Chief Education Officer Stephen Hyacinth told teachers that the Biennial Excellence in Teaching Awards should be a means of encouragement for them to strive for excellence.
“It is one strategies to publicly recognize the talents of our exemplary teachers,” he said while addressing the 2nd awards ceremony of this kind at the Arawak House of Culture last week.
He said it sets the standards and expectation for all teachers at all levels.
“It makes bold the statement that the kind of teachers we require at all our schools are not jokers, time wasters, complacent and uncaring, but excellent and good teachers. This initiative is grounded in the belief that what happens in the classroom is of vital importance to improving the educational outcome, and that effective teachers are not only desirable, but important,” Hyacinth stated.
Hyacinth has also called upon teachers to work with excellence.
“We believe that in our quest to achieve education for all, we require a cadre of excellent teacher at our schools … good teachers teach well and we know a good teacher when we meet one. Students long after they leave school can tell you the name of teachers who impacted their lives,” he added.
The event was held in partnership with the National Bank of Dominica.
