Over 30 students attending the Christian Union Pre-School in Goodwill on Friday dressed in attires that reflected a possible career path in the future.
They came dressed as farmers, musicians, magistrates, firemen, among others, for Career Day, which according to principal, Joan Paul, was designed to allow students to visualize their future plans.
“Every year we have Career Day just to let the children have a feeling of being somebody, having their mind focused on being something after school,” she explained. “It is a time where the children dress in things they would like to do when they grow up as doctors, nurses, firemen, farmers, bakers.”
She said the day was also designed to let the students know that one day they will grow up to be adults and they must be ‘responsible adults.’
Paul cautioned parents to avoid dictating to their children what they want them to become but instead “it should be what the children want.”
“You know some times the parents do not want the children to be farmers and bakers … everybody wants their children to be nurses, doctors, lawyers, but as parents we cannot choose for our children. We can lead them in the right way but we cannot choose. That is something they have to study and decide for their selves at a certain age,” she stated.
Four-year-old Andell Charles told DNO that he wanted to become a fireman “to put out fires and make some money,” while Kerdell Williams, also four, said he wanted to be a magistrate.
One student came dressed as a farmer but later changed his mind and said he wanted to be a policeman instead.

Great effort to the staff and parents of Christian Union Pre School. Continue to strive throughout excellence.
I understand that you celebrate “Career Day” in different schools and at various levels. When I saw this at Pre-School it grabbed my attention and I clicked on.
I remembered my school days in Canada and I suddenly realized we heard nothing about careers or “what we wanted to be” until we hit grade seven of eight. I’m sitting here wondering what a difference it could have made if our educators had started us thinking about this much earlier. I am sure many of us with proper guidance would have taken school more seriously, and chosen extra curricular activities and planned our reading etc. around what we wanted to be.
At grade six or seven most of us had given very little thought to our future “career”. I now think having a goal – even if it changed later any number of times – would have been a great motivation.
Career Day in Pre-School? Terrific idea!
The pictures are beautiful. This is the future of Dominica.
God bless all of you who work with the children. They are your most valuable resource! And God bless the parents who push them forward!
Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.
Thanks for sharing this. It is encouraging to know that we are still promoting super high standards in early childhood education. Keep up the good work Ms Paul and Co.
Was looking for school for my son when another parent told me about the Good will Christian Union Pre School. I went in and meet with the teacher Mrs. Augustine who assisted me with the information I was looking for. Very nice teacher. At that point I knew that was the school I wanted my son to attend. They are doing a very good job and the way in which they interact with the students is just amazing. Thanks to you all. keep up the good work. Wonderful teachers. Job well done.
The Goodwill Christian Union Pre school has been in existence for a number of years. It is a very good school, and the teachers Mrs. Augustine, Mrs Fontaine and the Principal Mrs. Joan Paul are doing a tremendous job.Continue to do what you are doing. Hats off to you guys.
Well look health care professionals LOL. So cute!
Thanks to DNO for recognizing the C.U.P.S Pre-School. Looks Lovely but the person who took them off shouldn’t have posted the blury ones. The Future begins with them. Thanks to the teachers for doing such a wonderful job with the students. God bless you all
They are so cute. may God continue to guide and bless them so they can indeed reach their goals in the future
dress them up and doh spend quality time with them….refuse to guide them and teach them….scolding them when they do wrong is not teaching them anything….I pray that the little ones grow up with the fear of
god in their heart and they have a t least one adult in their life that they can go to for advise when they need advise and direction….
