Box culverts under construction

Work to rehabilitate a portion of road at William Estate in Pond Case is progressing smoothly.

The project stands about 20 percent complete with construction of a box culvert and a retaining wall currently ongoing after a temporary by-pass was constructed to re-instate vehicular access.

Heavy rainfall was experienced Between April 17 and 19, 2013, throughout Dominica resulted in the culvert structure being washed away leaving a 25m gap in the roadway.
At that time two streams of reasonable current flowed into the culvert structure of 1.2m in diameter.

The project includes the construction of a 25m box culvert of, 4m high retaining walls at the inlet and outlet of the culvert and complete reinstatement of the roadway.

The project costing EC$985,869.98 is being undertaken by George Trucking and Excavation Services.

Work is progressing from the downstream end upwards without any traffic disruption along the by-pass.

Good to see locals performing the work. However, from the glimpse I am getting through those pics, I have some questions- not criticism – just a few questions? First thing that jumped out to me is why is a “Trucking and Excavation” company building the culvert and headwall/retaining wall? Based on their name, I would think they would perform the excavation for contractor to build the wall. Secondly, is there a diversion ditch or pipe on that site to protect the incomplete structure in case of heavy rain? On these major structures, is silt fence used to protect the waterways from filling up with fines from the run-offs? Are the ends of the culvert at the upstream end adequately turn down and embedded to prevent undermining? And lastly, why this thing cost soo much? What contribute to the bulk of construction cost in Dominica? Labor, material, or design?

How was’nt this project opened for tendering and why is it given to Nanton? is he the only contractor who can do this work. They cannot pay Public Works yet projects of this nature are not given to them- Ah Magwa sar!

nantan is not a contractor he owns heavy equipment. that is just kickback jobs, cause this was not tendered and that cannot cost a million, just like the colvert dey putting by secretbay, not tendered and costing 1.4million

But why everything coming from Charlie Jong tongue now? Is only the Office of the P.M. we have.? GIS tongue-tied? Individual ministers not allowed to speak again? I’m glad theyu are fixing the road but I would not boast about 20% completion after more than a year.
