OH MONROE. They are good. I studied with UWI, thanks but I do not recommend them to anyone, very student unfriendly except to force you to pay up on fees they keep raising monthly. My daughter is at Monroe and I am waiting for the graduation next year, we are on top. Three times on the President’s. We are doing it big. And yes is all night hard work and no support from mayor or government. We like to be independent so that no man jack can bully us into what we do not want. And Sir Max Andrew, thank you because some people did not believe me on this on.

    Max Andrew says:

The discussion isn’t about which university is better…its about the students who worked hard and achieved success. Let’s congratulate them. The only downside to this is that the males are falling behind. A trend confirmed for over 2 decades now. On another note, the current trend is to engage more and more people into the education process. And hence the reason why all universities, both big and small all over the world are offering distance education via online means..It’s cheaper and reaches more students. UWI attempted a few years ago to establish a campus in the Atlanta area because of the large number of Caribbean nationals who resides there. But it didn’t meet with success for the simply reason that it didn’t meet the accreditation requirement of the State of Georgia. A lot (the majority of our tertiary institutions in the region, inc. UWI are not accredited by anyone or any agency. UWI was established by UK Royal Charter in 1962 and before that it operated as an overseas college of the University of London (UOL) just as the East ad west African universities which were formally overseas colleges of the UOL. It’s only now we are mandated by CARICOM to establish Accreditation Agencies or Boards or Coucils so as to create a Regional Accreditation body to accredit our regional and national tertiary institutions. So the answer is that UWI is NOT accredited even thought its a centre of excellence and widely accepted all over. Lastly, accreditation is a voluntary process. And that there is a difference between Accredited and Recognised. When u are accredited, it means an external body inspects you against measurable and acceptable standards of excellence and then determines that you have met those standards and you are given accreditation for a given period of time. This process is an ongoing one. One can have it and then lose it. One can work hard and obtain it.

Good Luck and god’s blessing to all our graduates from Monroe, China, USA, UWI, Cuba and wherever else .

Well said Max Andrew. I find that Caribbean people want all institutions to fit ONE mould. They tyranny of sameness. Any new institution that attempts to distinguish itself -like Monroe College – is immediately branded as inadequate. The best approach is to look at every institution by itself…what makes it the special place it is.

For a paper to be truly accepted as valid it has to be validated among peers both internal and external. Please tell me apart from the shitty internal journal how many UWI graduates get accepted to international bodies and conferences. I rest my case . UWI is crap.

Well congratulations to all, but I am hoping that the Dominica State College can begin offering recognised BSc and MBA degrees within the next two to four years.

I think the State and the families of these kids could have saved some serious monies and these kids could have had a part-time jobs in Dominica giving them an advantage in acquiring real working experience.

Another point we should bear in mind – the amounts spent by Government of Dominica to assist kids with economic costs to colleges such as this one could have well been spent on paying better salaries to the DSC and attracting better qualified lecturers as well.

This suggestion may be unpopular, but government should freeze these scholarships to these overseas colleges for another three years to lay the foundation in order to recruit excellent faculty for our own state college to make our tertiary institutions more competitive and enabling many more of our citizens the opportunity to access higher education at an affordable price as well as allowing the banks and credit unions to offer special education loans. That can also have business places contributing to the college and receiving a tax break.

To my mind this will be a better utilisation of funds with greater positive outcomes for our Nation.

Your point is very valid and should be taken into consideration, However it is not applicable to these students mentioned above. The scholarships that SOME of us attained were given by the institution itself and not from the governement of Dominica. Others were either assisted by family members or took some sort of loan.

That is simply not true UWI degrees are recognised all over the world in England and the US even more so than Monroe college. Monroe college is a private college that is not even highly regarded in the US. Please !!!!!!!!! Dont get me started. You do well at UWI and you shine anywhere in the world. Monroe, University of Phoenix – these colleges are private institutions that put a high price on a degree and advertise they are not highly regarded. One would be better off going to a public CUNY college. Do your research people.

You sorry fool! UWI is teh caribbeans’ biggest white elephant. Their graduate are silo thinkers and cannot measure up to the well rounded graduates. the UWI Degree is NOT recognized in the US and Canada. Even in the UK the request leveling courses. You complete a UWI masters and yo u need to do an extra year before you can be admitted in the PHD programme. I know I have been through the system. They just need to shut down UWI. UWI is not progressive. Even the online programme is really a distance programme and not an ONline one ..

Please prove where UWI is accepted in the US and Canada. I have been through both systems and I can tell you for a fact that is not the case with UWI. My cousin graduated with a degree in pharmacology at UWI and when he migrated to Canada. Even thought he was practicing for years in the Caribbean he had to go to school for two years to even practice there. You do the research and stop spreading lies. UWI is crap.

