Sev Mckenzie from the Convent Preparatory School has topped this year’s Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) Exams .
The results were announced by Education Minister Petter Saint Jean at a press conference held at the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) Building on Wednesday.
Mckenzie told the media during an interview following the announcement of the results that he felt proud of himself.
“I practiced and worked hard and feel proud of myself,” he said.
According to him a lot of his help came from his family and teachers.
When asked which school he plans to attend in the new academic year his choice was St Mary’s Academy (SMA).
He revealed also that he wants to become a scientist when he grows up.
Mckenzie’s advice to students who will be sitting the G6NA is to, “always believe you can do it.”
His mother, Bertilia Mckenzie described her son as being someone who have always been focused and very diligent.
She also mentioned that the school worked very well with Sev, not forgetting her husband and mother.
Mckenzie who is also the General Manager of DOMLEC said it was even more difficult, having to manage a Post- Maria restoration for Domlec, “and so it really took a lot of me to be able to do this.”
She further stated that Sev loves to read.
She went on to say that the secret is to, “understanding the capability of your children, addressing that, praying to your God every day and working hard.”
“You have to work with your children from Pre-School and that is the key,” Mrs. Mckenzie stated. “You have to work with your children, you have to be there for your children.”
Malaika Jno Charles of the Dublanc Primary School who placed 2nd said she was happy after receiving the results.
Part of what she said helped her to excel was spending late hours studying and to leave socializing with friends behind.
Cadel Casimir of the Grandbay Primary School placed 3rd. DNO is attempting to get an interview with him.
The fourth position went to 12-yr-old Kelanda David of the St Martin’s Primary School.
“I was really excited, but kind of expected it a little bit because of all my hard work,” she remarked.
David noted, however, that she faced challenges during preparation for the exams because of Hurricane Maria.
“Since there were no lights, I had to use flashlights to study,” she revealed.
She wishes to attend the Convent High School since it is one of the most prestigious high schools in Dominica, “and I know it can help me accomplish my goals.”
David said she wants to be a Doctor when she grows up.
David told students who will be sitting the G6NA to be focused, relaxed and put their trust in God.
“God is in control of everything so you just have to leave it up to Jesus,” she stated.
Meantime, Chidi Fabien who placed 5th said she was happy and wasn’t surprised after receiving the results.
“I studied very hard and stayed up late with my mommy and daddy to study,” she noted. “My teachers also helped.”
She wants to attend the Convent High School.
On the basis of this year’s results the government of Dominica has decided to award scholarships to all students who obtained four grade A’s or three A’s and one B, or three A’s and one C, or two A’s and two B’s. Bursaries were awarded to those students who obtained the equivalent of four B’s or better but did not qualify for the award of scholarship. 91 students were awarded scholarships and 99 were awards bursaries.

Congratulations to all the students their parents and teachers. Kudos to Mrs Alexis-Joseph of Dublanc School I know you worked very hard for your students and you have given your entire life to teaching straight out of High School years ago. You also qualified yourself over the years excellently!
That being said, I cant look at the title of top performing school without making note of the number of students in a school. If Dublanc has 7 students attempting the exams of course the probability of them all excelling is very high since it has been proven that small classes are more successful. This is in no way to diminish the efforts of Mrs Alexis-Joseph, she is a hard and dedicated Principal. I would just like the other school which more students and more challenging roles to be celebrated to in whatever way. Thanks to all our underpaid, overworked teachers and the parents who supported them. To the little ones keep up the great job and stay focused.
First congratulations to all the children. But I have to say this makes no sense 700 plus students taking this exam and all you giving people just the top 5? I mean really and no other students know what they came out. This is not okay the children need to know how they did. At least give the first 100
Give us something man
@Cyrillia…..You buying the ink for them to print 100 names? Just leave it at 5 so people will not get jealous. If you want to know who passed higher then who, just take a trip to the Ministry of Education
Nana-Lain you foolish or what? what ink you need to print name when we leave in a technologically advance world where by they can publish the information or print it for god shake due to the fact they have the resources. Educated yourself from ignorance dear..
Somebody say Sev topped cause they never went without lights.
Great job to the Mackenzie’s, they certainly worked hard and to all the students that put the effort to try their best. Congratulations
