389 graduate from DSC

389 students of the Dominica State College (DSC) graduated at a commencement exercise held at the Windsor Park Stadium on Monday afternoon.

This is the first time the number of students graduating exceeds three hundred.

The distribution of graduates by faculty for this year’s ceremony is as follows:

– 263 from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences;
– 54 from the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology;
– 34 from the Faculty of Education; and
– 38 from the Faculty of Health Sciences

Among the features of the ceremony was the graduation of the first eight students to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree of the Dominica State College.

Keynote speaker at the function Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Dominican Dean E. Robinson PHD, told graduates that Dominica has much to contribute to the human condition. “We need a more inclusive democratic view of knowledge itself,” he noted. “All perspectives and cultures contribute to a broad understanding of the human condition. Dominica has much to contribute in that regard and we should be confident in our ability to do that.”

He said graduates now have the opportunity to contribute to the development of Dominica. “You have the opportunity going forward  to contribute to the development of our island and to build a future that provides greater opportunities for the generation that follows,” Dr. Robinson sated.

2012 Valedictorian Denise Guye told graduates that their day of graduation is the beginning of the rest of their lives. “As this chapter closes, we open the next. While some of us will seek further education, others will seek to be professionals in their respective fields,” he said. “Whatever your endeavors may be, maintain the drive that kept you going at the Dominica State College.”

He encouraged graduates to continue pursuing their dreams and to ensure that their attitudes and diligence promote them as graduates of the Dominica State College.

Meanwhile Acting Education Minister Kelvar Darroux, told the ceremony that government will continue its program of providing scholarships to deserving students. “It is our hope that the scholarship recipients will return to Dominica on completion of their studies to make their contribution to national development,” he said.

President of Dominica, His Excellency Eliud Williams and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit were honoured guests at the ceremony.

Its really nice to c all these students graduating with honors, but d question is where are they going to find employment? is for this very reason i had to leave dominica, in 1989 i passed my common entrance exams an sad to say i could not get in to any one of the few schools that was available, some students didn’t even get their results, cause d government at d time knew there wasn’t enough schools, I had to migrate to continue my secondary education,it real depressing after u’ve worked so hard in a learning institution to hear sorry, we dont have any more space for u, or we cant hire u,i did my share of crying but i made it, hope those students will b able to land some jobs before frustration set in, good luck guys, lastly the state d country is in right now is not encouraging me to want to come back to invest or even live. dominica is under populated an is for this very reason no jobs, a man will migrate if he see d grass greener on d other side of d planet.

Reading these comments really saddens me. CONGRATULATIONS!! to you all who made it. Regardless if there are jobs in DA or not what you have accomplished will never be taken from you. Never give up hope and you never know where life might take you. Whatever you have accomplished is a stepping stone to the next thing you will be involved in. So to the Dominicans that only see “no jobs” think differently graduates because things can change. Never knew I would be living in the US, but I do. I build up on my high school diploma I received from DA to take me where I am today. GRADUATES YOUR DEGREE IS NOT A WASTE!!! Think positive and help change DA. Each one of you have the mind to begin something new in DA. You don’t have to leave your future in the Prime Minister or any else’s hand.

389 students graduate with degrees and 95% of the girls didn’t have enough common sense to know that they shouldn’t wear EXTRA high heels to such a lengthy function!!! It was so embarrassing to see the girls struggling to walk in those heels and even worst, the one who had to be saved from falling and walked off the stage barefoot with her shoes in her hand. This ceremony was just a big joke!!!

Theme for next year “Education is not enough, education plus common sense – these are the true values to take you through life”.

you sound like a bitter uneducated person, “This ceremony was a big joke” , cuz a girl heel broke and they wore tall heels ….. stupid comment just pissed me off

Congrats to the recipients of the Richard Alport award in Agriculture and the Eugenia Elwin Award in Nursing. These two great educators (who both passed away last year)contribution to education will be greatly missed and their legacy will live.

The D.S.C. having it’s graduation in October. Why not the same time with the other schools?.If you are residing overseas, and have two children graduating from secondary school in early july and another from D.S.C. this is a problem,I think the timing should change.

Because we are not just another school. We ARE Dominica’s primary tertiary education institution and our graduates need their own limelight.

Additionally our school year ends at the end of July unlike the high schools!

Also a great opportunity to be part of Independence celebrations and graduation.

this is done to accommodate more students to graduate. if you missing a few courses to graduate, you get a chance to do it during summer semester so you won’t have to come back the following year and wait another whole year to graduate.

    • Sum1 who kno her 2!!
      October 17, 2012

I sure they would have no problem coming down for carnival and then WCMF! Graduation is in October to facilitate more students. There is a summer semester that allows students to complete their courses instead of coming back the next year. This is especially helpful for double and triple majors.

The only firm in Dominica that is hiring is Security Guard. I am surprise out of the 389 that graduated from the DSC, no one graduated from the faculty of National Security Guard. The fact is, Skerrit and his incompetent team cannot create jobs for the people while during their watch the crime rate has increased so significantly, and everyone seems to have a machine gun, getting people trained for security guard is a must!

