A decision is expected to be taken this week on the way forward for the Trafalgar/Wotten Waven river crossing.
Hon Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit visited the site on Wednesday, January 6th where a 90-foot bailey bridge donated by the Government of Jamaica has already been constructed.
The Dominica leader was accompanied by the Hon Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Valley Constituency, Dr. John Colin McIntyre; Hon. National Security Minister, Rayburn Blackmoore; Hon Public Works Minister, Ian Pinard and engineers in the Ministry of Public Works.
“There’s a suggestion that we should seek another bailey bridge to reach the adjoining road or paving the remaining distance to allow for vehicular traffic,” he said.
The bridge is about eighty feet short of the other side.
The Hon Prime Minister explained that while there is an 110-foot bridge on the island, other areas require assistance.
“We have considered all things and see how we can address these issues. There’s a situation in Vauxhall in Melville Hall, we also have to strengthen or replace the existing bridge in Geneva,” he revealed.
The new crossing is expected to make life easier for residents of both communities.
“We have several vendors and hot water spots in this area…They will have another route out of Trafalgar and Wotten.”
The Hon Roseau Valley Mp says the crossing will bring to an end the concerns of residents of the communities, especially during inclement weather conditions.
“In the past, every time it rained and flooded, calls came from the constituents that the bridge is flooded and impassable,” Dr. McIntyre said.
Pm u must Admit that you and your cabinet ministers have killed Dominica just waiting to be buried but GOD will save Dominica from the hand of the pharaohs
the construction of a wooden temporary bridge would have even been better. using material from dcas lush forests. btw what was there before wasn’t a bridge, it was just a few culverts laying in the river. but the wooden bridge idea could really work. using thick pieces of lumber, and using proper propping methods, that could have worked easily, ensuring that the vendors have bread to eat. now we’re too short. as the saying goes, too long is better than too short. they knew that beforehand but still proceeded. anyhow, life goes on.
LMAO. No. Is this saying the bridge just stops short in the middle of the river? SO an unsuspecting person might think…oh they built a bridge, start driving down, only to learn it doesn’t take them to the other side?
Uh-uh. this one takes the cake! And that says a lot coming from Dominica these days!
These are meant to be temporary, but the way things going ,that will be it for a long time if the river don’t take that .
What drug were the engineers taking ? I hope that’s it not the drug of fear. Let’s do something to appease the people.knowing that the bridge will be short.
Are you kidding me? That can easily be called The Bridge To Nowhere!
The bridge is 80Ft short? . So you telling me that we knew all along the installed bridge was 80ft short but we went ahead and installed it anyway? . That Lead Engineer and the minister need to be fire forthwith! But which Engineering school these guys went to nuh?
Garson that will not work because even if you backfill the additional distance the material will be very unstable and all that material will be washed away the next time we have heavy rains. So we build a bridge that stopping in the middle of the river and it taking Skerro to go there and say that doh good? . Where is Matt, Carlisle, Angelo and Arandale when you need them? I hope is NOT bottom Brain students that built this .
Assertive, NOT Aggressive!
I would question the picture of the bridge and angle at which it was taken. Was that deliberate? mmmmm
A 90-foot bridge was erected which is short by 80 feet to the other end. Is a second (part) bridge to complete the length planned? the statement from the PM does not indicate that.
I can look at the old Bath Estate Bridge and see lessons from the past that can be employed today. Why not employ a suspension-style bridge? It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this bridge is much too low given our high annual rain fall and unpredictable rivers. What do I know anyways? I’m just a simple “Crab and Manicou Hunter.”
“Transportation will be made easier for residents of the Roseau Valley as a Bailey Bridge being installed in that area is nearing completion.”
According to him the bridge is expected to be completed immediately after Christmas.
“Once completed it will no doubt enhance prospects for tourism and an improved way of life for the residents of Wotten Waven and Trafalgar in particular. We are getting back on track one day at a time,” the Prime Minister said”. That was on December 28th
All of a sudden on January 11th it is being debated whether to seek another Bailey Bridge or to pave the rest of the way. Lets keep paying attention!!!!
How much more laughs am I going to have this year?
Much thanks to the government and the people of Jamaica.
I am not an engineer but from what I can see, the anchor looks so close to the edge of the river and the bridge looks low; hope the bridge does not wash away during the next storm.
Did the anointed part the waters with his rod? Remember, God did not allow the leader of the chosen people to enter the promised land
