Dominica’s Stephanie Astaphan is the latest recipient of the ECCB’s the 2010 Thomas De La Rue Currency Scholarship, and will be pursuing a degree in International Economics and International Law at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica.
The St. Kitts based Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), in collaboration with the Thomas De La Rue Group PLC announced the £9,300 per annum presentation recently.
Astaphan is already an accomplished academic holding a Bachelor’s Degree in International Politics and Economics from USA’s Middlebury College, in Vermont.
She also holds high honours for her research on dependency relations within the Caribbean and is renowned for her keen interest in development economics, particularly in the formulation of sustainable public policy tailored to the Caribbean circumstances.
De La Rue Group PLC is the authorised printer of the EC dollar. The scholarship is awarded every two years to a citizen of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union to pursue post-graduate studies in Economics at any campus of the University of the West Indies.
Eligible applicants must have at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree and be committed to working in the Caribbean after completion of postgraduate studies.
This is an admirable accomplishment. Congratulations!!!
However, it saddens me to see that most scholarship are given to the wealthy in Dominica. There are so many bright students on the island who will never get to shine because they do not have the monetary resources. Here in America, I act as the liasion to the scholarship committee and most recipients are choosen, not only on thier academic performance but also thier level of financial hardship. One day, I am going to create a scholarship program for student in Dominica and follow the same criteria. I have already spoken to the my organizations’ scholarship chairman to help me in working out the logistics. This is one of the things I would love to pursue and a way to give back to my country.
This is not to condemn the recipient of this scholarship.. I am very proud that a fellow Dominican has been bestowed this wonderful opportunity. I am just say… I see a pattern with when it comes to selecting winners. Just saying…
Stephanie, Power to you WOMAN, I wish you all the very best in your every endeavor. Jah Bless!!!
