Concerns over the nation’s youth

Delroy Williams

Two youth leaders have expressed concern over the state of the nation’s youth after an explicit video involving local teenage girls surfaced on the internet recently.

Youth activist, Delroy Williams, believes enough is not being done to teach the youth about sex while CARICOM Ambassador, Natasha Jervier, is worried over some of the activities young people are getting involved in.

“Parents should be willing enough and open enough to ‘discuss’ sex and sexuality with their children,” Williams told Dominica News Online.  “And I put discuss in inverted commas because a lot of what we think is discussion in Caribbean families is actually a shouting, blaming game,” he said.

He urged society to look at the need to address sex and sexuality in more palatable ways so that the message is driven and form part of the knowledge, attitudes and practice of the population.

He also questioned the moral and ethical values being taught to children.

When asked about the video itself, Williams said the young girls in it were clearly taken advantage of and were “victims of their own naivety and eagerness to please.”

Williams said as a society, Dominica should look into ways of curbing juvenile crime, “identify warning signs and create help-desks for people who have been victims or even perpetrators of such crimes.”

Natasha Jervier

Meanwhile Natasha Jervier is worried about some of the activities that young people are getting involved in.

Jervier stated that young people are influenced by some adults who do not set the right example and most of them are taken advantage of. She noted that adults have a responsibility to protect the youth since they are the future leaders.

“I agree with Mrs. (Delia) Weekes when she said that the age of consent needs to change because at 16 you cannot do anything that an adult can such as vote and get a license which means that at that age you are not mature enough to take certain decisions especially to give consent to sex,” she told Dominica News Online.

Jervier continued, “Even at that age, a 16-year-old may not be able to handle the responsibilities that come with being sexually active so it should be changed to a more mature age when they can consciously make more mature decisions.”

She called on parents to educate their children and provide good examples for them.

She added that young people themselves should stand against illegal actions and provide support to their peers.

Concern for the state of our youth is only the beginning, there must a re-emergence of the presence of the National Youth Council to advocate for greater attention to our children and youth. The NYC in my humble opinion is sleeping, although its efforts no matter how noble would not prevent some young people to be taken advantage of or that some will develop iresponsible behaviour, yet an effective NYC means a powerful voice to keep the nation and Government focused on the needs of young people.
Why is the NYC so silent on national issues?

Why are we still trying to reform society with the teachings of the Lord without the Lord of teh teachings. Mrs Weeks and Natasha whom i believe has a christian background, knows that we are in a battle against spiritual forces here. Why don’t they take the time to educate the public also, on fornication and adultery and how it affect our realtionshhip with firstly, God, and our present and future spouses. We always seem to leave God out of the picture and try to do things on our own because we want to get the praise and glory which God alone deserves. In order to succeed, we must incoperate biblical teachings in our efforts. I am wondering what day it will be, and if there will ever be a day, when our government, passes a law, “No sexual intercourse before marriage”.

I think we Dominicans are quickly making a place for ourselves in the world and in history as GREAT TALKERS! Every little thing that happens, we hurry ourselves to talk our heads off, and SHOUT out to leaders and administrators to MAKE A STATEMENT! MAKE A STATEMENT! Honestly, I prefer the approach of Ms. Delia Cuffy-Weekes. You feel strongly about something, GET OFF YOUR LAURELS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Making statement and hiding behind our phones and computers to talk our heads off anonymously make absolutely NO SENSE, and definitely GET US NOWHERE! Just saying …

i agree dat enough is not being done but i disagree dat de age of concent needs to be increased if those lil woman not even waitng for 16 wat going to make dem wait for 18… i am 17 and at the age of 13 would not even think of going out muchless to make porn video…it is all about the mindset of these young girls…the need to get goals and have a proper mindset to carry them through their lives or else they heading for trouble

I totally agree that the age of consent should be increased to 18. Any adult male older than 18 who engages in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 18 should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; the act should be considered rape.

Its not politians nor parents to blame. Its the competiion among young teenagers. They all want expensive phones, dress to impress and leave the so called American dream, which they cant afford and television have a role in that to.So they go out there and do what ever it takes to get what they want. But there should be tougher laws inforced in order to protect them.because they fall victim to the people who take advantage of them.

