965 students write Grade Six National Assessment

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will administer the annual Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) on Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15, 2018.

This year, 965 students, 475 girls, and 490 boys are set to write the exams.

This number represents a 4% decrease from last year when 1010 students sat the exams.

The examinations are scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. with an assembly at 7:45 at 52 centers around the island.

On day one, students will be tested in Language Arts and Social Studies, while on day two; Mathematics and Science will be administered.

With the exception of Language Arts, all exams will be single multiple-choice papers.

The Language Arts examination will consist of two (2) components; a sixty (60) item multiple-choice paper and a composition paper.

The G6NA was pushed back by two weeks in an effort to help facilitate schools which lost instructional time as a result of the passage of Hurricane Maria in September 2017.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development advises parents that they are not allowed at testing centers while the examinations are in progress.

I’m pretty sure when I wrote the Common Entrance in 1997, almost 1500 students sat it. Damn the population just keeps on dropping.
Also, for the people who say everyone should automatically enter high school- that’s BS. Everyone can’t be lawyers an doctors. We need the GSP program back so kids who lack interest in books can work with their hands. In the long run they are the ones who become the foundation of a civil society- the mechanics, electricians, capainters, masons etc. we now live in a country where these skill sets are rare, and those who work in these fields are mostly incompetent.

I support the concept of a national assessment but all the students should be given an opportunity to attend high school. Thus, we should eliminate Forms 1 thru 3 at the primary school level and shift those resources to high schools. Also, all the text books should be funded by the ministry of education and remain the property of the various schools. -Former teacher at St. Joseph Primary School.

DNO – Isn’t the heading wrong? It says that “965 students write Grade Six National Assessment.” This way it is saying that they wrote the exam already. Shouldn’t the heading say “965 students will write Grade Six National Assessment.” Just saying!

My views on the Common Entrance examination have not changed.

My feelings are summed up in a DNO commentary that I wrote this time last year. It was titled: Life Beyond Common Entrance.
