A student from the Concord Primary School has topped the Grade Six Assessment Exams.

Louis Riviere outperformed students from across the island to make it to the top.

There was a tie for second place with Kodie Jean Jacques of the Convent Prep and Gianni George of the St. Martin Primary School occupying that position.

Kaila-Ann Guiste of the St. Martin Primary School took the fourth place position while Makayla Bedneau of the Salisbury Primary School and Shalian Shaw of the St. Martin School also tied for fifth place.

There was no third place position.

Riviere is currently out of state but DNO spoke to his teacher, Sandra Bruno, who described him as “a focused, hard-working and intelligent boy.”

“He is a very curious and inquisitive student,” she said. “These are the hallmarks of a student who wants to learn.”

She said Lious’ mother has been very supportive and that has helped him a lot in attaining the top grade.

Bruno said she was elated when she heard her of student’s achievement. “I jumped up,” she said.”The words could not come out of my mouth. It’s a reward for hard work”

I LOVE sT. mARTIN SCHOOL. wHY IS IT IS only the 6-1 who does well. I thnk it is time to change that teacher in 6-2. Come on every year is the same thing. Alas as for the 6-3.

My daughter got a bursary three years ago fron 6-2 and it is because I sent her to the 6-1 teacher for classes. this is a shame. Give that teacher a break

CONGRATULATIONS to the Roseau Primary School on your students outstanding performance at the GSAT examinations. The General public will stop be criticising the ROSEAU PRIMARY SCHOOL. They outshine the high and mighty schools around. As the gold in your uniform represents” TO SHINE ABOVE ALL”. you all really REPRESENT. Don’t give up you have a very vibrant PRINCIPAL Ms Gretta Roberts. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU AND THE ENTIRE STAFF. Love you all.

  13. My two cents
    June 24, 2013

I don’t want to take away from the congratulatory messages. The students who excelled deserve to be congratulated because in our education system today they are a dime a dozen. It appears that the only times in this age that some parents care about their children’s education are 1. First day of school especially for k and 2. Grade 6. In between some parents ould not give 2pence n then complain about what a teacher does or doesn’t do. Parents when we give our child homework, we really want them to it. We wnt thm to fo projects and we want them to study and revise. Please parents your children’s education at as much my job, as it is yours.
At the nd of it all, allwe ever have are our names , good or bad and our education.

Did the students sit the exams this year? Year after year I keep hearing nothing about our schools in the area.

    Do these schools have supervisors?

DNO you are confusing your readers even further by stating there was no 3rd place. Because of the tie, there is an automatic jump to 4th. Likewise in the case of the tie for the 5th place position.

Sometimes I wonder about us you know! And we always broadcast our ignorance with so much confidence asking silly questions about why is there no 3rd place when you clearly read there was a tie for 2nd.

    • no math expert but!
      June 24, 2013

      I am no math expert: 100% = 1st place
      2 persons 98% = 2nd place
      2 persons 95% = 3rd place
Next person 90% = 4th place etc etc.

How the 3rd place disappear so huh!!!!!!

    • June 24, 2013

A tie means that two students obtained the same score; however, to say there were NO THIRD PLACE is outrageous. I think that the FOURTH place student is the THIRD PLACE WINNER.

    • Annonymous Reader
      June 25, 2013

I think people are confused because there should not have been a fifth place either. The rule is after a tie for a position you have to skip the next position. so you end covering the correct number of positions.

  35. June 24, 2013

that`s good for the concord primary school to come out on top and that should be a motivation for any other primary school to come out on top next year.

Correct me if I’m wrong but is there some sort of bias going on here? Please do better.

      June 24, 2013

Simply, If one school have 10 children and one of the pupil came 1st scholarship out of the 10 but no others and another school with 20 pupils but gets 15 scholarship, which school do you think is the top?

    • eh?
      June 24, 2013

OMG GOD! Read and understand! The child is out of state. And Concord school is the 2nd top performing school. The Top performer is from the Concord School. Two different things. DNO fix your headline though.

You people are exasperating in your inability to read carefully AND comprehend!!!!! Jesus Cristo!

    • STILL
      June 24, 2013

First the article clearly stated that he is currently out of state so how would they take his pic. And secondly having the top performer does not mean that the school performed the best.it is all based on the number of students and the grades of all the students who sat the exam.

    • Charlottville
      June 24, 2013

Eh beh you eat all your basic maths class money. Forget typing, start with algebra and end on statistics. Before you wet yourself with barvey, Concord may have the top student i.e no ONE SCHOLAR, however by way of tabulation in terms of the number of students who wrote the exams, top scores attained, and combined numerical value Pioneer or any other school could edge them. That is the most basic explanation I can give your simple mind, hopefully you will grasp it. I just don’t know what to do with some of you pitiful Dominicans who just act up for no reason, and prove how dunce you are in the process. Sakway toneh man. Now you learn to do better and stop getting high on ignorance because it’s free.

