The nursing community here will soon welcome 14 new nurses who recently took and passed the Regional Nursing Entrance Examinations (RENR).
Speaking to Dominica News Online, Acting Registrar of the Dominica State College, Denise Edwards, said that the students were all recent graduates of the institution’s nursing program.
“There were 14 Dominican students who sat the regional exam this year and there was 100 percent pass in the exam,” she said. “We must emphasize that the students were sitting the exam for their first time and it is 100 percent pass.”
Edwards added that the results are communicated on a pass or fail basis, therefore, it is not possible to determine which student got the highest score.
“The exams are written on the first Monday and Tuesday of October. There are two sittings, one in March and one in October, so this would have been the October sitting. The students sat the exam on the 7th and 8th of October,” she explained.
Edwards described the RENR as a licensing exam.
“Students learn nursing at school and then for them to be able to practice nursing they must be licensed with the General Nursing Council of Dominica and to get that license they must be able to pass that Regional Exam,” she explained, noting further that students are given a maximum of three attempts to pass the exam.
Edwards extended congratulations to the students who passed. “I am proud of my students and the staff at the faculty of health sciences. They are a relatively young staff most of them having completed their masters within the last two or three years,” she said.
She also made a plea to young men to take up nursing as a profession, highlighting that out of the 14 students, only two were male.
She encouraged young men to not be afraid of becoming nurses.
Congratulations to

Well, we must look for the next class of nurses, and l sincerely hope we will see more men than women. Ok, l know this is wishful thinking. But let me assure Dominicans that men in nursing is a blessing, a gift, and would serve society more than we can imagine. Yes, l did it for a number of years, and l had no regrets of giving back to society. Today, l am a psychologist and working in this field is easier because of my early years as a nurse that prepared me for the health/psychology field. Men in nursing pays well, is appreciated by society, and make nursing softer, or like some would say, gentler in health care. We all should appreciate Ms. Edwards and her team, and hope that she will get more men as time rolls on. Yes, It is tough, but it can be done. After-all, tough times are swaying men in advance programs today. To all our graduates, best wishes, and as the time, the administration swayed to you, we expect that you give back much and more. lt is what makes a good nurse. God speed to all of you.
Hats off to the newly installed nurses. I know that they have acquired a solid foundation, because that,s the institute where I started my nursing career, before moving on to the US. Thumbs up to nurse Edwards, she takes pride in her students. Nurses!!!!!! Remember patient,s care and safety is always priority.
Congratulations to all the nurses. The practicals count as well.Good luck in the real world of work!!

I would like to take the opportunity to say hearts off to the new registered nurses. You had work paid off. I would also like to say congratulations to Nurse Fontaine, Nurse Shillingford and Nurse Austrie I know you are exemplary nurses. I had the privilege of working with you all and you are great mentors and role models in this humble profession. I have no doubt that you prepared these new nurses well.
New nurses, its now your time to serve the public, with grace, humility, empathy and competence, God bless.
Very nice. Congratulations to them all. Very impressed, also, to see the method used to ensure that the nurses are well qualified (first nursing school, then regional exam, finally nursing license). A very “solid” group of competence measurement tools. nurses and teaching staff please keep up the goodwork. My hat off to you.
Health is one of the most important institutions in all societies and it must be taken seriously since one mistake could cost someone their life or detract seriously from that person’s quality of life
