Dominica is being represented by a small contingent at the 13th Caribbean Cuboree now taking place in Suriname
Dominica’s representative, Mallet Marie, a Cub Scout from the 4th Dominica St. Alphonsus Scout Troop, accompanied by Senior Assistant Scout Leader Dr. Mallet Marie, departed on July 18th 2013 to attend this event which runs from July 21st to 28th.
Dr. Marie explained that a Cuboree is usually held once every four years and is a gathering of cub scouts from various countries in one place (camp).
In general, the purpose of a Cuboree is to provide an opportunity for boys, as well as girls between the ages of 7 and 11 years to interact, experience different cultures and foster lasting friendships, he said.
Dominica hosted the 5th Caribbean Cuboree in 1988.
Hundreds of cubs from throughout the Caribbean region are attending the 13th Cuboree, which is being held under the theme “Fun in the Jungle”.
Participants are camped in the jungle of Suriname, and are expected to have fun! For cubs its means happiness and friendship, for leaders it is an opportunity to influence the growth in relationships and scouting spirit, according to Dr. Mallet.
In essence, scouting gives children more confidence and responsibility and the opportunity to meet new people. It helps develop social skills, builds teamwork and leadership ability, encourages self-sufficiency, builds good relationships and fosters long-lasting friendships.
With this in mind, nine year old Mallet Marie, who has been a member of the International Scouting Community since the age of five when he joined as a Beaver Scout (while living in Barbados), said he is excited to have the opportunity to attend this Cuboree.
In particular, he hopes to interact with other Cubs from the Region.
As some readers may recall, Mallet recently represented the Pioneer Preparatory School in the DBS National Reading Competition, where he placed second.
Accordingly, he was recognized for this achievement by his Scout Troop (4th Dominica St. Alphonsus) at their 59th Anniversary celebration last Sunday.
Well, were there 2 Doctors? The article mentions a “Dr. Marie” (paragraph 3) and a “Dr. Mallet” (paragraph 7). Just a bit confusing.

Congrats Mallet (Jr). You’re making your family very proud. Hope you and your dad have fun. It is events like these I wish we could concentrate on hosting here in Dominica. I attended the one in Dominica in 1988 and Scouting definitely molded me into a decent man.
