Deputy Principal of UWI Open Campus Professor Vivian Roberts

51 students of the University of the West Indies Open Campus graduated Thursday with qualifications in various areas of studies.

Deputy Principal of UWI Open Campus Professor Vivian Roberts told graduates that they should have gained several ideal qualities as graduates of the university.

“Are you able to speak standard English well enough that persons from other countries and other cultures and understand you clearly? Does your non verbal communication enhance or get in the way of the message you want to convey? Are you a leader from whatever position you occupy?” she said.

Professor Roberts said further that UWI graduates should also have the qualities of humility and high ethical standards.

Six individuals received Masters Degree in education, 14 received bachelors of Science and social sciences, nine graduated with bachelors in education and seven with bachelors in nursing.

Two individuals received executive diploma in management and 13 graduated with certificates in early childhood education.

Meanwhile valedictorian for the 2010 class has called for unity among Caribbean nations.

Addressing the graduation ceremony, Daren Pinard told his counterparts they must work collaboratively for the “good of the region”.

He emphasized that unity will strengthen the voices of individual member states of the Caribbean community.

“We must see the waters that separate us as serving to enhance our natural beauty, and not as a dividing factor. We must transform ourselves into Caribbean nationals, one country one nation and work together for the collective good of the region. This is an imperative,” Pinard stressed.
