Solar PV Project coming to Kalinago Territory

solarThe Ministry of Kalinago Affairs is spearheading the thrust to make the Kalinago Territory the first communal solar energy user on the island of Wai’tukubuli (Dominica).

Like many local, regional and international agencies, the Ministry has realized that energy from the sun provides a consistent and steady source of solar power throughout the year. This particular imitative has been funded by the European Union through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, and is based on evidence that the world’s non-renewable resources are set to decline in the years to come.

The main benefit of such a solar project is that it is going to be easily deployed for both home and public users as it does not require any huge set up like in the case of wind or geothermal power.

The Ministry of Kalinago Affairs, as a functional entity of central government, is mindful that solar energy not only benefits individual owners, but also benefits mother earth (the environment) as well.

As an indigenous community, the Kalinago Territory will join many who observe that solar energy is one of the most widely used renewable energy source all around the world.

The project will provide for 145 private DOMLEC grid connected homes, fifteen private stand-alone units and seven public buildings.

The project is facilitated by the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs with the endorsement of the Ministry of Health and the Environment, and implemented by the DCH Solargiga GmBH from Germany.

Subsequent to this, the operations and management of the project will be undertaken by the Kalinago Council.

It’s about time we go into that direction . 100 million to build a new geothermal energy plant that is a lot of money if the Gov would reconceder instead to build 7 to 8 solar energy farms to provide the whole of dominica with electricity I sure it would be much much cheaper .
In India there is an aiport that was newly built and it is 100 % green all it’s power comes from solar and other airports are following suit . It has been said that it will pay foritself in five to seven years .This is what we need to do to reduce our electricity costs so it can now have a direct impact on our economy I think we need to work faster towards going green all the way .

I think it is unfortunate that the Ministry of Carib Affairs seem to be bent on taking all the credit for the project, the research was done in the kalinago territory with the Caribbean community climate Change center and Kalinago Council, from the inception the kalinago council has been on board, the council on its own make the land available, while Carib Affairs undertook the excavation work to prepare the site, that was done without technical assistance and without informing the chief that they were ready to undertake the work, they fitted their labour stoogie to undertake the work and offered top pay him EC$25,000.00, they so wanted to make the work look like value for money they dug so deeply and spoiled the area when they only had to do a light scraping of the surface, and so the chief and council had to move urgently to secure another site yet they seem to be claiming all the credit just to make it look like labour ka twavay’.