  17. Great! Now what!

The nice looking girls will get a job in govt or in some places where someone know them, and they will have to work plenty late nights.

the fellas will ketch their before either migrating or ending up on DNO for some creative reasons trying to make a coin.

the not so good looking girls will end up going to china, morocco and wherever else they can pack them off and claim them aiding ‘development’.

Welcome to our national employment strategy.

I wondered what was going threw the mind of the controversial President as he sat listening to the speeches and observing the young men and women receiving their graduation certificates.I also wondered what was going on in the mind of the controversial Prime Minister as he sat with smiles on his dimpled face and witnessed the 389 graduates beautifully dressed shaking hands and very happy at their achievements. I wondered if he asked himself what have I prepared for these young people in terms of jobs.I wondered if he told himself shouldn’t I have taken the $27m and instead of building a president palace use the money to create opportunities for atleast some of these 389 young people and others.I wondered if he told himself that something must be done quickly to avoid an avalance of these young people walking up the steps of the red clinic.I also wondered if he even cared.

Doc Love what about you in the ‘Private’ sector create such jobs??

When i graduated from secondary school in the 80s’ only 80 to 150 graduated from college with GCE ‘A’ Levels, whilst over 500 of us graduated from high school. It was very, very hard to get secondary and tertiary education, now there are great opportunities for all and instead of bigging up the govt you talking about they creating jobs?

I had to run England and that was in the 80s’ so what is yuor point really?

All you ppl must stop that foolish politics and appreciate something when it is good!!!

It is always a question when persons graduate what are they going to do not only in Dca all over the world so stop that narrow-minded attitude, luckily the rest of the world don’t read these rubbish!!!

        October 16, 2012

@Joe you are the one playing politics because doc.love has not told any lie. you dominicans are toooooooo hypocrite . that is why we are moving backwards. be logical; if the government is not making any effort for us to have some production taking place in this country, where will the jobs come from?????? can you tell me any country that is FULLY dependent on imports that has a boosting economy?????????????if you can answer this then I will rest my case

    – 263 from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; (mmmmmm?………you mean like sociology, psychology and every other ‘ology’ that will get them no where fast in DA?)

    – 54 from the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology; (The field where Dominicans could be used has a dwindling graduate number. I guess the Chinese will in come in and take over technology. Then DA people will cry the Chinese taking their jobs) Surrrre!
    – 34 from the Faculty of Education; and
    – 38 from the Faculty of Health Sciences

Does Skerro have a job for each of those 389 graduates? I guess he praying he can convince some of them to break the bank to go in the holes of Midwestern trailer park and Grambling back country state University.

    Dominica is in the gutters

    • huh?
      October 16, 2012

Arts and sciences also includes people in physics, biology, etc who go into fields such as medicine, and engineering. Why stop at DSC instead of pursuing their careers. And incidentally its not the prime minister that should come up with jobs it the private sector. Unless you want communism because for your information its only in a communist system that the government provides jobs.

      • bwa kwaieb
        October 16, 2012

I wasn’t speaking about Physics or Biology. Break down the numbers how many from 263 are doing physics or biology? I bet you’ll find more in sociology, psych ….. Will all of those have opportunities to succeed elsewhere? Obama is running for president and the biggest issue with his campaign is job creation. USA is a democratic republic not communist yet people still ask “where are the jobs?” So why do you find it necessary to misrepresent my point by introducing the word communism in your response to me? I know you Dominicans love to embellish and misrepresent but it gives you know right to sound of on things you don’t understand.

I know where I’m stuck at this moment 15 floors above the ground in warm air. I might be wasting a lot of time responding to your comment but here I’m still getting paid. Btw, your grammar is stuck in the gutters. Why do you need to type in caps? Only vulgar people do so.

Huh is such a good name for you. More 80% of these students in the Faculty of Science graduated from the business (tourism, accounting, economics, business admin, admin office assistants) and science (bio, physics, chem, geography, comptuter science) fields. The ology students you speak of are usually in the minority but are just as important. But I am sure like most of the people here you know nothing about the college and did not attend the graduation. I sincerely hope no psychology major will have to help you deal with your obvious issues when you get a breakdown. Look out they may be the future Dr Benjis

Mhmm….maybe now they can go and get themselves to work…help the government out instead of sitting on the steps of people houses all day long

  28. October 15, 2012

Congratulations to all those who ran the race to the end! This new number of 389 leaves me with mixed feelings for the following reasons:

    1. Young people understand the need to educate themselves and that is very good. Keep it up folks!

    2. However, the next question is, what next? Is there a future for these young people in Dominica? I have a feeling that the majority of them are either working on their passport and visa so they could migrate, while others especially the 38 from the faculty health sciences will get some training in nursing until they are able to move to greener pasture especially with a government that cannot think of ways to create sustainable employment for them. So yes, good they graduated but sad Dominica is on the verge of losing more young people.
