PM Skerrit promises 500 new jobs

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hinted that by the end of September that at least 500 young people will be offered employment opportunities.

This because a major US-based company is doing ground work here and if all goes well, is expected to set up operations in Dominica.

“I hope to be in a position before the end of this month to announce the creation of at least 500 new jobs for young Dominicans,” Skerrit said at a Dominica Labour Party delegates conference in Pointe Michel on Sunday.

The prime minister said the Government has done all on its part, but the final decision rests with the Board of Directors of the company.

“I will not jump the gun here this afternoon, but I assure you that all the preparatory work has been done,” he said. “The Government of Dominica has done everything in its power to make this happen, and it is now for the board of directors … to give the green light for this company to set up shop in Dominica.”

Almost one month ago, US-based Clear Harbour, announced its decision to axe 243 employees.

The company said it was adding two new accounts to its existing one and will re-hire the redundant workers.

Did that US company finally made it home? If yes, were any of the position filled? What kind of business were they going to do back home anyway?

I hope this is true and he follows through with it. DA needs a shift toward more positivity, especially for the youths, who have seen their parents’ struggles and want to eliminate that multi-generational poverty. Furthermore, I hope those jobs will provide enough income for those employees to afford bus fare, food for the day, money for necessities, plus enough disposable income to take their love ones for a weekend treat. #Stop giving incentives to the rich, and give them to the poor.

I think the opposition is stuck in political trance… they believe that this is Prime minister practicing politics of the past which they are used to. The irony is the same bad politics and lies they accuse the prime minister of is how they themselves operate.

I am for jobs and 500 new jobs really sounds good to the ear. But let’s put away politics for now and be true Dominicans again.
Hon. Skerrit, what sense it makes to try to get 500 new job from a foreign at a time when quite a few Dominicans will be losing their job due to the closure of Breeze’s Mart OCT. 1? After all sir, we are Dominicans first and we do have a right to agree or disagree with political parties and and we have a right to do so in a peaceful and respectful manner, like Mr. Brisbane did.

Sir, it was your security minister, who was not elected by the people that called for the boycott of Breeze’s mart. Labourites listened to him and come Octo 1 2013, they will close down and more Dominicans will be left without a salary. But what hurts more is the fact that neither the PM and party leader, nor, president or PRO of the DLP ever condemned Savrin’s statement. By the time a new election is called Mr. Savrin will retire and tax payers will have to pay him a salary; when tax payers are sent home, how will Mr. dangerous Savrin get a salary? Do you call this leadership?

Election is comming and everyone is making promises. The Govt. will make new ones and refresh the old ones. The oposition likewise will make new ones. They both are going to promise us jobs, an international airport, more food on our table, a better Dominica and a better life. We have to look at what is being said and how realistic are those promises. How are they going to achieve these things to make good on their promises. We are in some hard times like the rest of the world and nothing is going to come easy. The super powers of the world are struggling so we are expected to have it difficult. So when the political parties try to make us believe that they can make us walk on streets of gold know they are fakes. When they tell us that they will stabilize this country, slowly move forward in strengthening our economy with our help and that of other countries then we know they are close to reality. Lets hear from you Labour and UWP.

Mr. Skerrit you have nothing else to offer the youth of this nation that will inspire hope. We voted you and trusted you and instead of keeping with the promise to make life on this island better for all of us, the part of the bargain you have kept is making life better for you and yours. For a matter of fact when the question is posed, where can one find the richest men in politics? We the nation knows the answer too well.

Doctor we have supported you well over the years despite the lies, allegations and innuendos according to you but every day we stumble upon new revelations and information. Right now ministers have so much money they don’t know what to do with it, but time will tell.

This government has been a failed experiment. We have seen the roads and some improvement in scanty proportions but where it really matters we have seen no more than empty promises. Instead of new jobs being created we see more jobs for the boys. What have you done; to grow the Dominican economy, include the delinquent youth who wonders around, cater to the multiplied thousands leaving school every year, how about those you provide university education toT there seem to be more questions than answers. You have proven that you are not the answer to Dominica’s problems for you only come across as one of those self serving politicians that the region has ever known and there is going to be a day of reckoning. Fellow Dominicans,

Lets be realistic and separate politics from reality itself. We have been for the past 6 years in a world of economic turbulence and it’s apparent that we are slowly at this moment recovering and making great trends.

