Dominicans have been told not to let uncertainty get in the way of their acceptance of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Economic Union.
Heads of governments last year accepted to undertake the final stages of completion of the agreement, and will meet in St. Lucia in June, when the treaty establishing the union comes into full effect.
OECS heads have said the agreement will have member countries work collaboratively to confront challenges they face as small states; but even so, some have concerns about how effective the accord will be.
Randolph Cato, senior director of the OECS says the people of the sub-region must bear in mind there are challenges that OECS member nations have extreme difficulty dealing with on their own.
“It is better for these small countries like ourselves to find ways of working together, of bringing together what each can put on the table. When all of us combine and we put things together to do something we all achieve more than what we could have done, if we were trying to do those things by ourselves,” Cato stated.
He admitted there will be some uncertainty among people of the sub-region, adding “because this process still has to be implemented, but we must nonetheless be positive, even if there might be that uncertainty.”
