Over seventy-five secondary school teachers on Friday participated in a School Based Assessment (SBA) workshop at the University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica.
The workshop, facilitated by the Caribbean Examinations Council, was designed to inform participants of changes to the SBA policy and enhance their knowledge base on the requirements and implementation practices for the SBA syllabus.
Facilitator Cheryl Stevens of the Western Zone Office said participants were equipped with improved assessment skills and are now better able to guide students in the selection and completion of SBA assignments.
“The council recognizes the significant role of teachers in fulfilling its mission and involves teachers in the evaluation of their students through course-work assessment,” Stevens said.
“The Caribbean Examinations Council’s mission is to provide the region with syllabuses of the highest quality, valid and reliable examinations and certificates of international repute for students of all ages, abilities and interests,” she added.
Stevens said CXC has recently made changes to the administration of the school-based assessment and teachers were trained in key subject areas to receive a clear understanding of the requirements.
CXC’s method of assessment combines school based assessment administered by classroom teachers with traditional examinations. The SBA score contributes to the candidate’s overall examination grade.