Congratulations to all on thier achievements

On another note do we need to trash UWI to promote another school? UWI is archaic and should really get with the times, but MONROE with all due respect in speaking of colleges is not part of the conversation either. Payless and Nine West both make shoes, however they are not on par, and then Nine West is no Vince Camuto or Christian Louboutin.

These days you don’t even have to live your room to get a first class degree from a top tier university they are all online.

  24. October 17, 2012

    Congrats Ladies. Well done.
Stop dissing UWI everybody, it’s the frame of mind of the people who go to these universities. UWI teaches persons to be critical thinkers, though. This is not the topic at hand anyhow. I am proud of the Dominican ladies.

Congratulations to these women. I concur Dominica have the most beautiful and intelligent women on the planet. I am not joking.

Anyway according to an Observation made by the Great Derek “hunter” St.Rose while our women are succeding the young men are joking Karl. All i see are ladies where are all the young men gone. Not taking anything away from the ladies, but it is an alarming trend when out of all the names mentioned i do not see one guy in there. Where are the roll models in Dominica. I think every man in DA should aske themselves a question.

Again: Well done ladies teach the guys a lesson.

Congrats ladies. Wonder if they will be employed in Dominica? On another note, 389 students graduated from Dominica State College… where are they going? It’s good to be graduating, but another thing to actually find a job, esp in your country.
I know government can’t do everything, but these people need jobs… and the best thing to know is that the government is doing everything possible to foster an environment for investment and growth in order to attract businesses to and grow industries in Dominica — so that these young folks can put their education to good use. So both the ruling gov’t and opposition need to come together for the good of the country and get the country rolling. St. Lucia is far ahead of us, and we can’t sit and wait for handouts anymore! Let’s move Dominica forward!

    • xang
      October 19, 2012

How are you to support this notion that st. Lucia is far ahead of us. Where can i find the research made by you or someone else that states and supports you claims. In the times of evidence based practice – practice stating facts and figures… St. Lucia has universities… what percentage is made up of lucians? What you are not seeing is that we Dominicans dont come back home when we go out to study… but Lucians far ahead of us… my hypothesis…not so.

This is not a true statement. I am a student of uwi, and uwi offers a lot of thory education. Their lectures are not studnt friendly and this is why their pass mark is 45%

Uwi needs to offer more practical learning and hands on because when u graduAte as uwi student u should most likly have an office job because u will go on a work sit and be lost at most unless u forget about ur big degree and start working from scratch n getting experience. The agriculture students has yet to se a field at my campus…

UWI is not better…when u go to america with that they tell you its not considered a degree and when you go to the Uk they tell you is a half degree you have…UWI just taking people money for crappy service….no one on one attention…if you don’t show up they don’t care…thats why i love me some monroe.

      • Anonymous
        October 18, 2012

WHile I agree that UWI’s method of education is not practical enough, it is not true that UWI degrees are not regarded. In fact they are highly regarded. My secretarial diploma from UWI in addition to Sixth form college (Secretarial) saved me two semesters in a USA university. We need to stop being so ignorant. And not wanting to diss any particular university but when choosing universities in the US, you have to look at their acreditation, how many published professors they have, tenured professors and all those things. How many of their freshmen go all the way through. All these things make a difference.

Also, one the reasons some of them offer scholarships and low tuition (in-state) to caribbean and other foreign nationals is to attract students because the schools are not highly accredited.

this is an absolute lie and you need to stop. I went to school in the US and all of us from the Caribbean that were doing the MBA were UWI first degree graduates. do you think we would have had the credits to enter the MBA program if not recognised??

So true they really think that UWI is the only way to go! Lmao thank God for all the other online universities that are even more compatible than UWI. They were always bringing down the online universities now UWI have majority of it courses online. Chupes some low minded people who think UWI is it!

But what people see behind UWI? UWI is not even mentioned in the report. Are you jealous of UWI grads? Just apply there, you might get through. You could be a a UWI grad too.

I started my first degree at St. Augustine and quickly released that this was a waste of time. NONE of my credits transferred when I went to the US. They will take the degree as entry requirement but you WILL not transfer credits nor will your status be on Par with someone who should be on the same level as you. This is not hear say this is living fact having started in UWI and done a degree and masters in the US.ok bud man

UWI courses are not even online. Yous till have to go to the dirty run down open campus to watch videos. It is a distance programme not an online programme.

If it was ot highly accredited why did you leave UWI and go to the US?? US schools are designed for you to be open minded, progressive and do well if you apply yourself unlike UWI that is still draconian and stuck in the era of the 70’s talking prestige with no substance.Have you ever been to the nasty run down St. Augustine campus. How many of the UWI graduates are published in international journals or professional circuits. Chew on that.
