Tasha P, Ophelia cited as ‘agents of change’

President of the local branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Alix Boyd Knights has highlighted Dominica’s first female calypso monarch Tasha P and Lady of Song Ophelia Marie as some Dominican women who she says have proven to be agents of change.

Knights’ remarks came as Dominica held an ecumenical service in observance of Commonwealth Day today under the theme: “Women as Agents of Change”.

Commonwealth Day has been used as an avenue to learn about the history of the grouping and the issues that affect member territories.

The Commonwealth as a grouping can speak of good “camaraderie” over the years as it aims to improve the lives of citizens through the work of Commonwealth organizations, according to Knights.

53 countries now make up the Commonwealth. They used “Science,Technology and Society” as the theme for last year’s observance of Commonwealth Day.

I’m not a hater… I absolutely love Tasha, but really where is michelle, pearl christain, tarina, sandy, all the other femalw calypsonians… They too are agents of change… Not because they did not make it as far as she did… But how many of us have the guts to go on a stage… Esp when dominicans look up to one person… Doing good is never good enuff for someone esp d/ca pple… What were to happen if a woman became president would we critic it to… Give them a chance… U will see

I sense deep resentment and jealousy. One day when you have achieved what these ladies (and others) have achieved then we will say ‘well done’, and you would rightly deserve all the praises that are being bestowed on these ladies.

Dont be negative, instead think of how you to could be recognized for your achievements.

Women are the worst critics when it comes to other women. I am always proud to see another sister doing well. In my opinion it has always been ‘woman time’, but its nice to let others know that.
With all what is going on regarding child abuse, its good that someone has reminded us that we should ‘let the children be children’.

With self worth, confidence, maturity and an open mind you to could go far.

I would say that women have been coming into their own for years now in Dominica. We have at least three financial instutions headed by women, had a female prime minister, first woman of song(Ophelia), first female calypso queen (Tasha), head of Social security, and the list goes on. When statements are made, we should evalute the statement for its merit and we can form our opinions without bringing each other down. I decided to review what has been used to define change agents and came up with the following: A change agent lives in the future, not the present, is fueled by passion and inspires passion in others, has a strong ability to self motivate, must understand people. There may be a number of other ways in which change agents may be defined, but if any of the inidividuals listed above has in any way inspired anyone or group of persons to realize that they can achieve anything they put their minds to, then we can applaud them as agents of change.

I don’t think everything should be about Tasha P,their were other young women and young men who made their contribution to music and calypso.

we are to quick to put our people down,we are to quick to forget .I love T she did great, but their were others like michelle ,singing sandy,Tarina, dice, conelle phillips, come on what about these people.

sandy was the first woman to place in the finals and she did it year after year.

this young lady was a good performer.and she was never recognized.so please as one writer said we are to quick to give one set their flowers.

you all are too critical!!! nothing is ever good for we Dominicans! women achieve, and they get praised, so what is that to be critical about?!! WE SHOULD BE PROUD!!

but what is wrong with us? on what grounds are we criticizing these women? Oh my God!! Do we even think before we write? Or is it because the negative statements gets more feedback, we find solace there? Is that a way to develop self worth?..by bringing down other people?

Women, do continue to achieve! Men, I respect you….but this year Commonwealth Day, we are celebrate women as Agents of Change.

Dominicans, please be mindful, this statements- these negative statements are read by people all over the world. These statements says a lot as to who we are as a people.

why is it that we the women of Dominica, are so easy to criticize each other instead of applause each others achievements? The men rally around each other, why is it er the opposite sex can’t do the same?

@Chupes…I find you very dumb and idiotic and I pity you…wish you had more education and you would stop living in your ignorant state…think of what the one little song she sang has done…maybe her win will give your children the mind set that they are free to become anything possible!

I think they are making too much of a big deal over Tasha P’s calypso victory. Yes she performed very well and its the first time a woman won but so what? All of a sudden she is the Dominican rosa parks. Did she even write the song? I think we get excited to quickly in Dominica.