Talking to the young people is just a start. It takes REAL adults to pick up the reins and lead them by example. A wise person said that whatever is done to children, they will do to society. The adults expose them to all the vices of the world and the Anericanized culture and expect them to act otherwise? Talking will only do so much. Positive ACTION is needed so much more. Good venture by the two young activists though. Take it further.

Too sad we got to this point. Those types of behaviors should surprise no one. The nation has turn away from GOD!!!!

Deuteronomy 29:18 – Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.

Joshua 24:20 – If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”

We can’t blame anyone in particular, but ourselves. All is to blame; mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters. We idolize the devil as it suits us and expects a GODLY harvest. It is all hypocritical to be upset that this is happening.

    Take heed:

Job 4:8 – As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.

Job 20:1 – The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust.

Proverbs 1:31 – They will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

The nation needs to go back to GOD!!!! Sorry, there is no other way!!!

the parents of today is the television and the internet. all the music and movies (including cartoons)of to day tell you to go out there and explore your sexuality, explore your pleasures. its OK to be gay its ok to do drugs etc. its OK as long as it pleasurable, but where do we draw the line, every thing pleasurable is not right. so until the real parents control what our children watch and hear from friends, music, internet, television etc. the problem will not be solved, cause these are the things that have the greatest influence on the youth of today.

Very strong move by the Youth.

But they must never cherry pick on issues..

The Nation is Presently Lacking Good, Honest Clean Leadership..so when Politicians on Both sides of The Fence Makes outrageous Statements the Youth Must Make it known to as well and be a Voice!

We can only clean up this Mess we are in not by Being Hypocrites and cast blind eyes to certain Things, but must be firm assertive and on the Ball With issues of Concern Across the Board in Nation Building….Hats of the Sir Alleyne & Family,Lets Hope other Families reflect on where we are as a Nation rather than water down issues of Concern!

Good point, but there are so many issues affecting and impacting Dominica that the few youth who speak out cannot address it all.

I’ve heard and seen evidence of both Delroy and Natasha addressing a number of issues. The same can be said for other young people.

My two cents: sound reaction and action on a few issues is better than running their mouth on everything. Youth, choose the issues that you feel the most passionate about, the issues on which you feel your voice will effect change, and run with it.

The rest of us need to support them and pick up the slack on the other issues.

Blame games, pointing fingers cannot solve the social and moral problems we are facing as a nation. In fact the problems we are facing are not unique to us, they are just an extension or reflection of what happens in the world around us to which we are inextricably linked through various media channels. These media channels are readily accessible to all especially the youth…they watch, listen, learn and adopt “by beholding we become changed”… there may be some parents who are negligent in the upbringing of their children, but there are many who diligently seek to teach the right values and set the right examples, yet the children choose to do otherwise. Fact is there may be many parents are doing the best with what they know but what they know is not enough to help the children in the way they need help. We definitely need a comprehensive plan to halt the social ills but more than the plan we need the will and determination to act. We need to stop the double standards…if we talk morality it has to apply to every segment of society. We cannot for instance tell children not to do somethings and at the same time in the name of culture and entertainment we act in the most vulgar and sexual degrading ways on the streets and at our entertainment shows… We cannot expect a child to respect his/her body when so many soca/calypso/dancehall/hip hop etc. move is suggestive of the opposite. Lets stop pointing fingers at groups of people and begin to educate, build, change, put in place structures that will stop the slide.

great move youth leaders,, i also urge parents to talk to their children about sexual feelings as they are in the puberty stage. they may not know how to handle these feelings they get at a certain time of month. they should know that their body is God’s temple and no one should abuse it..their is also self abuse (masturbation) we need to let our youth know how to control their bodies by keeping their minds pure and they cannot do it alone but with the help of God. we adults can testify how strong theses sexual feelings come..so u can imagine these chilsren these days their bodies are like adults already so most of them do not know how to keep these feelings under control and this is where the older ones take advantage of them. parents we know what it is so let us not avoid them from going thru this by preparing them cause we already know once you get sex once u want it all the time..trust me..one got to be really strong in mind to resist. that is y the good Lord designed sex for marriage. but man has change that way back then..we can make a difference by training our children. donot worry about what society thinks but let us do what God words say. We can do it if we set our minds to.