CORRECTION….Louis Riviere is currently out of the island. I’m assuming he is in some other country with or without his family so they are not able to provide any photos of him.
If the ratio of passes in one school is higher than another, it does not matter whether the top student is from the school with the fewer passes. The school with the most passes will be placed first. It said the “top performing schools’ not the top performing student.

Great job to all. These quotes, “He is a very curious and inquisitive student,” …. “These are the hallmarks of a student who wants to learn,” I find particular poignant for our time. This is a teacher I’d want to dialogue with and learn a heck of a lot more about her insights on what makes for a successful student. She placed her finger on the one thing that continues to baffle me as I observe today’s youth. Too many seem incurious about the world around them.

These astounding results goes to show that it is not the school house that determines how well you do. It’s what goes on inside the school house that matters.

When we are paid a decent salary we will work. I teaching for ten years and can hardly have enough food for two weeks in my kitchen.

I have to be crediting food from farmers and the shops for me to feed my family.

Sometimes I am in the class but I am so worried about what my two children will have for dinner. I simply can’t produce under these conditions.

I think the PTA should do fund raising to give us something on the little $1,000 we getting from the government.

I hope this helps you to better understand.

I hope when it is your children’s turn and their teachers feel the same way you will be okay with it.

You can’t feed your children but you have computer and/or smart phone to post on DNO?

Why don’t you buy milk and sugar instead of the phone and computer?

No teacher gets $1,000/per month except they are extremely unqualified, and not even then.

I am also a teacher CBPS,am saying to you ,talk for your self, stop putting shame on teachers in general. My advice to you get another job that will pay you better.Question to you…if you keep going to the toilet, and you hate the tissue you use ,what will you do…not whip your…. ***** or start using a new brand?I do not even believe you are a teacher.Sorry I am pissed at you!!!!!!!

      • June 24, 2013

So, I see you just there for the money, huh…unless you are so unqualified and can’t do the job, that is the best response you can come up with. Hope you are not in grade 6 teaching people’s children.

        June 24, 2013

if you are in the system for so long get qualified, that’s when you make money providing you work well and your appraisals are good.do not use the children’s time to think of all your problems or better yet get another job!

      • Coklish
        June 25, 2013

I truly sympathise with you. Teaching is soooo frustrating and the money is so damn small. My sister used to be a teacher where she got $1,300.00 a month. She had to bring chalk, meat from her kitchen for fund raising, sugar to make juice for people children and even toilet paper for the school on her own. Why do I have to do all that for a public school on the little money that I am getting?
The school never have adequate material for effective teaching. God damn it!

      • Anonymous
        June 26, 2013

@Cocklish…but we do all that even if our children go to catholic schools and we pay school fees. We still have to contribute toilet paper and typing paper. And during fund raising we donate the food and still have to buy it back..So what’s your point?

  66. Observation
    June 24, 2013

It’s interesting to see how the article is written. Lious Riviere “managed” to outperform students from across the island to make it to the top. Is it just me or does it seem like the writer is baffled by the fact that someone from Concord Primary “managed” to top the National Assessment Exam? Are we discriminating here? I really hope not. Great job to all the top performers and the people involved in their lives.

    • Nameless
      June 24, 2013

I have to agree with you there, no need for the article to state that the pupil “managed” to outperform the others. It should simple be stated that he outperformed the others, period! Putting in the word “managed” makes it sound like it was an unexpected event…or was this really an unexpected event in the view of the writer?

It seems to me that the people are surprised that a child in a school outside Roseau would get Island Scholar… CONGRATS to Lious Riviere! You didn’t simply ‘manage’ you did THE BEST. Please get the child’s picture, DNO.

    • Yes
      June 24, 2013

Thankfully DNO changed their words. They’ve change “managed” to top to “outperformed” and “Topped”. Thanks DNO ! You’re reading.

      • Observation
        June 25, 2013

It’s really good that they fixed that. We all make mistakes or have oversights. It is written in much more positive taste right now. Great job DNO.

    June 24, 2013

Great Job to Warner Primary. I certainly know the adversities you all face in trying to educate the young children. Schools like that and the other ‘Country Schools’ are often forgotten and overlooked in the grand scheme of things when funds are allocated. The principal and teachers have to exceed expectations continuously to obtain any type of success.

    • Annonymous Reader
      June 25, 2013

HoI am elated for the parents, school and student, since they all contributed to this great success. This is proof for the many who will go the extra mile to enroll their children in so call prestigious schools. Some are not Catholics, however, they enroll their children in these Catholic schools, with the belief that these are the only institutions that secure a bright foundation for students. Mind you, these schools have achieved great results overall. The fact is a child can perform no matter the school. It is a collaborated effort. Well done Concord Primary, also, Warner Primary.