Now, during those 6 years of global economic downturn Dominica appeared to have done tremendously well economically compared with most of the other countries in the world. After all, I think we should give credit to the present government, the DLP.

Without a doubt, any government elected, be it DLP, UWP, Freedom Party, would love to see Dominica prosper. Most, or probably all of the Dominican politicians are godly, ambitious, and have good intentions.

Had all have the required resources and other means to develop and prosper this country of Dominica, they would.

We are educated, we have the credentials, we have the experience and the skills, and most of all we have the godly wisdom but the other resources are scarce.

In summary, we fight and hurt each other for an opportunity to prove ourselves. Let’s unite and work as a team to move this nation forward.

      September 18, 2013

While i agree with most of your comments, i think you fail to realized that we Dominican is aware that its difficult times.
That is why we want to be sure that every tax dollar paid is accounted for properly. We want to be sure that the scarce resources are allocated in the most efficient way and at minimum cost. We want to be sure that the government of the day are transparent and we get the best deals ( minimum cost) at an accepted level of risk.

we want to ensure that our social programs are properly targeted. we want to eliminate wastage and increase productivity.

we want to ensure that projects go through the proper tendering process.

when things are bad every dollar is important. When the people see wastage , abuse of power, low productivity , ministers and their cronies only doing well in these hard times it leave the concerned and patriotic with no choice but to ENSURE THAT CHANGE IS A MUST AND NOT AN OPTION.

The labor party is going to keep winning and keep digging Dominica deeper and deeper into debt. We are in a Modern world, and in a modern society people are held accountable for the things that they do, even in communist China, politicians are held accountable when they take bribes and gifts from business men.

In Dominica we are told to mine our business and we accept that as truth and there are those of us who cheer to that type of rubbish. I want the very best for my dear country I really do, but I fear it will remain one of the most underdeveloped countries in the caribbean because of the people of Dominica unwillingness to DEMAND change. I am not saying change will come by changing party or politicians, Change will only come when we as a people demand better we tell these clowns that we want state of the art hospitals, skilled doctors, globally competitive education (not the scholarships in non-english speeaking countries) I could go on and on and on

Hon. Prime Minister in the United States today right at this moment companies are given tax incentives for creating Jobs in the US. What is it that you are offering this company that the United States is not able to offer? I am not aware of any US company who at this moment would want to set up shop in Dominica a country with poor air access compounded with the LIAT situation and poor port infratructure and even the question of doing business makes it even more difficult, as far as i understand it even local business persons are having a hell of a time to even restructure their business, Government from all over the caribbean with much better infrastructure are finding it most difficult to attract foreign investment, a US base call center in Dominica looks like they are rapping up operations, yet 500 jobs coming to DA from the US, please Hon PM advise other caribbean leaders how best to do what you just did. And like the goodly leader of the UWP Lenox Linton said on Matt program this is good news for Dominica while we wait patiently for the arrival of these 500 jobs, the constituents of the unemployed will be smiling, guess we will expect to hear a high way from Scotts Head to Portsmouth with the various exits to villages on the west coast soon builty by the chinese

If the jobs become a reality that would be significant cause the country is in a mess.
While we must all hope that the project comes to fruition we must remain cautiously optimstic as t hese type of jobs are very volatile. A company that is willing to set up shop in a forign country within a period of two months is one that we should approach with caution.
What we need are sustainable jobs through reliable investments. We need to create an environment for solid foreign investments. While Clear Harbor provu ded the much needed jobs our emplyment sector must be built on a strong foundation.
It is not surprising that people are suspicious of the announcement right at the warming point of the election campaign. The ideal question is where was this company two years ago. If the company can mobilize in twi months why wasnr this effort made two or five years ago. Or even a year ago.

You cannot come and put people in more servitude and call dat Jobs, dats just passing time,,,

People need real jobs, real career oriented duties where dey can do entry level work build on a career learn while working have a good living and hopefully good retirement, not hand-out from establishments that can juss say “ok we done dealing with you and dats dat”!!!

