and barring any unforeseen circumstances, is expected to be complete by April of next year.

Chief Engineer at DOWASCO, Magnus Williams, spoke to GIS news during a site visit on Monday, July 18, 2011. He said that when the project is complete water capacity for the city of Roseau will be significantly enhanced.  A special chamber will be dedicated to providing water to the Windsor Park Stadium.

“Right now, we are undertaking the construction of a 500 000 imperial gallon storage tank up here at Morne Bruce. It is going to have three chambers which can be dedicated to separate purposes. One of the main problems we have on our W-1 system is storage capacity and this will add like I said before, 500 000 gallons of stage which can go towards augmenting the capacity for the city of Roseau. We can have dedicated storage for the stadium, for instance and also bulk storage capacity for serving cruise ships and other ships that wish to take water,” Williams said.

This new storage tank will compliment several other tanks managed by DOWASCO. The community of Kingshill will also benefit from this new storage facility at Morne Bruce.

“Water comes from our Springfield intake and Antrim treatment plant. So it will be like just one of the other tanks on our system. We presently have about 20 tanks on the system. This will be an additional storage tank and it will serve parts of Kingshill and parts of Roseau,” Williams stated.

Hon. Minister for Lands, Housing, Settlement and Water Resource Management, Reginald Austrie, said that Government is hoping that this project when complete will eliminate all of the water problems in the Roseau catchment area.

“As you know, Roseau, Kingshill, Morne Bruce, all these areas get water from the Antrim system and even when we are feeding the cruise ships we understand that we normally have problems with the residents of Kingshill getting water. So this will seek to increase the capacity of water into Roseau and the environs. It is also going to provide a dedicated water system for the National Stadium. I have been advised that on any one day when the stadium is being used we consume about eighty thousand (80 000) gallons of water. So, we are doing one of the chambers that will be especially dedicated to supplying the stadium with water. We are hoping, with the completion and commissioning of this tank, most or all of the water problems in the Roseau area will be taken care of,” he said.

General Manager of DOWASCO, Bernard Ettinoffe, is satisfied with work done on the project thus far.

“It is being constructed at a cost of just over$4-million. The contracted works contracted out is just over $2.4-million. We expect that we will be spending a little over $1.6-million for pipes and fittings and so forth. The project is expected to be completed sometime in April of 2012. It is something that we are looking forward to as you can see it is going very smoothly. The contractor is ACE Engineering and so far, we are satisfied with the progress on this project,” he said.

Congratulations, for a long overdue enhancement to the. WA 1 water system. Can someone tell us what is the daily water consumption to the area this storage tank will provide water to. With 3 seperate compatrmments, consisting of dedicated compartments to the stadium and cruise (ships), why wasn’t a seperate tank say 30,000-50,000 gallon capacity set up for the Kings Hill / Morne Bruce area? Just asking. Anyway, this is still a big step, let’s hope the retention/ sedimentation tank at Antrim is also expanded. This would be a positive step to providing the populace with potable water. Thanks for a step in the right direction.

One would assume that the section reserved for the stadium will only be used for the sradium when it is in use. On days when the stadium is sitting idle, they will use that capacity to supply Roseau, Kingshill and the other areas. You have to give DOWASCO some credit. I don’t think they would have an entire section of the storage tank sitting there just waiting for a game of cricket.

Can you not stop looking for something negative to say. Is like looking for a tiny hole in a well dressed man or woman robe. Just to say something negative.

Thanks Dowasco and the Gov’t of Dominica for this much needed project. This I am sure will help to eliminate the water low pressure and shortage that the people of Kingshill experience sometimes.

Also I do welcome that a storage tank will be dedicated to the Windsor Park Stadium. This is a good strategy especially since we will be hosting future test matches there. I claim and decree this in the Name of the Son of God the Father.
