With the belief that music is powerful and can influence the action and behavior of anyone, the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit has organized the first ever Primary School Anti-Drug Song Competition.
This morning, 12 primary schools have gathered at the Public Service Union to showcase their talent and compete for the premier spot in the competition. The event is expected to go until 1 p.m.
“I hope that the message that you’re bringing through your song will continue to enlighten you and continue to enlighten your peers,” Director of the Unit Jacinta Bannis told the students before the competition heated up.
Drug Abuse Prevention Unit officer for the East/South East, Leandra Cuffy, told the gathering: “It is one of the ways that we promote alternatives to health and we believe that through song, messages can reach people far and wide. We believe that music is powerful and lyrics that make up songs that people sing can definitely influence actions and behaviors.”
Each participating school will be presented with a CD of the songs of the competition and have been promised the support of the Unit.
A special panel of judges – all musicians – include musician Fred Nicholas, Pearl Christian and Simeon Joseph.
The winner and prizes are expected to be announced at the close of the competition.
Participating schools include the Grand Fond, Campbell, Castle Bruce and Pioneer Preparatory schools. The Giraudel and Massacre primary schools are also competing.