‘once you get sex once’ what i mean is the whole line with it the touching rubbing etc. once one explores those sweet feelings he/she will want more once she/he feels good. so let us educate them before hand. we have alot of others who have not reached that far so let us educate them before it is too late.

So what are the ‘thumbs down’ for? Is it for calling out those scum bags who prey on young girls? Is it because some of us know that these things do happen and because of lawlessness these men get away with it? Yes, there is promiscuity among young people but when grown men and those in authority (that’s especially where the imbalance of power comes in)engage in adult relationship with young girls that’s when we must speak up? Young people having sex with their peers is another issue. We much teach them to save themselves if not for marriage but when they are mature enough as not everyone will get married. Whether by choice or not as this is the world we live in today. What my frustration is about is also people blaming the young girls and the men are getting a free pass. That’s what I’m pissed about. I am a parent of a ‘tween’ daughter and even if I do not live in D/ca this is an issue for every girl everywhere. So if I get thumbs down for saying there are those in authority who prey on young girls I do not care. If I say parents have to speak to their children at a very young age about respecting their bodies and teaching the boys especially to respect women as they grow up, I really don’t care with those who don’t agree with that sentiment but I do know that someone who is a parent will agree with me. Low self esteem is a major issue that young women face these days all around the globe. So as a woman, and a mother of a little girl, I will speak up and tell the authorities to do what they must to protect our children for the future of our country. I rest my case!

    January 11, 2013

Certainly! I believe that if our children know how special they are, and are taught their values from a young age; not only by their parents but also at school, it will make a difference with the decisions they make in the future. Teaching them to fear God also has a lot to do with the way they behave. A parent who makes their child fear them will expect that child do do wrong in their absence, but letting that child fear God, with the knowledge that he sees and hears everything is a different situation.

    • 18
      January 11, 2013

Yes, I agree 100%. Part of the problem is that some parents turn a blind eye to such situations unless something publicly embarrassing happens. Teaching children correctly makes it very likely (if not ensures) that they make responsible decisions, whether or not the parents are present or the age of consent is raised.

Have you ever wondered that the things which come to light now always existed. Only now through technology we get a better glimpse. The are many grand parents, parents out there now who did these same things and more. The only difference is the media options.

I am not saying in anyway what was done is correct but we must realize that the problem need to be hit from deep down in the root. Generations before take pride in telling stories to others of things they did. They may not tell there family but it makes a circle back to the next generation. Imagine a 16 year old hearing about stuff done 30/40 years ago by some of us and decides to do one better.

we need to strengthen our family, school and church systems in this country.

I couldn’t agree more with Delroy and Ms. Jervier. This is the point I made in my comments on this very same issue. Parents have to talk to their daughters at a very early age about sex, sexuality and their bodies. Age appropriate, of course. Our daughters must understand how precious their bodies are; that they can’t allow anyone to abuse their bodies under any circumstances. Our sons need to be taught also at a young age to respect women. Fathers have got to step up! As I said before, I do not need to see this video to know that these young girls were taken advantage of. This is child pornography and I hope that the authorities have not stop investigating this matter. We cannot blame the victim. Too many men are getting away with these crimes. Where is the law to protect our children?
I’ve said it before and I will say it again; the policemen and teachers must stop these inappropriate relationships that they are having with these young girls. I know what I am talking about. I am glad to see another contributor here voiced his concerns as well. I saw this going on when I was in HS over 20 yrs ago. Teacher dating student, police officer dating HS student, police officer impregnating a HS student (now that’s what I know for sure) and the authorities (Principal including) let that slide by.I am so mad right now. This is one of the times I will say to follow the US lead on this issue and prosecute these men. There is an imbalance of power. Yes, raise the age level so this might deter those scum bags. I am so mad.

ALSO keep in mind that in 2007-2008 there were more female teacher male student relationships in the school system in Dominica. Not sure what happened after that. These things are two sided affairs now.

