OAS donates firearms marking machine to Dominica

The Organization of American States (OAS) today donated a firearms marking machine to the Government of Dominica to be used by its Ministry of National Security, Immigration and Labor with the objective of combating the illicit trafficking of firearms. This initiative, which is currently being implemented in various countries of the region, forms part of the efforts outlined by the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, and serves to exemplify the organization as a strategic actor in the fight against crime.

The machine was presented during a ceremony held in the headquarters of the Police of Dominica, in Roseau, and was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Security, Immigration and Labor, Nicholas Bruno, and other authorities.

The donation—funded by the Government of the United States—is part of the program “Promoting Firearms Marking in Latin America and the Caribbean,” following the Inter-American Convention against Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CIFTA), and seeks to strengthen national capabilities on matters of firearms marking.

The OAS submitted to the Government of Dominica a special computer, to facilitate the process of record-keeping on marked firearms. Also, the OAS Department of Public Security will hold a training workshop on the use of firearms marking equipment with ten officials from the Police of Dominica.

Among the OAS’s principal goals is the strengthening of national capabilities of the Member States to respond, in an effective and efficient way, to the growing levels of crime and violence caused by the illicit trafficking in firearms. In this sense, the OAS cooperates with the countries of the region with the objective that, in the shortest time possible, all the Member States will have established policies, as well as relevant legislation to mark firearms at the time of manufacturing and/or import.

To date, 21 countries in the region have signed a cooperation agreement with the OAS to participate in the program: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Costa Rica, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Uruguay, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.

Boy this thing is worrying me like crazy… I would hate for guns to end up in the wrong hands. I guess this is how the Americans do it, so they can turn a country violent and create chaos.

It is disguise as something else to help immigration?

People need jobs and ways to create jobs not guns. with full employment police do not need guns when most of the citizens are content and I mean well paying jobs.

I NEED A PRATICAL EXAMPLE ON HOW THIS IS GOING TO CUT DOWN ON CRIME.

This is not a tool intended to cut down on crimes. For as most state criminals don’t adhere to laws! This will aid the authorities in investigating crimes involving firearms, because when ” marked” and it is confiscated in someone else’s possession, then authorities can ask pertinent questions as to whether it was legally obtained!
But they need harsh laws to act as a deterrent. Mandatory minimums for anyone caught with an unlicensed firearm of let’s say 15 years!

so how does marking a firearm stop someone from trafficking them or anything the weapons are already marked and its called a serial number stamped on the barrel of the weapon its alot easier to just use that already inplace serial number than to go threw the cost of adding a new number on there what they should do with every gun they get there hands on if test fire 5 rounds from it keep those bullets ( cause all rifling in the barrels are different ) and martch that to the manufacturers serial number and voila the beginning of a weapons database just like in developped countries u putting an extra mark on a weapon goign to do absolutely nothing to aid in traficking

While you are partially correct, the grooves in the inner barrel can be compromised by infusing a metal brush with hard bristles to disrupt the ballistic patterns you are suggesting. I won’t go into detail but it can be done.

        April 5, 2012

So if I bring in my firearm and you have collected 5 spent rounds for your database, as i leave I can compromise my barrel so that your grooves don’t match mine.

    Hmmm!

I mean you can try anything but as long as you have industries manufacturing untold number of ammunition into the public, there will always be illegal guns.

It would be reasonable to assume that most illegal guns don’t enter the country through legal avenues. How can you fight an issue and not go to the root cause? The US government will fund all kinds of gun marking operations, but do they put a curb on their industries that produces untold millions of ammunition every year?

Most ordinary people cannot just produce firearms at their homes you know. The US is very protective of their firearm industry and then coming after and provide gun marking machine. Try shutting down some of them gun factories all you have there and there will be less illegal firearms out in the public.

This is just like throwing rocks in your path for you to burst your toe and then coming and offer you a band-aid after. Hypocracy!

    I watchin’ still!!!
