Minster responsible for Water Resource Management, Reginald Austrie, has told residents of the community of Savanne in Scotts Head that by Christmas their water troubles will be no more.
Austrie made the remarks on Thursday at the contract signing of Phase Two of an EC$1.6-million water supply project at the Caribantic in Scotts Head.
“You the people of Savanne for years have had this difficulty with your water supply,” he said, noting that there have been “many, many complaints” on the matter.
Austrie pointed out that because of this water problem, the progress of the community had been hindered.
“As I understand it, it is as a result of this water problem that it retarded the construction and expansion of your beautiful community because nobody wants to go and live where there is no water,” he said. “And so we expect that with the completion of that project, which I understand can be anywhere between three to four months, we will push the contractor to ensure that you will get the most beautiful gift for Christmas, which will be free flowing and free running water.”
The minister stated that after the project is completed, gone will be the days when residents had to wait at two and three o’clock in the morning to collect the precious commodity because of low water pressure.
“We are hoping that with the commissioning of this supply, this will be a thing of the past,” he said.
Austrie also said that the government has spent EC$180-million to bring potable water to the country since 2004.
Meantime General Manager of DOWASCO, Bernard Ettinoffe said he is pleased that the government of Dominica chose to do the project.
“$1.6 Million is quite a bit of money,” he said. “The government could have chosen to use that money for anything else.”
He noted that DOWASCO had interceded, along with MP Sam Martin, to see this project come to fruition.
He informed that the government of Dominica received the money for its budgetary support program from the European Union (EU) through the office of the National Authorizing Officer to the European Development Fund (EDF).
Phase One of the project has already been completed and Phase Two, which is about to begin, will include the construction of the 30,000 gallon water storage tank, a pump house, and installation of two electrical pumps and other electrical works.