How can the adults teach their children about morals when they themselves don’t have? Fornication, promiscuity, affairs in marriage all rampant in our society. Of the babies born at pmh when i had mine i was the only married person. Now is the promotion of homosexuality. Some of those school children are the ones who flirt with those much older men. Where do we start. Let us lay down all the problems and tackle them one by one. A big problem is we are trying to make wrong right and right wrong. I say turn back to God. I still take full responsibility for my behavior.. I can say that maybe if I had better parents…I would not have been in certain places because life at my home was so unbearable….or I would not have been so frustrated and be be Abe to make better decisions…but I cannot see myself not taking the ultimate responsibility for my actions..especially regarding sex…

I’d say that your explanation itself provides the answer to why these KIDS should be protected. It was your mental and emotional state that got you to do these things. Perhaps if you had someone to protect you, you wouldn’t have done what you did.

Maybe if there were better laws, or the ones which are already enacted, were enforced properly, then you may have been protected.

Because you are older now, and more mature you are accepting responsiblity. But in all honesty, can you say that in your state back then – you were MATURE enough and SOUND enough of mind to have comprehended or controlled your actions?

NO – that’s why we need to protect our kids… and help those who maybe goign through situations like yours.

Taken advantage of, naivity, eager to please or just promiscuous, sometimes its just promiscouity, I’ve seen 15 year olds who think highly of themselves…who just like to sleep around….as we say it in Dominica…they like man…..
Sometimes it is because of low self esteem and other factors but even if they are at risk for unhealthy behavior s in the end they made they decision and must accept responsibility for their actions

I agree with you 100%, these kids are not stupid …they know what they are doing is wrong…however they put themselves in situations that they can’t always get themselves out of. Some parents are to be blamed and so are some of those children.

Accepting responsiblity and being responsible are too different things.

Even if they accepted responsiblity, what’s the purpose of that? What can it help when their situations are still the sae – they are not mature enough mentally and emotionally to handle certain situations?

You know personally that because of certain situations you may not be able to control your actions because althought you may know they are wrong, your mental and emotional state are imbalanced and you react in negative ways to seek attention.

no time. no child who thinks highly of them selves as u say would sleep around with other man, cuz u cannot think highly of your self and still have a low self esteem that is contradicting. there are kids who know better and may risk the chance but at the end of the day u have look at the big picture that the more children u educate about sex u will have a lesser percentage of children indulging in sexual activites where as u dont educate them then u have an increase in sexual activities among children

This issue was discussed briefly on D.B.S radio, however I will make the following points. It is regrettable that people who do not know any better accused the best man who ever walked the face of the earth Muhammad peace be upon him of Pedophilia due to his marriage to ‘Aa’ishah at the age of 9.

    1. Pedophilia involves adults taking advantage of children by purchasing sexual favors from them. British and German sex tourists being caught in Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philippines are not seeking marriage but only sex from child prostitutes or impoverished people willing to give their children away for a few pennies.

    2. The age of consent for women set in the west varies from 14 to 18. These ages were arrived at by democratic vote and have no actual relationship to the woman’s ability or inability for sexual relations for marriage. Consequently, what is considered legal sex in France may be considered rape in England.

    3. Islam sets the age of marriage at puberty, as it is the natural dividing line between childhood and adulthood. Menstruation indicates that a young girl has reached childbearing age. This age may vary from country to country, but is is discernable and not arbitrary.

    4. Most societies around the world sanctioned child marriages up until this century. It was not introduced by Islam but regulated.

    5. Islam stipulates that a girl or boy married before puberty will not live with their spouse until they have attained puberty. Furthermore, they have the right to cancel or proceed with the marriage when they reach puberty.

    6. ‘Aa’ishah was seven when she was married off to the Prophet (p) and she came to live with him when she reached puberty at nine.

    7. Women abused as children usually have difficult times coping as adults. They are often unstable and psychologically handicapped. ‘Aa’ishah became the leading female scholar of her time and conveyed to the next generation an enormous body of Islamic law. She was known to be the fourth most prolific narrator of the Prophetic traditions of all of the Prophet’s followers.

