Congrats to Amy but although the degree is Doctor of Laws no one is called “Doctor” with a JD degree. A JD is essentially equivalent to an LLB. To be called doctor she needs to pursue a PhD in law.

Congratulations young lady. You have done well and as a result have done your yourself, family and nation proud. Keep working hard and all the best in the future. DNO a graduate from law school here in the US receives a JD, but are not refered to as doctor. Chris Cuomo on CNN has a JD, his brother the governor of NY has a JD. He not called Dr. Andrew Coumo. If a title is to be attached to them it’s, Esquire. Thank you. Once again well done young lady.

Well said!!! While I am proud of the young lady’s success, you are right. Here in the USA, a JD degree is called a Jurist Doctorate, hence, the holder is not a doctor of law… I have an LLB (Hons) degree which I attained last October. This is equivalent to a JD, yet I cannot and do not consider myself a “Juris Doctor”…
Thus, news needs to be reported accurately… in order not to confuse the readers, there of…

So you are quite right and I’m agreeing with you.
Once again congrats to the young lady…and her family for achieving this honorary degree! This degree is only attained through hard work and much, much dedication!!!!

It is only called Juris Doctor in the United States of America and some other countries like Australia, but it is the same as an LLB in the commonwealth. It is not a PhD.

If you are asking LLB is at the undergraduate level (Bachelor’s) and JD is at the graduate level(Doctor)

Congratulations young lady. Your efforts have made you, your family and country proud. I wish you every success in your career and hope that you continue doing great things. It is not to deminish the young lady’s accomplishments, it is to ensure that we properly educate readers of this medium. In the US those who have obtain a juris doctors are not usually refered to as doctor. Chris Coumo of CNN has a JD and so does his brother, governor Andrew Coumo. They are not given the title doctor. The preferred term to avoid confusion with one who has and MD or pHd, Esquire. However, the rules vary from state to state. Once again congratulations young lady you have done well.

I really do not see the need for an argument here. A JD is a professional degree that allows one to practice law in the US. An LLB does the same in jurisdictions that allow it.
One does an undergrad degree before being allowed into law school the same as with medical doctors.. However, JDs don’t refer to themselves as doctor, while medical doctors do.

The young lady worked hard for her degree. I applaud her for her hard work and dedication. With that kind of dedication and discipline, I am sure she will be very successful in her future endeavors.

No that’s not accurate. The JD is the equivallent to an LLB. The difference is that in the US you are required to have previously attained an Undergraduate degree before attaining the JD where as in our Jurisdictions you may enroll in an LLB degree straight from college with your A-levels or an Associate degree. A JD is not equivalent to an LLM (Graduate level degree in law) in Commonwealth Jurisdictions.

Congratulations to you all on the excellent work of one who is clearly a very intelligent young lady. However, it’s Amy Morancie Esq. DNO please find out from Mr Gabriel Christian. I believe he has a JD. Chris Cuomo the CNN has one and so does his brother Gov. Andrew Cuomo. None of these men are called Dr. Not usual practice here in the US. Once again congratulations and all the best.

While the young lady should be lauded, please Verna, don’t trick the public with your unvarnished ignorance. The JD is the equivalent of the LLB. Remember when the US gained independence from the UK they wanted to change everything like drive on the right instead of the left, so they changed the LLB to JD. JD is not a graduate degree in law – that is the LLM. The post graduate degree is still the Doctorate degree.

You’re both right. Either way, it’s a significant undertaking!

I applaud the young lady’s achievements, but a Juris Doctor qualification is not the same as a PhD, it is equivalent to a masters degree- an LLB in the UK and the Caribbean. The title of Dr is generally reserved for Medical Doctors and PhDs. It is grand enough that she is successfully pursuing a legal career, no need to inflate her qualifications!

No, it’s not. It’s a doctorate, one of several Dr. of law degrees.
