Newtown to get state of the art school

The Education Minister and MP George at the site of the new school

The Government of Dominica earlier this week confirmed that construction on the new Newtown Primary School will begin before the end of the year.

The Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Petter Saint-Jean told students at the start of a week-long Reading Festival on Monday that they would soon be attending classes in a new state of the art facility.

“Let me give the principal, the staff, the PTA, students of this school the assurance that the Ministry of Education and the Government of Dominica are working vigorously,” Saint-Jean said, adding that work would commence as soon as a retaining wall, now under construction, was completed.

“We believe that you must be given the conducive learning environment where you can do well and take up your rightful positions in the Dominican society,” he said.

The construction of the new school will be funded through a grant from the People’s Republic of China.

Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau South Constituency Ambrose George reiterated his government’s intention to construct the school within the shortest possible time, stressing that it was a long overdue project.

“The fact that the contractors are on site and building the much needed retaining wall, is a clear indication that the new Newtown Primary School will be constructed as soon as possible,” George said, adding that the school would have an important feature that would set it apart from other schools in Dominica.

“Not only will the schools be four storeys high but it will have an elevator, so that we can have the students who are challenged physically, attend school and access the classrooms properly,” he said.

Wow, sounds great. Any pics of what the finished product will look like?

Building it 4 storeys high is a great idea. This means more classrooms/facilities.

Once built, it should generate jobs for the locals (cleaners, security etc).

One small point, hope it will have someone there to monitor the kids with regards to using the lift (kids love to play around in lifts. I know I did ).

Why should a primary school be so tall? Four storeys, for children who are full of energy-sound dangerous to me.

The elevator won’t last either. :-?

As an original Harlem massive, I would like to say I fully support this project. When I visit Dominica again and set foot back in my hometown of newtown, I will visit this school with great pride and a smile. The parents and students and the youth should take full advantage of this and what ever projects we receive in the future. Due to our location and lack of space because of coastal living it is very difficult to develop this place. Newtown is predominantly populated by young men. Since I have known myself Newtown has not been blessed with women and the majority of these young men do not finish school or don’t take it seriously. Please take full advantage of these things when we receive it. Bless !!!!!