People should know the real deal and who/what this company called Clear Harbor is/they do,,,

Simple arithmetic, Clear Harbor sends home 243 that leaves 257, Brizee Mart sends home 25 left 232, Where else? A small company is closing and sending home 15 left 217. A number of public servants are retiring without replacement, they call that attrition. So net employment, IF and only IF, the 500 jobs materialize we are left with just about 200 jobs in 15 years,so why is Skerrtit beating his chest? @ real Posie,
i am still awaiting for you to show your manhood and post with your real name.while you at it don’t forget to continue what you started about my wife running loose in Posie. On a different note i am shame of the content of your comment giving that you are from posie. I would want to believe that any rational thinking individual would not compare an opposition with no budget and a parliamentarian with a budget and parliament backing ( the eyes always have it) with respect to deliverables from campaign promises.
real posie , you support so blindly that you making yourself a fool. When DLP was in opposition did you all ask them what they did and how are they going to achieve their promises. Did you knew before hand that Dominica was going to sever ties with China. I Guess the table change.

        @ the topic,
in this guava crop time , any news of employment is very welcoming given the fact the employment has been soaring over the past decade. Mr. Prime Minister i commend you with your efforts to pull this one off. i hope that you give every possible concession while holding firm to the respect of our labor code ( as these firms sometimes seek to pay wages below statutory minimum and avoid paying overtime ). Most importantly i will be the first to congratulate you come October the first and i pray that this company set up shop in Dominica.

Though not yet delivered ,but if true you made the effort and on that note i must say job well done.

It shows that you start listening to People. we have said and will continue to say that we need jobs . Yes jobs that are sustainable and pays well. However to achieve such objective i think we need a paradigm shift. Its time for fresh ideas, creativity and a bit of innovation. ON THAT NOTE I WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE THE FACT THAT CHANGE SHOULD BE A MOST AND NOT AN OPTION.

I VOTING FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL DROP OUT WHO’S GOT COMMITMENT, CHARACTER AND COMPETENCE. DON’T FORGET THE DYNAMIC TEAMS THAT SURROUNDS OUR ESTEEM LEADER.

what will you do with an international airport? How do plan to support and operate an airline for international travel? before you build a house you must survey the land, clear it, inspect it, build your foundation then your house… why would you build a house in the middle of a desert? Dominica is a desert for international travel, we don’t have the infrastructure to support that type of traffic. the country has to progress from within technologically, academically, financially, socially , culturally, business wise to support and take advantage of the influx of traffic the international airport would bring otherwise the foreign nationals building the airport and the UWP people that taking the money will be the only ones benefiting!! @ Real Posie,

Antigua is a very small place. i know everyone from Portsmouth that reside in Antigua. I am the only person from Posie leaving in Antigua that have a woman in my case wife that resides in Portsmouth. Moreover i am the only person who post regularly by my right name that lives in Antigua. Also there are very few post where individuals use fake names and mention that they leaves in Antigua. Don’t forget i am blogging from since the days of CAKafette. Most off all i can say that of all posie people leaving in Antigua i am the only one that do not support DLP.

Don’t start what you cannot finish . As a matter of fact i did not even blog yet for the day but you were on my back.

I come here and have never called someone name in a manner that’s derogatory, defamatory or any such way to embarrass them. I’ve been posting from the days of Cakafette and one reason why i use my right name is to ensure that i am responsible with my post.

As a practicing economist and one with political aspiration , i take a deep interest in whats going on in my country and the global economy.

I don’t come here pretending like i know it all but i share my views as a concerned Dominican and i also learned a lot here as well. There are a few bloggers Like Peeping TOM , MET YO etc that clearly supports DLP ,we debated a lot here and although we disagree on a lot of issues i must say that we never got so low and i did learn a few things from them in the process.

That is what excite me here . i learn here , try educate people here and at times i get a good laugh at some comments . Am not DLP/UWP/DFP. Never vote yet in Dominica. However i said since the days of CAKAfete that i will not support any government that oppose an INTERNATIONAL Airport. They use to tell me that i putting the chicken before the eggs. so long no eggs coming. i say now put the airport ( chicken) and recognizable hotels ( the eggs) will come. ON THAT NOTE I SAY CHANGE SHOULD BE A MUST AND NOT AN OPTION. if UWP come and cannot deliver then out they going. i will be the first to admit i was wrong.

        Peace.