Lastly, may Allah guide those who are sincere about understanding Islam. Ameen. Remember Oh Dominicans, anyone who dies in a state other than Islam it will never be accepted of him and in the hereafter he will be of the losers. (Noble Quran).

Muslim Always, give up. There is NO WAY in heaven, on earth or under the Earth that anyone, even the great Allah himself can consider an 11 year old an adult because she menstruates. That’s just bull. If Mohammed married a child, he was a paedophile. There is no way around it.

So you have no problems with having sex with a once she had her period. Once you supposedly marry her. Sounds like a pedophile to me. Even though the child has her first menstrual cycle it does not mean that she is mentally and physically ready for child bearing. she is still developing in every way. And if that is the type of bs you muslims are putting forward as religion i can’t help but see why allot of people think this is an insane religion

Parents certainly have to be more open and sex and relationships should be taught and spoken openly in the schools…children ask questions, answer them as best as you can…and the Law should be totally enforced to the max…

Those young people who survive this torment and torture of this world–whether in Dominica or elsewhere–will be the lucky ones.

For these kinds of abuse have already gone too far, it like children are born into it; parents are like the deaf and the blind–the latter asking the first do you see what I hear.

Those who take on the responsibility of leadership, have no idea what discipline and training is about and so we have the blind leading the blind–only God’s compassion will make a difference for survival, but then society do not know who He is–especially the young people of today.

The girls weren’t being taken advantage of, they were just doing what they wanted. Why is there so much concern being placed on the youth, when the adults around the country are the exact way (even worse).

I’m sure this is somehow going to be directed at the government for “not doing enough”, but the issue stems from the lack of proper parenting apparent throughout the island. We need people to stop being so ghetto, and actually have morals. It’s not all about gossip and nonsense, its about pushing ourselves forward so we can do more and more.

    • January 11, 2013

u are saying that too much emphasis is being focused on the youths because adults exhibit the same behaviour. at the end of the day u have to break the chain or cycle of this. the same adults we are accusing of behaving in the same way suppose they were once victims and nobody never spoke to them and help them and this trend keeps on repeating u must draw the line somewhere. if u dont see the need to educate our girls and boys about sex then you dont care at all about their future. u are saying that this cycle should be repeated and nothing should be done to curb the problem. everybody situation is not the same,

Well said Mr. Williams and Ms. Jervier. The youth of Dominica like all other countries needs to be nurtured so that they may mature into positive well rounded individuals. Presently, young people are being abused in so many ways by other youth and adults. Also adults need to refrain from blaming and pointing fingers at young people for everything that goes wrong in this country, remember you are the role models so many times their actions are based on what they learn from you the adults. Close the generation gap and unite for a better DOMINICA.

I totally agree with Delroy Williams. Dominica is lawless so protecting our youths is a difficult task. I’m 37 and when I was in high school the police officers and teachers were dating 17 and 18 year olds. Today, they are dating even younger girls and nothing is being said or done about that. We really need to educate our youth about sex and relationships.

Imagine a 16 year old hearing about stuff done 30 years ago by some of us and decides to do one better.

we need to strengthen our family, school and church systems in this country.

Is it really our youth that needs to be educated, or that the perpertrators be taken to task?

what about the politicians and those in high authorities, not only police and teachers, the bus drivers, vehicle owners, those visiting from the USA etc, they are doing the same, exploiting the young girls for jobs, cell phones, fake Gucci etc

Some of the young girls in Dominica all what they are seeing the girls outside Dominica have they want to have it

What they need to know is that, in the USA, Canada, UK etc, the young girls are going to school, colleges, universities and they do have part=time jobs at Mac Donald, KFC, etc, some of them are the ones working to pay off their cars loans, college and universities loans etc, some of them young girls in DA a greedy, nothing is free, many of the young girls themselves their mother are single parent and we all know what some single mothers do in DA, children learn what they see ok

      • January 11, 2013

u cannot compare dominican youths we those of the states and say becuz the can afford money or still go to a good school that it is right for them to be sexually exploited. yes tv and internet and what we see from other cultures does impact either positvely or negatively on our youths so at the end of the day the responsiblity to educate is still our obligation and we cant deny that.
