Dominicans continue to make headway in the region and around the world through academics and other facets of life.
This is evident in the achievements and continued forward thrust of former St. Mary’s Academy student Francis Smith.
Smith graduated from high school here in June 2005 with outstanding achievements in his O-Levels exams, securing 11 passes. The education ministry also reportedly recognized him for his success at the CXC exams where he got eight grade ones and one grade two.
Currently an electrical engineering senior at the Grove School of Engineering of The City College of New York (CUNY), Smith recently participated in the International Research Experience for Students (IRES) Program at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH University) in Stockholm, Sweden.
The 10-week project that was held over the summer allowed the Nature Island scholar the opportunity to explore his imaginative skills in his field of study and make his mark in the development of Plasmonic Integrated Circuits (PICs).
On the CCNY website, Smith speaks of his experiences in Sweden, what he learned, why he went and most importantly, what he intents to do with the knowledge and skills he gathered.
“I believed that partaking in an international research experience would enable me to free myself from the comfort zone under my mentor and graduate student…” he said.
Aside from his academic advancements outside of Dominica and the United States, Smith continues to make his mark behind the borders of the places he calls home, having listed in the 2010 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges on pages 87 and 576.
From boy to man, Francis!
